Pain and Gain is an upcoming movie directed by Michael Bay and written by Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely, based on an article published in 1998 by the New Miami Times.

The movie is centered in Adrian Doorbal (Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson) and Daniel Lugo (Mark Wahlberg), two bumbling bodybuilders who decide to kidnapp Marc Schiller (Tony Shalhoub), a Miami businessman, in order to use the ransom money to save their gym. The plan goes wrong, and Schiller discovers their identities. In order to silence him, they leave him to die, but Schiller recovers and plans to enact revenge against his captors.

The cast also includes Ed Harris as a detective hired by Schiller to capture Doorbal and Lugo; Rob Corddry as John Mese, a bodybuilder-turned-accountant who runs the gym and ends up being caught up in the duo's scheme; Anthony Mackie as Lugo's sensitive friend who becomes the unwitting third member of the gang; and Bar Paly as Lugo's girlfriend Sabina Petrescu, an illegal immigrant, ex-beauty queen and aspiring actress.

Pain and Gain is Bay's first non-action movie. With a budget of $20 million dollars, the movie will have no action, aside from one car crash, and is being marketed as a "dark comedy" in the same vein as Fargo and Pulp Fiction.

The movie is produced by Bay's Platinum Dunes and will be released in 2013.

Sounds like a funny concept. We shall see if Bay can pull it off. I know Johnson and Wahlberg can do comedy. Especially after seeing Be Cool and The Other Guys.

They sold me on the dark comedy similar to Fargo and Pulp Fiction. This has Quentin Tarantino written all over it.

I'm more or less a Michael Bay fan, so I'll probably go see it.

I'm not a Michael Bay fan, but I love this cast, so I'll go see it.

Just The Rock, a little Armageddon and bits of the last hour of Transformers 3.

A "dark comedy" by Michael Bay? Interesting.

I will watch anything with Bay's name on it.

Yep, same here. I think of all of the directors/producers out there, I own most of his films than any other. Transformers 1 is now my favorite from him, but before that, I loved The Island and Bad Boys 2. I could watch 2 hours of just Mike, Marcus and Captain Howard bickering. And people say Michael Bay can only do action scenes! Pft....:whatever: But when it comes to incorporating action and comedy, I think the guy is a genius. The backyard scene in Transformers still has me in stitches.

Awesome cast and like some of Bay's movies so will watch this when its out.

Anthony Mackie In-Talks for Michael Bay's 'Pain'

The muscled ensemble of Michael Bay's "Pain and Gain" continues to grow, as "The Hurt Locker" star Anthony Mackie is in talks to join Mark Wahlberg and Dwayne Johnson as the third lead in Michael Bay's low-budget Paramount pic.
Paramount had no comment.

Based on a true story first told in an article from the Miami New Times, film follows a group of bodybuilders who engaged in a campaign of kidnapping, extortion and murder in Florida.

Mackie is in negotiations to play Adrian Doorbal, a big-hearted bodybuilder who works out with Wahlberg's character, Daniel Lugo. Doorbal has little to show for his hard work, leading him to get involved with Lugo's scheme.

I can't believe it myself, but I'm actually looking forward to this. Well, it's gonna be interesting to see an action-less movie from Bay himself. And it certainly doesn't hurt that Anthony Mackie will be in it.

The Rock is supposed to be playing Doorbal. Either he dropped out, or Mackie is playing a different character, which is what I originally heard.

It's possible that Variety wrote wrong. From other sites, it's stated that Mackie will play an accomplice of Wahlberg's character, the "third lead" in the movie.

bad boys cost less than this film(inflation aside)

glad to see bay trying something different, hopefully the script is good, they sure as hell had enough time to work on it.

Tony Shalhoub is replacing John Turturro as Marc Schiller, the business that is captured by Doorbal and Lugo.

Bar Paly is also joining the cast as Lugo's girlfriend Sabina Petrescu, an illegal immigrant and ex-beauty queen whom Lugo intents to promote as an actress with the ransom money.

Same here.

Although I only like a few of his films, I hope he succeeds with this one. I want him to show people(as well as myself)that he can do more than mindless action films.

His earlier films were fun, but once he did Transformers, his movies became too overdrawn, too cartoony, and self-indulgent.

^ I disagree. The Transformers trilogy is great fun.

to bad that he didnt use just an actress.

Oh, Bay, predictable as ever. Anyway, Shalhoub is a great addition to the cast. He's superb in Monk.

Michael Bay does and should get a lot of crap for Transformers II: Revenge of the Fallen but honestly, aside from that, I've liked most of his work.
