Robert Downey Jr. to Voice Lead in 'Peabody & Sherman' Film

Move over 'Bill & Ted,' because Peabody and Sherman are taking over time travel and leaving your special phone booth back in 1989.

Oscar-nominated actor Robert Downey Jr. will voice the genius dog known as Mr. Peabody in DreamWorks Animation's "Peabody and Sherman," an individual familiar with the project has confirmed to TheWrap.

Created in the late 1950s/early-60s as characters on the "Rocky and Bullwinkle Show," Peabody and his pet boy, Sherman, were famous for using a computerized device called 'The WABAC Machine' to travel through time and discover improbable things about historical figures.

Rob Minkoff ("Stuart Little") will direct the movie, which aims to re-introduce the cartoon characters to a new generation of animation fans by 2014.

The team of Jeffrey Ventimilia and Joshua Sternin ("Yogi Bear") will write the screenplay, and while it remains a mystery as to which historical figures Peabody and Sherman will meet, the movie will serve as the duo's origin story.

The studio considered doing the project as a live-action/animation hybrid, but ultimately decided to make it fully computer animated, in 3D, of course.

DreamWorks Animation artists are already conceptualizing designs for Mr. Peabody using Downey's image, though the role of Sherman hasn't been cast yet.

Downey Jr. is represented by CAA and his involvement in the DWA project was first reported by Entertainment Weekly.

This could either go very bad, or very well.

It's not live action. The article says the studio considered live action but ultimately decided to make it fully computer animated.

As a kid, Sherman's voice kind of annoyed me, so I hope they don't try and replicate that. :o Aside from that, I loved the **** out of that cartoon.

Concept art of Mr. Peabody.

It does resemble RDJr in a way, got that Dreamworks eyebrows going on too.
Oh and like Drizzle said, it's not in live-action is in CG actually.

Yeah, I didn't read the whole article. My excitement overwhelmed me.

First look at the characters.

I can honestly see RDJ's voice coming out of that smug ass dog.

Did Mr. Peabody ever actually say, "Quiet, you" to Sherman or was that just a Simpsons thing?

RDJ isnt playing Peabody, according to /Film it will be Ty Burrell from Modern Family.

With Ty, he sounds like a dude. And I guess that's what they're doing with Mr. Peabody; not unlike Seth doing Brian's voice with his normal voice. And it works.

I agree. I am looking forward to this because I happen to find Burrell one of the funniest dudes on TV. I don't think I've seen an episode of Modern Family where one of his lines didn't have me rolling.

If this works out, they should take a crack at the moose and squirrel, just to save them from the disgrace of the live action movie.

You didn't hear this from me but there will be a rocky and bullwinkle short right before the movie that dreamworks is working on.

Yeah, I can see another Rocky and Bullwinkle. Thanks, Batfan.

Mr. Peabody & Sherman – Directed by Rob Minkoff and featuring the voices of Ty Burrell, Max Charles, Ariel Winter, Allison Janney, Stephen Colbert, Stephen Tobolowsky, Mel Brooks, Leslie Mann and Stanley Tucci, Mr. Peabody & Sherman opens November 1, 2013 in 3D.

Based on title characters created by Jay Ward (whose daughter Tiffany is an executive producer on the film), Mr. Peabody & Sherman centers on the smartest dog in the world and his boy, respectively. After being in various states of production over the last seven years, the project is currently under the direction of Rob Minkoff (The Lion King). Since it’s still about a year away from being released, this picture had the roughest animation of the three. However, a finished and refined introductory clip for the title characters showed Mr. Peabody (voiced by Burrell) and Sherman (Charles) in fully-realized, computer-generated three-dimensional bodies, rather than the 2D cartoons of their forebears.

The opening sequence of the film was shown next, with Mr. Peabody and Sherman having arrived in late-18th century France during Queen Marie Antoinette’s reign and the French Revolution. When Sherman goes in search of cake, the duo runs afoul of the mob and Mr. Peabody is almost beheaded. Thanks to some quick thinking on his part, he manages to escape the guillotine, dodge the pursuit of Maximilien Robespierre and get the both of them safely back home. While the animation was still in rough stages, I can speak a little on tone. Mr. Peabody is basically Sherman’s father and educator, using his WABAC time machine to transport them back in time to discover the truths that history books have forgotten. This scene perfectly captured the dynamic between the characters and is a nice throwback to the original cartoon. Mr. Peabody is a stuffy know-it-all, but is quite the capable Renaissance man who has Sherman’s best interests at heart. Sherman is an innocent and ignorant young boy who is fiercely loyal to his father…though he occasionally disobeys him, as boys will do.

