Phrases and Sayings that you understand the meaning, but really don't make any sense

I know that but a wick is braided and limp and ... yeah not sure how it is compared to:o

They used to make candles by dipping the wick into the wax, letting it dry, and dipping it again. So basically, it's going in and out of the wax repeatedly. You should get the picture by now.
 
"Eat your heart out!"....I know what it means I don't get why of ALL phrases this is so popular.


And I know what they both mean but its always been a little funny how:
fat chance = slim chance
 
"Salt of the earth" I know it's biblical in origin, but I've never really gotten how it's a compliment. Like when you say "They were real salt of the earth people". Huh?
