Paramount/Dreamworks sides with HD-DVD in the Hi-Def war

why cant companies do what they do best? triple dip. you get:

Movie X DVD
Movie X Special Edition DVD ( a few months later)
Movie X HD DVD
Movie X HD Special Edition DVD
Movie X Blue-Ray
Movie X Blue-Ray Special Edition

not to mention box sets in all three formats, collectors crap in everything...jeez.

And in 10-15 years I bet there will be new formats after Blu-ray and HD-DVD(a lot are already in development) and they'll start all over again...

Of course, you'll have something in 4k resolution most likely.

Paramount screwed over 2/3 of the HD market yesterday. Michael Bay got so POd at them over this that he is now threatening not to direct Transformers 2. I think that Steven Spielberg is going to use his influence to get this all straightened out. I do not think that Paramount's descision will be very long lived. If it were me, and To$hiba offered me $150M to stop making Blu-Ray, I would have told them to shove that check up their collective @$$es.

Well spoken. Although I wouldn't call what Bay said a threat, I'd call it a straight-out no.

:whatever: Typical BR fanboy. If Paramount screwed over 2/3's of the HD Market (which combined BR and HD DVD only make up 1.5% of the market) then Fox, Disney and Lionsgate have screwed over 1/3 of the market. Spielberg is not going to influence anything because the deal stipulated that only Spielberg directed films will have to be on both formats. Spielberg did not direct Transformers therefore Paramount can release it on any format they choose which is DVD and HD DVD. The so called 150 million dollar pay day is not the only reason for HD DVD exclusivity. The costs to make HD DVD's are cheaper than BR, that also comes in to play. You act like HD DVD has no right to the market and you are wrong, plain and simple.

Then why is the market choosing Blu-Ray over HD-DVD, and why is the gap getting bigger every month? :cmad:

The majority chose Blu-Ray, and so abandoning Blu-Ray is worse than abandoning HD-DVD. Plain and simple!

:whatever: No, the market is buying into the PS3 and the actual movie sales are at a constant 2:1 ratio. The gap is not getting bigger, it is constant at 2:1, even with 80-100,000 PS3's selling every month. For BR to continue to sell through the PS3 and have a movie sales ratio stay at 2:1 is not making the gap bigger, it's showing the viability of HD DVD.

The majority chose BR? The only reason BR is where it is, is because of the PS3 and like I said it still can't manage to break the 2:1 sales ratio with HD DVD, which has 330,000 players on the market. Remember, combined, the HD market only makes up 1.5% of total media sales. The war is still just beginning...it's too early to say that one format will definitely come out on top. Abandoning BR is worse than abandoning HD DVD? Riiiiiggggghhhhttt, whatever you say man. This is a business...Sony was playing hardball and now Toshiba is too. Get over it.

WB is leaning HD-DVD. Just look at the 300 DVD. It is on both Blu Ray and HD and regular DVD, but guess what dvd has the most bonus features... HD-DVD.

Well, Warner is planning to double dip next year on Blu-ray when actual players with profile 1.1 start coming out. If Blu-ray would have been finalized from the beginning of course, they would have both been equal in the extra features department without a double dip.

I just want Transformers 2 Bay style and if getting paramount to switch gets this then i want paramount to switch.

Paramount will not switch. They are HD DVD exclusive for the next couple of years. If Bay will be so childish to not do Transformers 2, there are other directors who can take over that are qualified for the job. Heck, probably be a better film without Bay anyways. Maybe this time, we can get a better story and acting.

Your opinion on the quality of the film but Bay had already said that he had ideas and i can see him being pissed that Blu-Ray peeps dont get there DVD cause they dont have a a couple hundered dollars to throw down on 2 players. As a director he wants everyone to see his efforts and what he spent so much time on. Its like if you made a painting and you could only put it in one type of frame and then it cant be put into a gallery you were aiming for because the powers that be said the other frame just wasnt right. you'd be pissed too.

That's why it is also going to be released on DVD, so everyone can see it. Not everyone cares about High Def and all that implies.

And screw Micheal Bay, They won't care if he doesn't do the sequel. They could get anyone to direct Transformers 2 and it will get huge B.O.