The next clip established the inciting incident of Mr. Peabody & Sherman. After Sherman gets into a fight with rival classmate Penny, Mr. Peabody invites the girl and her parents to his penthouse in order to smooth things over. Matters get more complicated when Sherman shows Penny the WABAC machine and manages to lose her somewhere in time. The rest of the film follows the duo traveling through history, including stops in the Italian Renaissance and during the Trojan War, in order to bring Penny home safely and repair history in the process. Mr. Peabody & Sherman looks like a fun addition to the DreamWorks line-up and could maybe even teach your kids a thing or two! Here’s the updated synopsis:
Mr. Peabody, the world’s smartest talking dog, has invented a time machine he calls the WABAC, which enables Peabody and his adopted human son Sherman to witness world-changing events first hand. But when Sherman breaks the rules of time travel, our two heroes find themselves in a race to repair history – and save the future. Kablooie! Reimagined for the big screen in CG and 3D, Mr. Peabody & Sherman is based upon the classic animated series produced by the legendary Jay Ward (“The Adventures of Rocky and Bullwinkle”).

Well, they needed some kind of excuse to keep going through time, and that's as good as any.

Mr. Peabody & Sherman

We were not expecting the sharp turn Mr. Peabody & Sherman took halfway into the clip reel, narrated by the director Rob Minkoff — but we're glad they're not afraid to tackle the strange situation of a dog who has adopted a human boy as his son.

More on that later, but for now let's just talk about the massive upgrades this 1950s cartoon underwent. First (as you can see above) Mr. Peabody and Sherman are now CG characters. This adds a whole heap of emotion. Instead of the cross-eyed Sherman you now see a toothy-smiled child with a great smile. He's all heart. Mr. Peabody (who doesn't emote too much until things start going wrong for him) looks older and wiser — but never impatient or condescending (something we were worried would happen in the new version). He loves Sherman.

Together they live in a completely amazing mid century vision of the futuristic apartment. They've got oodles of cash (thanks to Peabody enterprises) but remain the kind characters we remember from way back. And speaking of the WABAC machine, hot damn. The new WABAC still has the nobs and red gadgets bobbing about in the background — but it stands alone in a giant room with a CG plated protector shield. Think Sphere.

The movie starts with another adventure, as Mr. Peabody is guiding Sherman through the French Revolution. Through a cake mishap, Mr. Peabody is headed towards the guillotine. He escapes and then retells his brilliant plan, Sexy New Robert Downey Jr. Sherlock Holmes-style — complete with instant replay diagram. It's adorable.
They hop into the WABAC machine, after learning a valuable lesson and head home for an early bedtime. Why? Because tomorrow is Sherman's first day of school. Sadly, Sherman's first day does not go that great. He inadvertently shows up another classmate (the blonde Penny). This leads to a fight. Penny makes fun of Sherman's father being a dog, and then calls Sherman a dog himself. Sherman retaliates by biting her.

Child Protective Services are called. Mr. Peabody is brought in and the CPS states that if Penny's parents want to press charges, Mr. Peabody will lose custody of Sherman. Mr. Peabody is distraught and appalled by Sherman's behavior. But he goes silent when he finds out this whole thing was spurred by the "dog" insult. The next logical step? Invite Penny and her family over for dinner. While Mr. Peabody wines and dines Penny's Parents, Sherman shows off the WABACK machine. And you can only guess what happens next. Penny gets lost, and it's up to Mr. Peabody and Sherman to get her back, before her parents find out.

It's surprisingly dark — but this big plot twist lends itself to real emotional attachement to these characters. I could have watched the whole thing, even in this unfinished state. The cherry on top has to be Ty Burrell (the Dad from Modern Family) as Mr. Peabody — he aces it. That's all we got to see thus far, but Minkoff promises the movie will include ancient Egypt, the Italian Renaissance and the Trojan War.

All in all, this was way better than we expected, and we're ready to see more.
