Bzzt! Wrong.
Sony's insistence that everything would be 100% backwards compatible.
Sony's insistence that they could do 1080p, but delivered a downgraded signal forcing players to drop to 480.
etc, etc.
The backwards compatability issues was fixed within only a few firmare updates, it is a non issue. And the issues regarding HD output is that users with older HDTVs that only output at 1080i cannot view 720p content without downscaling it to 480p, but this is a problem that is only affecting much older HDTVs, and so it is really no where near as big a deal as fanboys want it to be. And if those are the best two examples you can come up with for PS3 having hardware problems, then please do not try to stretch it by adding "etc. etc." at the end, because that just means you have no more ammunition left.
RE: Hard drive. Kinda like Sony did last year. I guess Sony copying Microsoft's last year is innovative. They're now bundling the core units with memory cards, problem solved.
Oh great, so a 50MB memory card is supposed to solve the issue of 6GB of maps, textures, and sound effects not being able to get cached onto an HDD. Brilliant. If a 50MB memory card could compensate for having 9GB of data cache, then maybe Grand Theft Auto 4 and Unreal Tournament 3 wouldn't have been delayed.
RE: HDMI. If you have a TV that supports it. Much like the HD/Blu Ray stuff, we're not talking about the majority of end users. Personally, I have one, and it's not much difference other than freeing up a component slot.
HDMI is officially standard on all HDTVs. If your HDTV does not have HDMI, or even DVI input, it's obviously an older model. Anyone buying an HDTV from the last two years to today is going to have HDMI input, and if they're dropping 400 or more clams on a device to hook up to it, the expectation is that it will be able to use HDMI. MS did not adress this until only this year, and they won't even be fully implementing it into all consoles until later this year, when it should have been available at launch.
So, you're saying options are a bad thing. No wonder you want the format war over.
Options are a bad thing when it ends up making the whole experience half-@$$ed. Since Microsoft chose to not include hard drives with some Xbox 360, it's making it extremely difficult to get a lot of games, like Grand Theft Auto 4 and Unreal Tournament 3 to run on it without requiring the hard drive, something that Microsoft will not allow. If Microsoft had not given people the option of buying a gimped, incomplete Xbox 360, then maybe GTA4 and Unreal Tournament (the 360 version, at least), would still be on track to release this year. Sony included everything that they believe a developer could forseeably want with the PS3, with the exception of additional RAM (however, this problem is being increasingly reduced with firmware updates, which are causing the PS3's OS to take up less and less of the available RAM).
At least we can mostly agree on this. Hopefully you'll stick around and contribute to the board instead of dragging the board into format/console wars. There's other boards for that.
I have been a significant contributor to these forums in the past, but if you haven't noticed, the Paramount contract with Toshiba is a big deal, and it didn't take long for it to degrade into pointless Sony bashing. I happen to own a PS3, and like anyone who enjoys the things they buy and support, I do not take very kindly to it being bashed unless I too am allowed my two cents.
