Is there anything semen cannot do.

When Hollywood movies open on a jungle scene, usually the same sound is heard in each movie, namely an animal cry that goes something like "oohoohoohoo-aaaah-aaaah-aaaaah". Perceived by many as a monkey's holler, it's actually the call of a particular parrot that is found exclusively in the Australian outback, regardless of what jungle the movie supposedly takes place in.

In a semi-related fact,

Of the thousands of species of frog in the world, there is only one species that goes "ribbit". Different species of frogs can croak, squal, chirp, whistle and make any other number of sounds to attract mates. The reason we associate the "ribbit" sound with most frogs is because the lone ribbiting species dwells in southern California, with a large presence in the greater Los Angeles area. Hollywood filmmakers have recorded this frog's call and used it to evoke settings ranging from the Louisiana bayou to the jungles of Vietnam.

In a pivotal scene in the movie "The Usual Suspects", a total of 6 different people played the character of Keyser Söze. Among them were actors Gabriel Byrne, Kevin Spacey, Chazz Palminteri's double and director Bryan Singer. This could be pulled off cause his face cannot be clearly seen.

In one sequence, Gabriel Byrne (in character as Söze) was asked to shoot himself (as the character of Dean Keaton, which he played for most of the movie). The two shots were edited together later. Byrne admitted to being very confused by this while filming. It took Bryan Singer some convincing to assure him it would make sense in the final cut. Even after seeing the completed movie, Byrne remained unsure exactly who he was playing in which scene...

One particular sequence in the scene shows nothing other than a gloved hand dropping a burning sigarette onto a trail of gasoline and a foot walking away from it. It took three people to "act" out this sequence: Bryan Singer, writer Christopher McQuarry and one of the producers. One of them plays the gloved hand, the other the foot and yet another to drop the actual sigarette you see falling.

Bryan Singer explains this elaborate ploy is part of a ruse to obscure the identity of the mysterious Keyser Söze and to suggest that anyone could be Keyser Söze, even if they don't know it themselves.

Wouldn't a typewriter be the same as using a keyboard?

Not quite. There's inserting the paper (and the carbon + extra sheets if you want copies). Placing the roller against the paper to hold it in place. Then there's the whole carriage return business.

Basically it's the difference between driving a Stick shift and an Automatic.

Polar Bears aren't white. Their hair is transparent. Air gets trapped in the fur and gives the illusion of being white.

Weird Science

Green eggs and ham is a cute idea when you see it in a children’s book, but you may not think it’s so nifty if it actually ended up on your plate.

Scientists in Taiwan have bred transgenic pigs that are fluorescent green – both inside and out. Bright green proteins were injected into embryonic pigs producing three, green, male swine.

"There are partially fluorescent green pigs elsewhere, but ours are the only ones in the world that are green from inside out. Even their hearts and internal organs are green," professor Wu Shinn-Chih of National Taiwan University said.

Transgenic pigs are often used to study human diseases and the green ones could help researches monitor and trace changes in tissues during the physical development, researchers said.

Scientists in Taiwan are also responsible for creating the first transgenic glowing fish.

And you thought green ketchup was bad.

In a related story, when polar bears go hunting and are lying in wait near a prey (such as a seal), they cover their black noses with their paws, so that they totally blend in with the icey environment. Camouflage in action!

Statistically, there is more chance the thirteenth day of a month will fall on a friday than on any other day of the week.

B.H. Brown, a Dartmouth math professor in the 1930's discovered this strange fact. Over any given 400-year cycle the 13th day of the month occurs 4800 times. The distribution of 13th day of the month is as follows:
  • Monday ( 685 or 14.27% )
  • Tuesday ( 685 or 14.27% )
  • Wednesday ( 687 or 14.31% )
  • Thursday ( 684 or 14.25% )
  • Friday ( 688 or 14.34% )
  • Saturday ( 684 or 14.25% )
  • Sunday ( 687 or 14.31% )
This means the 13th day of the month is slightly more likely to occur on a Friday.

So statistically, it makes perfect sense that more "bad things" will happen on fridays the thirteenths than on any other day, since there are more of them.

It's a well known fact that the movie "Cruel Intentions" is an adaptation of the novel/film "Dangerous Liaisons", but did you know that "Clueless" (starring Alicia Silverstone) is actually a re-working of Jane Austen's "Emma" and that the utterly wretched "Barb Wire" (starring Pamela Anderson) lifted its entire plot from the classic film "Cassablanca"?