I don't see why any director would get pissed when the High Def market only makes up 1.5% of media sales. It's not like they aren't going to release the film on the biggest money maker which is and will be DVD for the foreseeable future. You don't see Peter Jackson upset that King Kong is only on HD DVD and not on BR. You don't see the Wachowski's upset that the Matrix is exclusive to HD DVD for the time being, or Christopher Nolan with BB. If Michael Bay, as a director, wanted everyone to see his efforts and all the time he spent on making the movie he would act this way torward Disney for not releasing Pearl Harbor on both HD DVD and BR. Or, upcoming releases of Armeggeddon or The Rock. So that is a lame excuse and makes Michael Bay an even bigger hypocrite than he already was. What Michael Bay cares about is royalties, and in the scheme of things, from the very little that he would make in BR royalties he is acting incredibly childish. And to forgo getting over 20+ million dollars for Transformers 2 just because Transformers will only be released on DVD and HD DVD is beyond idiotic. The royalties he may see from BR wouldn't even buy him a Porsche.

NEWSFLASH:

This whole FCKING WAR IS STUPID!!!!!

Yeah, that's right- both- HD and Blu-Ray "fanboys", both sides are MORE than CHILDISH!

I seriously can not believe that it has gotten as far as it has, this goes for BOTH sides.

Films are made to reach the WIDEST audience possible and what HD and Blu-Ray are doing through this more than IDIOTIC war is completely going against that! Film viewing is not meant to be segregated like it's becoming. That's fckin' CHEAP and CHILDISH!

I can't believe not that many people here can see this war for what it really is- the dumbest "war" in the history of "wars."

This is exactly why I didn't buy into HD and Blu-Ray and remain NEUTRAL. This fckin' war is starting to get out of hand.

At least Spielberg acknowledges that. :)

And Bay is making his STAND which is MORE than justified, through using TF. Which through Spielberg's backing- TF for EVERYONE and Bay on TF2

Oh, so the war is stupid only because HD DVD is fighting this just like Sony is and the only ones who acknowledge that the war is stupid are BR supporters? Wow, and your talking about fanboys? :o

We should be getting a blu-ray/HD-dvd duel player soon...(a quality one at least) then the studios can whine and battle each other all they like without hurting the consumer.

LMAOL. FIX YOUR GOD DAMN READING COMPREHENSION!!!!!

I am fckin' neutral, I don't own one or the other!

BOTH ARE FCKIN' CHILDISH AND SO ARE THE ONES WHO OWN THEM!

Not all of the ones who own them, but MANY. Hell the paast couple of days reminds me more of being on a playground surrounded by a bunch of children screaming "nananana poo poo". :cwink:

The only ones who can comprehend this thing are the people on the outside looking in- which going by these forums isn't many. And you just proved that point by your lack of reading comprehension in the post above- so thank you.

Your talking about childish behavior? Have you read your post you just posted in this thread and I think you need the reading comprehension. I quoted what you said about Spielberg and Bay. You ranted on about how this war is stupid and both sides are stupid but then you mention that Bay is justified for his stance and Spielberg (who prefers BR) acknowledges the war is stupid. So, what your saying is that Bay is justified for acting like a child because BR won't get some of his movies...yet HD DVD will not get a majority of his movies such as The Rock, Bad Boys, Pearl Harbor, etc. :whatever:

Spielberg is not getting involved in the war. All of Spielberg's movies are available on ALL formats- so maybe he prefers Blu-Ray, but point is he doesn't support the war. Bay wants Transformers to be both formats so that EVERYONE can benefit and with Spielberg's backing on this whole ordeal, Bay can actually possibly manage to do just that.

POINT IS: There should be no fckin' war! And for those who are too caught up in it to acknowledge that point, I honestly feel sorry for you. Because BOTH sides of the war are frankly acting childish and I'm sticking to that.

This is why I chose not to buy HD or Blu-Ray, because this is starting to get ridiculous.

Maybe you didn't see the fact that Sony is going to release Close Encounters on BR which will only be on BR...so how is Spielberg not involved in the war?

If Bay wants Transformers on both formats then he should want all his films on both formats. He is being a hypocrite.

Okay then everyone is acting childish. Point is this war SUCKS and many who support one side or another are acting childish as well. Best vantage point is neutral- no ties to either so that one can see this mess for what it reall is.

Best solution: A DVD player compatible of playing both, that way both sides lose and ALL CONSUMERS WIN.

Sounds reasonable, except for the prices, although they should come down eventually. At the moment, you can get a HD DVD player and BR player for about 700 bucks total whereas with a combo unit your talking 900-1000.

Just need something to shut both sides up and avoid them from view-blocking the audience.
