Personal History that would keep you from voting for someone

I went to a top 10 small University, I had one year on a Pell Grant, and then I did short term loans for the rest of my schooling. I graduated not owing a cent for my college...I worked 30 hours a week, went to school full time. It can be done....not in 4 years, but it can be done.... : )

It is ironic that one of the most corrupt presidents in history (Nixon), was also the most faithful to his wife.

Point is though, if you can't trust a guy to not betray the trust of the woman he promised himself to, how can you trust him to do anything else?

It's not just Nixon though, asides from Clinton, pretty much all the Presidents from Ford to Carter to Reagan to the Bushes and Obama have been pretty damn devoted to their wives. In today's day and age, it's just unacceptable for a President to take up a mistress.

I agree with this.

It's immoral, sure, but I don't think it changes, say, FDR's accomplishments as President.
Exactly.

While I think a history of drugs (cocaine, heroin, whatever) would be a big no-no, I have no problem when I find out someone used to go out drinking and partying in college or whatever. If they got decent grades and graduated, I see no problem if a photo of them stumbling out of a bar or doing shots pops up online.

Excessive theocratic leanings and a terrible financial record.

If somebody on the ticket used to work for Halliburton or some big bank, I am losing interest(sadly when you look at how a President fills his cabinet, they generally litered with these big business guys)

Newt Gingrich's personal history bothers me.

Same here. Serial divorcing doesn't speak well for a person. Neither does abuse of other people. (Not to say that Newt has done that.) But if a person were found to be physically or verbally abusive to someone, I wouldn't support them. Also, if someone seems "overly religious" to me. Mike Huckabee comes to mind. I wouldn't mind voting for an atheist, however. Ditto the financial history.

Assuming it is not murder or something extreme, there would be a time limit for me, i.e. if it is not within the past 20-30 years (depending upon ones age), I really could care less. The incident about Romney when he was in prep school is a good example of just useless information; the 64 year old candidate was like 14 at the time. Ditto whatever Obama felt like snorting 30 years ago.

While things like that can really be written off as essentially immaturity, others which reveal far deeper character & value concerns bother me. Newt Gingrich's cringe worthy personal background being a prime & recent example. It is way beyond adultery; his own party loathed him & he really just is not a good person. That is pretty much a prerequisite for for any plausible candidate. All major candidates since Nixon, I see no real character flaws which would would prevent me from voting for then (Bill & adultery, that just makes me respect him less, not alter my view on his ability to govern).

Regarding how one should pay for college- it is just not the same as it once was. Not like there is an over abundance of jobs out there to begin with, but the idea of committing to academics full time & working enough to pay off the obscene prices of college by the end of the education? Either said individual will not sleep for four years, or they will earn a GPA in the 2.0 range, assuming they are naturally bright.

My Father worked full time while he was in college; 3 diff. jobs through four years while being the captain of his schools baseball team his final two years (no lie, IDK how he did it and why I didnt get those hard working genes :cmad::p). His GPA upon graduating was like a 2.7 or something, but because of the crazy workload he had accomplished, he little trouble landing (and thriving in) a high level business job. But that was forty years ago.

Today - espec. today, when for many entry level jobs, there are dozens of middle aged professionals seeking the same spot - it just doesn't work like that. I cannot talk about work loads of forty years ago, but the workload I suffered in college made working 30 hour weeks impossible. Working 10 hour weeks would have been tough.

It is why parents reallllly need to get the 529s going EARLY. Or be prepared to help their children out with loan repayment. College has become a requirement for success in our country (which is fine), but the price has sky rocketed. I would never fault a candidate for declaring bankruptcy due to college loan debt.

I mean, if he took out like 200k to go to Cooley Law or something, maybe I would, because he clearly has no on intelligence whatsoever. But most often, I would never fault them, rather those are the people most deserving of sympathy. We are the land of opportunity, and bettering yourself is NEVER easy. That is just a prime example, and I would never criticize someone for trying to better themselves, in order to provide a better future for themselves and their families.

I would not vote for someone with homophobic views, because I will not support our country being represented in 2012 by someone with primitive beliefs.

-If they were abusive towards their family or companion.

- Tax evasion / foreign bank accounts.

-If they are/were an Evangelist.

-Dishonorable discharge from the military. Or, if they committed war crimes (which are not punished as severely as they should be.)

- If they believe in conspiracy theories.

-At last, but not least, a history of racism, homophobia, or xenophobia.

 evil.

And before anyone says 'Oh the Bilderberg's just want a closed door meeting for 3 days...nothing wrong with that.' CEO's, people high up in Govt should not be allowed closed door meetings about world policys and what not. Huffington Post, The Washington Times covered it briefly this year. Last year FoxNews mentioned it for a few seconds as well.

As for me...I honestly don't know what would draw me off for not voting..I guess a person like Mitt and Paul Ryan. Or anybody Democratic or Republican in general, although Huntsman is a good person and would probably be a good Republican President. Gary Johnson was Republican but his actions were really libertarian, and now he is a Libertarian, as he is running under the LP this year. Pretty much anybody that supports NDAA or Patriot Act...

:csad: oh ****, Huntsman supports NDAA...

How old were you when you graduated, if you don't mind my asking?
