LAS CRUCES - One south county man didn't need handcuffs to detain an alleged car burglar - instead, he locked him in the car via remote until deputies arrived.

Enrique Lucero Jr., 38, allegedly got into the unlocked Pontiac Grand Am just before midnight Oct. 2, according to Doña Ana sheriff's Sgt. Joe Reynaud.
Lucero shut the door and allegedly removed the car's radio before the car's owner spotted the dome light on and locked the vehicle remotely from the safety of his house, Reynaud said.

The car's owner then called 911.

Just four minutes later, deputies arrived and found Lucero inside the car, on the 900 block of Livesay Street, in Anthony, N.M., according to the sheriff's office.

In an attempt to escape the vehicle, Lucero allegedly broke the interior door handle off, Reynaud said. It is unclear why the man was unable to unlock the door and free himself, but Reynaud said Lucero - who was convicted in 2007 of aggravated drunken driving and having an open container of alcohol in his car, according to court records - was intoxicated.

"Obviously, door locks don't open when you pull the door handle on that car," Reynaud said.

Lucero gave up to authorities without incident and was booked into the Doña Ana County Detention Center on a charge of auto burglary, according to the jail. He was released Oct. 3 on a $5,000 surety bond.

The car's owner will not face charges for shutting the man inside the vehicle, said Deputy District Attorney James Dickens.

I don't think I like that they felt they had to point that out.

Love this! I always thought it would be great if banks could do something like this with bank robbers. Somehow lock them in between the doors, in that little "air-lock" area.

You never know, they've attempted stuff like that before.

Recently a convenience store owner here got arrested because he did something similar. He was charged. I say it's ********, but what the hell do I know.

The trial was supposed to start last week but there are problems with interpreters (the guy is an immigrant who runs a store). Absolute gong show, the whole thing is such a waste. There are too many people who need to be booked and you go off and nail some guy who was protecting his business.
