Scott stood leaning up against the main table in the room as the Professor sat in his wheel chair in front of him.
Jean Grey stood at the Professor's side, and all heads turned as Kurt teleported in only moments before Jamie came walking through the door.

"Good", Xavier smiled, "you're all here. Now to get down to business. Scott?"

Cyclops turned around and pressed a button on the main table. A large holographic image appeared floating above the table, shaped into lithe body of Mystique.

"I've done some investigating through the night, and I've discovered more intel on this new Brotherhood. Mystique has been running the group ever since Magneto disappeared at the end of the uprising attempt. And, like us, she is going out and recruiting impressionable mutants."

"I found out that she already took one of the mutants I was sending you all to try and convince to join us, one Fredrick J. Dukes."

"Mystique is building herself a small army"
, the Professor said with a look of concern.
"And whatever she has planned cannot bold well for us."

For a moment Hank sincerely regrets programming Vision with the entire database of U.N. Guidelines and International Laws. "We're the Avengers, Vision." Hank smiled. "I think we'll get away with bending a few rules to prevent World War III."

Had he really just said that? Hank almost vomited in his mouth, disgusted with himself. But this was an extraordinary circumstance. This was the only way. He was sure of it.

"Alright, the Flash is busy back in the States, but he'll be here soon. Everyone be ready to go if Thor calls us in." Hank nodded.

Green Lantern checked the charge on his ring for the fourth time since they landed. Wonder Woman fastened her bracelets. Janet Pym, the Wasp, practiced with her Stings, shooting a few well aimed ones out the window. Hawkeye silently placed steel tipped arrows into his quiver. The Vision stood motionless, staring off into the distance with an expressionless face and cold eyes.

And so did Hank.

This was going to get a lot worse before it got better.

Khandaq

When the citizens of Khandaq looked up at the sky on this bright, sunny morning, they saw a formidable figure flying through the sky. Not that this was an unheard of sight - their beloved ruler, Black Adam, was known to survey his kingdom in this very manner. But this flying figure was not Black Adam.

Thor hovered high above Khandaq, and waited. He knew it was only a matter of time. And he knew that, if Adam was anything like he believed him to be in his personal experience of him, he would answer this silent challenge directly.

"Thor."

Thor turned around to see Black Adam flying towards him, anger etched in his features.

"Adam."

"Why have you come here? You are trespassing on my land!"

If Thor was not careful, this could come to blows very quickly.

"We ventured through Hel and Jotunheim together, Adam. Is it too much to ask that I be granted an audience here in your homeland?"

Adam hesitated, eying Thor suspiciously.

"What do you want?"

"To talk. To understand what has happened, to hear your side of the story. That is all."

There was an extended period of silence, as Black Adam considered this. Finally, he gave a grudging nod.

"Very well. Come with me."

Washington DC.

And in the name of thy Father, my Father, whom I so believe and love, deliver me from myself, for I giveth thee up to thyself, and not regret the consequences. Save me now, for I don’t have much time, save me now Father, before I perish before my very eyes.

She lifted her head up to the hanging feet of the Son, kissing it lightly before fully lifting her head. She gazed upon his visage, hannging before her. She lifted her self up, and placed a kiss on his hard cheek, for she was tall enough to do so. If a clergy member had seen her she’s been banished on the second, but she was alone. But even in her lonliness, He was there. She placed another kiss on his cheek, and bowed one last time before gathering herself up and walking back towards the exit.

Neena Thurman stepped out of the church grounds, her hood still covering her head, but not her face. She slipped the red cloak off, and revealed a woman with six guns attached to three holsters, and four knives placed in four pockets. She threw the cloak on the ground, and walked with her head high and her breath even.

She took two guns, and cocked them ready as she slipped behind a building wall and climbed up the fire ladders. The Senator and his men would be here any minute, and she planned on being prepared for the hit.

Neena Thurman was no more till the church bells rang early next morning. For now she was Domino, the Queen of the Kill, the assassin of the hour, the most feared female mercenary on the planet.

She held her breath as the motorcade approached down the long dark road.

"Who yer killin' this time Dom?"

Neena spun towards the voice, weapons raised and ready. As she recognised the face under the low slung hat she lowered her weapons and turned her attantion back to the motorcade. "Some strung out kiddie fiddlin' politician. I'd have happily taken the job for free, but they insisted on paying. What do you want Logan?"

Logan smiled a little. It was always business with her. He crouched down next to her and butted out his cigar. "I'm putting together a team. I want you to be a part of it".

