Speculation:
Has Organic Doom Been Retconned?

Thanks to F4movies.com's (and resident Hype Member) "Mattc" we've finally got our hands on some new photos from a forthcoming issue of Empire Magazine. I wanted to focus in particular one scan he provided, as shown above.

WTF people.

If you recall, Doctor Doom--portrayed as a cosmically-altered "organic metal" being in the first Fantastic Four film--was flash frozen in the film's 3rd act. This took place AFTER Johnny scorched him in a "Supernova" sequence. Now prior to this event, the vast majority of Victor's body had already converted to an organic metal alloy, right down to his finger tips. The supernova heat burned away any remaining vestige of clothing and flesh, leaving the man stark naked and smoking--his Latverian metal mask now plastered to his face...and liquid flesh dripping from behind it.

And now we have this.

Again. WTF. :wow:

The FF franchise hasn't established that Victor has mystical powers as shown in the comics (he only possessed lame "Marco-Polo electric powuhz" in the first film). And clearly he was shown being shipped back to his home country via a Latverian freighter as a Kentucky-Fried crisp of a man.

So how in the world is a flesh and blood version of Doctor Doom possible in this sequel? The prospects for explanation are thrilling to me. Could it be that FF1's "Doctor Doom" was a Doombot all along? Are we retconning everything we saw in the first film? Or is there some other explanation?

Your thoughts?

It wasn't a Doom Bot- unless you're talking about the very end- when he has the mask on... possible, but for a Doom Bot to have that complex set of emotional range and transformation? Don't see it happening.

Unless he came up with a way to save "face" with all his royal riches.

No offense but "Doombot all along" = ugh. Maybe stealing Surfer's powers somehow made him be able to grow new skin.

To me, FF1's Doctor Doom was easily one of the worst things in the film. His reactions to things seemed so out of character for him...especially his attraction to Susan (reminds me of when the 616 MU "Doom" fell for Storm of the X-Men--which was later retconned to be a defective Doombot).

I think it would be brilliant to find out that the industrialist we saw in the last film was merely a puppet being controlled by a monarch elsewhere.

Interesting theory . . . my guess is you're reading way too much into it.

Assuming for a moment that someone can be "healed" from being a fused mass of organic metal, is it that much more of a stretch that after the healing process they might look normal?

I've always assumed that he would be scarred after the "healing" procedure . . . because that would give him scars that he could blame on Reed Richards and cover with armor . . . but it looks like it may not happen exactly that way.

I don't know about this . . .

. . . I'm afraid it could be a bad omen, but I guess we'll have to see how it plays out.

What "healing" procedure are you referring to? Silver Surfer?

This would be the biggest back pedal in movie history but I LOVE the idea.

Doom deserves way better than to be a Donald Trump wannabe with a skin disorder. And the idea of the REAL Dr.Doom sending a doombot to America to trick, spy, manipulate, and conquer sounds exactly like something Dr.Doom would do.

I would have hoped it involved Boris and a bunch of monks.:woot:

But that's just me . . . I think it is more likely to involve the surfer.

. . . and here's another interesting possibility . . . could the picture we are looking at be a Doombot? I think that might be more likely than the first film Doom being a Doombot. I just don't think they'd throw the whole first film away like that.

I don't know, to me that would sound to artificial like they came up with it on the spot. Plus it would ruin his character developement in the first movie as well as the whole love-triangle backstory (yes I know both sucked but they might as well roll with it).

Wouldn't it!!?!? :eek::up:

Then again, since we fanboys have thought of it...what's the likelihood of the studio coming up with it? :csad:

I just noticed something:

Look at the wall behind Doom. It's all smashed up as if Ben smashed him into it. A "human" Doom couldn't have survived that, so that seems like a good clue that theres more here than meets the eye.

Either this Doom is a Doombot or he has the Surfer's powers is my bet.

If it turns out to be a Doombot, wow..that would be incredible..the best retcon in history of film...but yeah, this puzzles me unlike anything I've ever seen...just how much longer must we wait until we see Doom in his full armored appearance....and by the way, that ring is definitely a Latverian crest because I have seen similiar designs over the years in the comics.

That's a good point. I wonder if they might open it up to him somehow burning his face (only his face) and being forced to wear the mask forever as a result? This could go in a lot of directions.

But I'll be frank with you: I never EVER expected them to show Julian McMahon's face one time in this film. I assumed he'd be masked for its entirety.

Yeah I noticed that too. Definitely Latverian royalty and a nice nod to the source material.

Aw, it wouldn't be the studio though that thought of this...our boy Payne is a fan of the F4 and knows that Doom of course has Doombots so maybe he got them to go along with this and we are going to get a Doom at long last, worthy of the name, Dr. Victor Von Doom...come on Story, Come on Payne, Come on McMahon, and most of all, come on Fox...give us DOOM, a name all heroes and villains fear...

Yeah, I was thinking the ring looked Latverian as well...

So the Victor in the first movie might not have been the real Victor

Yeah. This theory is so desperate it's not even funny. :o

But it would be awesome if it was real!!! :woot:

You think it's desperate? :csad: *cries*

Seriously, I think a move like this would be smart and savvy--and easily the best way to correct what so many fans feel was a glaring mistake. And the studio wouldn't lose face in doing it this way.

I'm afraid the alternative (Silver Surfer's power cosmic "fixing" his face) might be unbelievably cheesy.

I say why not have the FF1 Doom be a doombot... it worked for Austin Powers 2, didn't it? :woot:

Seriously though... a case could be made for that status. Consider that the Doom that made the agreement with Reed in the first scene was the real Doom, while the one he sent up in the shuttle to be the Doombot. You really never see Victor in transition between those points so who's to say who it is/isn't that steps onto the shuttle.

And as far as what he does emotionally/physically from that point on... the comic version of the Doombot is meant to behave exactly like Doom except in the presence of another Doombot or Doom himself.

Crap, I just found a plot hole. The doctor who did a medical examination would've realized Doom was a robot. :csad:

Unless the real Doom came to the US to get a medical exam!!! :wow:

Ok, that's a stretch. :oldrazz:

That's a very good point. Why would Doom program a Doombot to say Marco Polo?

My hope is that they completely re-do all of the Doom-behind-mask diologue for the director's cut. I think that would be a better fix than "The Doombot Hypothesis".

I say the SS has something to do with it......
