The title explains it all.. some saying's we all know but how many make sense? especially in todays world?

One in particular to me is "Have your cake and eat it too" we all get this saying.. but who the hell gets a cake and doesn't to eat it? That is the point of cake.

Yea, that's definitely one I've always wondered about.

I have some, I just can't think of them right now. I'm mildly drunk, and highly tired.

"Clean your room."

"Do your homework."

"Don't have sex with your girlfriend."

A bird in the hand is worth two in the bush

Call a spade a spade

You can lead a horticulture but you can't make her think

Though this be madness, yet there is method in it

YES! Please someone clear this up. It's been bugging me for years!

Well for me it is an expression which means you cannot hold on to something for future consumption and consume it now. There is only one cake and one use for it. In the same way you cannot keep a dollar you just spent. I always thought it made sense.

Similarly, a bird in hand refers to things you have actual ownership of are worth more to you then things that exist outside of your ownership.

From "Random House Dictionary of Popular Proverbs and Sayings" by Gregory Y. Titelman:
"You can't have your cake and eat it too -- One can't use something up and still have it to enjoy. This proverb was recorded in the book of proverbs by John Heywood in 1546, and is first attested in the United States in the 1742 'Colonial Records of Georgia' in 'Original Papers, 1735-1752.' The adage is found in varying forms: You can't eat your cake and have it too. You can't have everything and eat it too; Eat your cake and have the crumbs in bed with you, etc. ..."

it's still stupid, why have a cake period if you're not going to eat it? Who really wants an uneaten cake to stay that way?

Up until literally a couple weeks ago, I never understood the Forrest Gump adage: "Stupid is as stupid does" . . . I get it now, but it's kind of confusion to me . . .

the whole cake saying means, when you actually HAVE some cake, you can always look forward to eating it . . . but once you've eaten it, it's gone!

A rolling stone gathers no moss.

Never look a gift horse in the mouf.

Me and a coworker were actually trying to figure out where the phrase "Peachy Keen" came from.

He claims it's just a southern thing but I've heard it in several movies/tv shows.

I know it's used to basically say everything is in good shape, but does anyone know where it comes from?

It's simple. All it means is that you can't have everything you want. Once you eat the cake, you no longer have cake.

This one is a sexual connotation. :o