Perspectives ~ Part 8

The Devil Hulk tore through the hotel like a tornado, tossing bits and pieces of the building clear across town.
The area had been evacuated, but the death toll was already in the hundreds.

News networks reported on the crisis in the City of Angels, many wondering where their protectors were. The Avengers, the Justice League...all seemingly absent while one of America's greatest cities was turned into a war zone.

The Devil Hulk howled as it leaped up high into the air, and came crashing down on top of a large skyscraper. The building burst outward like it was hit by a massive bomb, as the monster crashed on through the floors.

The massive office building collapsed on top of the beast, but the Devil Hulk burst from the smoking rubble and back onto the streets. Grabbing an nearby vehicle, the Devil Hulk hurled it into a nearby pizza shop.

The creature roared, a primal bellow of pure hateful rage. It was like a tyrannosaurus marking it's kill. But this monster was far from done. All the Devil Hulk felt was hatred. Utter and complete hate for anything and everything it saw. It would not stop until everything on the planet was annihilated.

With a great leap, the Devil Hulk shot off into the air towards downtown Los Angelas.

THE ODYSSEY
Chapter 4 ~ Revelations - Act 3

Galactus looked down on the Super-Skrull, his gaze making K'lrt feel uncomfortable. It was like the Devourer was looking into his very soul.

"You are sincere in your request", Galactus finally stated.

"I am", the Super-Skrull nodded.
"I offer myself to your services, great Galactus, in exchange for sparing my homeworld."

"An intriguing offer. And one I have heard before", the Devourer's narrow gaze shifted to the Silver Surfer.

"Very well", Galactus boomed as he reached down and picked up the Super-Skrull into his hands.
"You will serve me as my Herald."

He enclosed the Super-Skrull in his hands, and white light began to seep out from between his closed fingers.

"You task will be to seek out worlds ripe with the energy I require to sustain my existence."

The light escaping grew brighter and brighter.

"From this day forward, you now serve Galactus!"

The light seemed to explode outward, causing all watching save Hal Jordan and Norrin Radd to turn away.
And the light disappeared as Galactus slowly opened his hands to reveal a cosmic powered Super-Skrull standing in his palm.

Super-SkrullHerald.jpg

"Now, my Herald", the Devourer boomed.
"I have little time to waste. The Hunger gnaws at me, and I require sustenance. Go...find me a world on which to feed."

The Super-Skrull smirked as he looked down at his clenched fist. The power he felt was exhilarating. With a glance down towards the Lanterns and the two former Heralds, K'lrt rocketed off into the Black in search of a world ripe for destruction.

"Parallax", Galactus looked down on the former Green Lantern with a scowl, "I release you from my service."

"Thank you, Galactus", Hal replied.

"Now that that's over, we just have to figure out a way to stop Tyrant", Daredevil spoke up.

"Don't worry", Hal said as he rose into the air, "we'll figure something out."

As Hal and the Lanterns left Galactus' ship, the Devourer called out.

"Silver Surfer."

Norrin Radd turned around, flying to hover in front of his former master.

"Tyrant is a being of incredible power", the Devourer stated.
"You will not be able to stop him with your power alone."

"Then help us", Norrin said.
"He is your creation, your spawn. You have a stake in this matter too!"

Galactus looked away, almost reluctantly.

"I cannot. It has been some time since I last fed. If I do not consume the energies I require soon, I fear I may slip towards death."

"But"
, Galactus continued as he turned to look back at his Herald.
"I will not send you to this struggle unprepared. There is a place, Silver Surfer, a place of infinite power. Where the raw energies of universe boil and roll like an infinite sea. It is called the Cosmic Crunch. And it's power is enough to destroy Tyrant on contact."

"The Crunch", the Surfer nodded in recollection.
"Yes...I have heard of such a place. But only in stories."

"It is real, Silver Surfer"
, Galactus stated.
"Have no doubts of that."

The Devourer's eyes flared and Norrin's jaw dropped as images flooded his mind.

"I have imprinted the location of the Crunch into your mind, and how you may properly utilize it's power to destroy Tyrant."

"I...I see...", Norrin uttered, still a bit shaken from the rush of information.
"Getting him to come there will be the challenge."

"Yes", Galactus stated matter-of-factly.
"Fortunately, I have an idea that may work to lure the Tyrant to you..."

I put my plate down and wipe my hands clean. "So, that's it? They made an offer? What kind of offer could get you to work for the government?" Wally gives me an unsure look.

