Peter Jackson's Mortal Engines

Yeah. Gotta give it the benefit of the doubt considering the creative team. Conceptually & visually I guess it's just not clicking with me yet, but obviously going to keep an open mind.

If the budget is set at 'only' $100m, (I know that's still a lot of money to us) but if it is, I can see this bringing in around $350m WW so there is every chance of them continuing the story, in more films, but the popular transfer of YA fiction doesn't always transfer, back in the day, I would have put a lot on Golden Compass doing well at the Box Office and in comparison, Mortal Engines has another $80m to play with in wriggle room from it's lesser budget.

I'm just getting over-all awesome vibes from this movie - it looks incredible to me.

Aquaman, into the spiderverse, bumblebee, mary poppins and a couple of other films all open at the same time. Can't see it making $300m but might be wrong.

I don't think the interest is there for this one, unless like Hunger Games or Fifty Shades, this is based on a popular book.

Actually that budget is amazing. I thought it cost a LOT more than that.

Anyone know running time yet?

Well, a popular book in England, anyways.

Yeah, I want this to do well but I think the domestic box office is going to be pretty poor. The hook just doesn't seem to be landing with the American audience and they don't really have any star names to sell it. I've basically heard no one talk about it.

I think there is okay international potential but unlike, say, Pacific Rim (which flopped in the US but did well enough overseas to get a sequel), I don't think this is going to have legs in any of the larger markets.

This reminds me of an anime I watched awhile back, Chrome Shelled Regios. Where moving cities had wars over resources. Though that anime also had sci-fi powered characters using high tech swords, telekenisis, and tactics as well. The city fighting parts were only a portion of the plot though.

Anyway, I'll probably watch this. Jackson's a good director, and the overall idea isn't bad.

I love the passion behind it, but this just looks so generic. Hopefully the movie itself is good but I don't know if Christian Rivers can pull off the heart and not just the visuals.

Pete sounds like he is half asleep in that featurette.

You can tell Peter Jackson didn't direct it by the runtime. :)

That's still pretty damn long. I feel like a bulk of that is gonna be angst and exposition.

Hey, Peter Jackson's done plenty of modest-length movies! Just not recently! :)

As someone who has read the book, I think a 2-hour run-time is perfect. A LOT happens in terms of the characters and plot, so even at 2 hours it is probably going to be a movie that kind of blurs along (hopefully it has enough breather moments that are effective in getting us connected with the characters).

The book's pretty good at explaining everything that is going on and the character motivations while still moving at a brisk pace and not feeling overly expositional, so hopefully the movie can find the same balance.
