Playstation 4 in development

A game (or anything else for that matter) can't become a "cult classic" overnight. We won't know which games of this generation are "classics" of any kind until we move beyond it, gain some perspective, and look back at it objectively.

That's a good point to be fair. You win this round.

And I think those people are totally crazy.

It's definitely on my top 10

Absolutely. They "lost" the last two generations, and they turned it around and handily put themselves back on top with the Wii.

Financially, sure, that's obvious. The Wii is the biggest joke of a system around though. It's had its greats, but that's about it. It's a terrible system that hit a drought straight out of the gate and then had a bone tossed every 4 - 6 months. In the context of Resident Evil 4 (taking a near-stale franchise and turning it on it's head to become one of the biggest games on the planet), no Nintendo doesn't count. It's not about financial success; Nintendo really let a lot of people down this generation.

Why not? It probably sold more than all Uncharted and Mass Effect games combined. That's not a hit? I guess we need to define what we're talking about here. Are we talking about "hits"? Are we talking about Metacritic ratings? Or are we talking about "games Electro UK likes a lot".

We're talking about the kind of games that will leave a lasting impact on how developers see and make games in the future. Black Ops was clearly not one of those games, mostly because it's already a result of Modern Warfare 1, which is another game I'd include.

So a game is only a "hit" if it can be considered by you to be in the running for the "best game of all time"?

By the way, the "best game of all time" label is, in itself, a really dumb idea. (No offense.) What metric are we using? Sales? Review scores? Influence on the industry? How many people wax nostalgic about it on message boards?

Some games are so wildly different, that it's impossible to compare them. How are you going to say something like, "Final Fantasy VI is better than Red Dead Redemption, but not as good as Tetris." I mean, can you see the lunacy of that statement? Those three games are so deeply, fundamentally different that I don't see how anyone could say that one is better than the other, let alone compare them in any meaningful way.

That's another discussion entirely. I'm not saying I disagree with you at all, I'm just saying there aren't many games this generation that I've played getting the feeling that it will go down as one of the greats. It's an opinion and that's how it is, you don't need to challenge it at every turn. It's just how I feel about this generation looking back (so far).

Crazy, I say!!

You're right about that. I'm sure in the future, looking back, comparing the different Call of Duty games will probably be about as pointless as comparing the different versions of Madden.

And now that we've nailed down what it is we're talking about...

...you're right again! I probably shouldn't have included a company in a discussion about individual games.

Also, I used to be a die-hard Nintendo fan, so I'm fully aware of how bad they've let their fans down. Choosing to focus entirely on the casual market, largely ignoring their fans until last year, and not fostering good relationships with third-party developers gained them some quick money up front, but hurt them in the long run. Satoru Iwata himself has said as much.

I didn't mean to "challenge" your opinion. Sorry if I came off as being hostile or something. It wasn't my intention.

What the? You guys do know this is a message board debate right? Civility has no place in it.:o

As far as the the PS4 goes, we all knew MS and Sony were working on the next gen already. It's just the nature of the business. I think we will see it in 2013/14.

No offense taken Soap, I didn't mean to come across all ********* anyways, it's nice to have an actual conversation/debate about games on the internet without being called an idiot or a fanboy for once.

E3 for Sony.....Next year will be damn interesting!

I'll only be getting this if it has backwards compatibility with all previous Playstations.

I still have all PS systems, so no biggie.
Though it'd be great, I don't think Sony cares about that anymore.

I would guess that it will only be BC with PS3 games. I'd think they would want to move away from PS2 and PS1 games, especially if they are going to continue remastering the old classics.

I think it will be as KALEL says. Playstation 4 will probably be able to play PS3 games, but no PS2 or PS1 games.

How are they going to sell old games to you again if you could just play the copy you already have?

Considering how the PS3 has PS1 backwards compatibility, I'd be surprised if they didn't have it with the PS4. It's the PS2 I'm mostly worried about. Or better yet, they should offer two models. A cheaper one for those who don't care and a more expensive one for those who want it.

Unless the graphics literally look like real life, complete with the ability to jack yourself into it via the Matrix, it's going to fall short of all expectation.

Well, the only PS3's that really have FULL BC are the early models. Sony phased them all out, and didn't give us BC in the new models for a reason. I don't see the PS4 being BC with anything other than PS3 games. I will say that I better be able to carry my PSN purchases over to the PS4.

They dropped PS2 backwards compatibility due to cost issues. That's why it would be best to offer two different models: one that doesn't have backwards compatibility and one that does to make up for the increase in cost.

But that is if they continue to use the blu-ray technology, right?
I don't know what are their plans.

I am 100% sure it will still be BR. Sony has been pushing that and 3-D hardcore and will keep using it for sure. Honestly, I would be a little surprised if came with a DVD drive at all. I could see them go strictly BR to keep costs down.

Late last week, Sony chief financial officer Masaru Kato said, "For the home equipment the PS3 still has a product life, but this is a platform business, so for the future platform—when we'll be introducing what product I cannot discuss that—but our development work is already under way, so the costs are incurred there." That sounded like he was talking about the PS4. Sony now say he wasn't. A Sony Computer Entertainment spokesperson tells Japan's J-Cast News that the "future platform" referred to is Sony's upcoming portable, the NGP, and not the PS4.
According to J-Cast News, Sony Japan was surprised to see Western sites writing that the PS4 was under development. When J-Cast asked Sony about the PlayStation 4, the Tokyo-based electronics giant stated, "We have nothing to announce at this time."

Well, ok then.
I thought it was, like, confirmed.

The PS3 is strictly blu-ray. The BD drive is capable of reading the DVD format and also upscales them for HDTVs.