"I'm sorry, Wally. I don't want to sound like I'm interrogating you. I'm really just curious. And a little concerned. You're a government agent now. What do you do if Luthor sends you on a mission you don't agree with? Are you willing to put aside what you believe in to carry out his policies?"

I look at Jay and lean forward, dithering about his question awkwardly.

"Well, I dunno, I didn't really- is this bothering you that much? Come on, I know it's Luthor, but you can trust me, Right?"

I'm halfway to New York when I hear a monstorous roar towards the west. I recognize that roar.

It belongs to the Incredible Hulk.

I can feel my body break the sound barrier a few times over as I fly towards LA.

I see the green behemoth leaping through the air. Only, it's not the Hulk. It can't be. Atleast the Hulk looks kind of like a human.

Like a silent bullet, I crash into the monster at unimaginable speeds.

The force of the crash sends us into the middle of LA's interstate, I take the opportunity while the monster is down to clear everyone out of their cars at superspeed.

"I don't know what you are." I say as I hover above the monster.

Superman_v2_205_Pyra.jpg

"But you really need to settle down."

The Devil Hulk breathed heavily as he stared at the Man of Steel scornfully. The beast utters a low growl as he comes at Superman, wrapping it's massive hand around Superman's face and palming it like a baseball.

The monster slammed Superman into the pavement, creating a large crater and sending shock waves through the ground that shakes the foundations of the freeways.

With a careless toss, the Devil Hulk hurled Superman away, sending him smashing through a large overpass.

"So Wade. You still got that healing factor?" Deadshot asked rhetorically as three bullets shot from the gun and tore through the Merc's left leg.

Healing factor?

Figures.

"Now, now play nice you two," I say as I web up the second merc's wrist mounted guns. While he's distracted trying to get it off, I deliver a spinning roundhouse kick to his face, sending him sprawling.

I sense Deadpool getting up behind me, and I sling two weblines behind me, and pull hard. Deadpool's body flies over my head, and crashes with a sickening thud into the other merc.

I need to end this fairly quickly. The other merc has barely missed me multiple times, and Deadpool's healing factor will allow him to outlast even my superhuman stamina.

"Now, boys, is this fighting really necessary? Can't all us costumed weirdos get along?"

I crash into the cars and concrete with a force that almost destroys the entire freeway.

I'm back on the monster in a blue and red blur, driving my fist into his skin and sending the beast flying through the air.

The farther away he is from people, the better.

The Devil Hulk tumbles through the air, and comes crashing down towards the Earth. The impact shatters the windows in the nearby buildings, and even topples an apartment building unfortunate enough to be close to the massive crater that was once a basketball court.

Superman flies in towards the hole when the Devil Hulk leaps out of dust cloud and wraps it's vice-like grip around him. Plummeting back to the ground, the Devil Hulk pushed Superman in front, slamming him into a parked SUV, causing the vehicle to explode.

Standing amid the flames unscathed was the Devil Hulk. The beast hand one hand pinning the Man of Steel down, while the other help the burning motor of the vehicle that he repeatedly smashed into Superman's face.

I look at Jay and lean forward, dithering about his question awkwardly.

"Well, I dunno, I didn't really- is this bothering you that much? Come on, I know it's Luthor, but you can trust me, Right?"

"Of course I can I trust you, Wally. It's Luthor that's the question. There's a reason the JSA broke up all those years ago. The government wanted our identities, putting our families at risk. And they wanted to be able to order us around. It was one thing during the war, but we were civilians, volunteering to put our lives on the line to help people, not serve some government agenda."

I see the expressions on Wally's face. I've given him a lot to think about. "Hey, I don't want you to start doubting yourself. I know you made your choice for a good reason. I was just wondering why."

The monster that I'm pretty sure isn't the Hulk smashes the metal into my face again and again.

I point my face forward and disentergrate the motor with my laser beams.

I hit the monster square in the chest with the eye blasts, knocking him off his feet and on to the ground where my fist laying into his face causes shock waves to ripple through the pavement and air.

"Mystique is building herself a small army", the Professor said with a look of concern.
"And whatever she has planned cannot bold well for us."
"So, it's this Mystique woman?" Jamie said "Cos I'd kinda figured about the Brotherhood recruiting for an army...it's what they usually do isn't it? I'll be running a pool on whether it's Magneto pulling the strings behind it all,"

There was an awkward second of silence while Jamie looked around the room.

"Is that it? Cos I can probably still catch Jubilee with her top off if I leave right now,"

"Luthor may not be the most trustworthy guy in the world, but I think this team's going to work."

