Hey guys. I figure, for the third movie in the Bourne movie series, let's have an all encompassing thread like we did for Pirates. An easier way to keep things organized.
I'm real excited. I love the first two Bourne movies. What's interesting to me is that every summer a Spider-man movie is released, a Bourne movie is released as well. In 2002 - Spider-man and The Bourne Identity. 2004 - Spider-man 2 and The Bourne Supremacy. 2007 - Spider-man 3 and The Bourne Ultimatum. In every summer, the Spider-man movie comes out first, hits it big, Bourne movie comes out and hits it big. Will the third time NOT be the charm for both of these franchises?
Just a little FYI, The Bourne Identity was a huge sleeper hit in 2002. The movie was NEVER #1 in the BO top 10, but it still made over $120 and ended up making more than the other spy flick starring Damon's buddy, Ben Affleck, Sum of All Fears, which did open up at #1 opening weekend. That means the movie had tremendous word of mouth and great legs for the moviegoing audience. People dug this character. Bourne Identity became one of the best selling DVD's in 2003 which helped convince Damon to return.
It gave us something different than the majority of spy films. Something more back to basics, gritty, and realistic. A character that gets by using by the tools he has: hits wits, his brains, and his own physical skill rather than fancy gadgets. There weren't tons of explosions or bimbos with big fake ****, stupid names, or even dumber personalities and lines (HALLE BERRY AS JINX). These films owed a lot more to directors like Hitchock. Lo and behold, the movies became a success and ultimately the perfect franchise for star, Matt Damon.
Damon who has proven to be one of the smartest actors and movie stars in Hollywood, someone who's proven how to pick his roles properly rather than basically flush his career down the toilet like his certain co-Academy Award winner as well as managing to try and keep his private life private rather than creating public relationship fiascos like Brad Pitt, Ben Affleck, J-Lo, Tom Cruise, etc.
You can see the influence of the Bourne films in new movies like Batman Begins and even the next Bond film, Casino Royale, which took similar approaches.
So The Bourne Ultimatum. Here's what we know:
-Due for an 8/3/07 release date. August actually isn't a bad release date. A lot of movies have performed strongly there, even Supremacy though it was released in late July. It will have the advantage of not being set during in the middle of a lot of other high profile and big time releases. A smart and intelligent release date.
-Paul Greengrass coming off of a relative success in United 93, is returning to direct Ultimatum after doing a great job with Supremacy.
-Matt Damon is back as Jason Bourne. Bourne's still a rogue govt. assassin that was able to clear his charges from espionage in the last movie. He was last seen in New York City having correspondence with the CIA official Pamela Landy. Bourne now knows he was Bourne as Jason Webb.
-Tony Gilroy returned as the screenwriter once again. Consistency in the writing team of a blockbuster movie franchise? GOD FORBID! Gilroy and co. are moving on from the books and establishing their own storyline for the third movie. In the Ultimatum novel by Robert Ludlum, Bourne was put up against the real-life assassin known as the Jackal.
-Joan Allen and Julia Stiles are returning as Pamela Landy and Nicky respectively. Now that Marie (Franka Potente), Xorn (Gabriel Mann), and Abott (Brian Cox) were all iced in the second movie, it looks like unfortunately Nicky is the only returning character from the last 2 movies other than Bourne. But then again, Chris Copper appeared in the second movie via flashback/dream sequences.
-Also unfortunately, judging by comments from the producer, it looks like Nicky will be the new love interest, since we know she has a "bigger role".