"Fair enough," I sigh as I throw away the various pizza boxes in a blur.

"Luthor may not be the most trustworthy guy in the world, but I think this team's going to work."

"Well, maybe that's why I'm unsure about them. I wouldn't mind meeting them, if you could set it up. I haven't spoken with Diana in a long time, and I haven't seen Thor since he, well, died."

I'm starting to hate myself...

Twin batarangs appear from the flames and strike the robot in the chest, but it continues to bathe me in fire. The cape shields me, the suit protects me from the worst of the heat, but I won't be able to breathe soon.

The blissfully cool night air reaches me and I inhale gratefully. I watch as Robin tackles the robot, the two henchmen on the ground, down for the count. I stand to help Robin, but he waves me off.

I nod in agreement. I said he could be in charge tonight, so it's his call. I put the full force of my weight into the kick and the door bursts open.

"It's the Bat!!!" Gunfire erupts and people scream as the smoke-filled doorway is chewed apart by the bullets.

"Did we get him? Did we hit him?"

"No." The gunmen shouts as I lift him to the ceiling, smashing my head head into his nose, and dropping his limp body onto his partner. The other one tries to push the dead weight his partner off, but has no luck. I land on the floor and step on his wrist, forcing him to drop his rifle.

"Where's Mysterio?" I growl. The terror in his eyes is satisfying. He tries to mutter an answer.

"I'm here, Batman. Prepare to meet your demise!!!" In a purple puff of smoke, Mysterio appears between me and the hostages from seeming nothingness. He holds some kind of weapon, aiming it right at my chest.

"Nice trick."

"It is no trick...it is mag-!"

I kick the gun free and punch him in the face, shattering the globe. He drops like a rock.

"Sure it is."

I look at the hostages. They actually seem more scared of me than they were of Mysterio and his men. Sometimes being a symbol of fear has its downside. I point at the entrance. "Go. Now!"

There's screams and shouts as they run for their freedom. I can see the red and blue lights of police cars out the front of the bank, can hear the sounds of the officers as they order the civilians to the ground.

By the time they enter the bank, guns drawn, all they see is Mysterio and his men tied together.

I punch the robot with a precise blow, before performing a roundhouse kick, hitting it smack in the chest and knocking it backwards and into the wall. With a flick of my wrist I fling out an explosive batarang, which moves in an arc through the arc and slices into the exoskeleton of the robot before exploding, the remains collapsing to the ground. I listen to the incoming sirens and swing around, firing my grapple to the nearest roof and pull myself up into the night sky, away from the burning building. I land perfectly on the roof and turn back to the group of goons being arrested, smiling.

"Well that went well."

"Well, maybe that's why I'm unsure about them. I wouldn't mind meeting them, if you could set it up. I haven't spoken with Diana in a long time, and I haven't seen Thor since he, well, died."

I'm starting to hate myself...

"It's not really..." I start before looking up at Jay suspisciously.

"This is the League, isn't it?"

"James", the Professor called as he shot Madrox a stern look.

"He does have a point though, Professor", Scott chimed in.
"What if Magneto is behind this? What if he's trying to build up a force to start his war again?"

"Then it is our best interest to see that that never happens."

"So what's our move?"

"Don't concern yourself with the Brotherhood yet. First we must find out exactly what it is they are planning. I have a plan underway to plant a spy in their group. It should provide us with some useful information on their dealings."

"A spy, who is it?"

"That is not for you to know right now", the Professor said.
"I'm sorry if I sound rude, but it is best that, should you meet the Brotherhood again, you do not know who it is. We cannot risk them being discovered."

"So what do you want us to do then", Scott said with a bit of frustration.

"Complete your original mission", Xavier stated.
"Continue to recruit the next class of mutants for the Institute. I will keep you all up to date with the findings of the spy."

"All right, Professor"
, Scott sighed.

"All right, team...let's get to it."

Superman's fist smashes into the Devil Hulk's face again and again. The beast staggers backwards, falling through the front of an empty diner.

Superman came at it again, but the monster snarled as it caught the Man of Steel's fist in it's hand and squeezed. Superman winced as the Devil Hulk crushed his fist in his scaly claw.
The monster leaned forward then, sinking it's massive fangs into Superman's shoulder.

Kara would have dearly liked to say that she heard the epic fight between her cousin and what reporters seemed to know as the Hulk in LA, from Mrs. McGoran's history class. But she didn't. She did hear the breaking news from the television shop on Smallville highstreet, which was, she felt, quite far enough when you're just getting used to super hearing. Either way, ducking out of class wasn't a problem, especially when she had her costume discretely hidden in her locker.

A Few Significant Minutes Later, LA

"Get your teeth off of my cousin!" Kara shouted as she rocketed through the skies over LA.

She landed slightly awkwardly, creating two foot prints in the road, but still managed to use her momentum to punch the Hulk in the jaw. When that had little to no effect, she resorted to hanging on his back and pulling him off by wrapping her arms around his neck.

"How's that for timely arrival?" she shouted over the top of Hulk's roars of frustration.

The Devil Hulk growled loudly as it reached behind and grabbed Supergirl, it's clawed fingers digging into her back. With one powerful tug, the Devil Hulk yanked the Kryptonian off of his back.

As Superman began to rise to his feet, the monster used Kara as a baseball bat, smashing her into the Man of Steel. Superman went sailing out into the street and into the building on the other side.

The Devil Hulk tossed Kara away like a rag doll, sending her sailing through the roof of the diner.

Baring his ivory maw, the Devil Hulk burst through the diner and back out onto the street, going after the Man of Steel...

"Kara!" I yell at my cousin as I fly into the air to avoid the monster's attack.

"Get out of here. Whatever that is, it's too dangerous. I'm going to need help, but from somebody a bit more...seasoned."

Shifting through my tattered costume, I hit a small button on my belt. The button sends out a signal to all the members of the Justice League.

It may take a bit for the rest of the group to home in on my signal, so I need to delay as long as possible.

The beast roars at me and tosses a truck in my direction. I cup my hands around my mouth and blow, a stream of artic wind freezes the truck in mid-air and sends it back tumbling to the ground.

I turn my breath on the monster, freezing his body to negative temperatures.

In just a few short hours we're back in New York. I'm back in my plain clothes, my uniform in the gym bag slung over my shoulder.

"Thanks for the ride back, Tony. I think I'm going to head home for awhile. I need to do some....what is it they call it now days? 'Reflecting'?. Yeah, I need to do some of that."

After dropping off Steve, I headed to my penthouse suite in Stark Towers New York and took a long, relaxing shower. Nice to wash the Nazi off me. When I'm done, I emerge from the bathroom and stride into the plushly-furnished lounge area, naked as the day I was born. For what's the point in being a billionaire if one can't wander around one's luxurious abode in the buff as often as one's schedule allows?

"TV. News."

At the command of my voice, the TV switches on, automatically turning to a news channel that isn't Fox News. And that's when I see it. Live footage of Superman and Supergirl getting their asses handed to them by The Hulk. Or rather, something like The Hulk, but this thing looks bigger, wilder, more savage. I don't know what it is, but whatever it is, it looks like Superman's going to need more help to stop it...

And right on cue, there goes the signal on my League comminicator. It's going to take the League united to eliminate a threat this big. I rush into the elevator. Then rush back out to pull on some underwear. Then rush back into the elevator that will take me directly down to my basement armory.

Once in the armory, I get suited up in my Iron Man armor. But just as I prepare to head out into battle, I falter. This Hulk....thing is throwing Superman around like a ragdoll. Iron Man alone might not have the strength to hurt it, or the endurance to withstand an assault from it. I need something more. Something bigger.

I march through my armory, a collection of older armors and prototypes in various stages of development. One towers above all the others, one that I've been working on in case the need ever arose to battle The Hulk again. It's not quite finished yet, there's still some bugs need fixing, it needs to be tested. I look up at it, thinking. I make my decision.

hulkbuster.jpg

"Initiate Hulkbuster."

There is a series of creaks, followed by the whir of energy, as the Hulkbuster starts up. Under my helmet, I smile. No better test than a road test.

...

"Hey Superman, you look like you could use some help."

When Superman turns around, he's greeted by the sight of me in my Hulkbuster armor, with Captain America perched on my massive shoulder. I picked him up on the way here.

"Lucky for you you've got friends in high places."

"Tony. Cap. Thanks of the support." I say as I eye the massive robot Tony is encased in.

"Brought out the big guns I see?"

***************
I leap off Tony's shoulder and land on the ground next to Supergirl.

"Are you okay, young lady?" I ask with a soft smile as I look at the girl.

"You might want to hang back and let us take care of this."

Almost on cue, Hulk roars and breaks out of his icy prison.

"I think it's time to put your fancy new armor to work, Mr. Stark."
