Poisoning Ourselves

And that's perfectly understandable. I think that the most compelling arguments against GMOs concern potential ecological impacts. This would fall into that category, I think, even if indirectly.

I really don't see how we would. I don't think DNA is stable enough to survive our digestive tract, and the cells that would be immediately susceptible to lateral gene transfer die off pretty quickly. You'd also need something to actually deliver the promoters and incorporate them into the chromosomes directly. Viruses tend to have a high level of specificity with respect to the cells they invade, so even if virions were still present in the consumed product, the odds of them effectively invading human cells seem minuscule.

Then my assessment of the situation may very well be flawed. Did they find out why?

Seems as though it would be easy enough to do transcriptome analysis of GMO corn and compare it to non-GMO corn to pinpoint regions of increased gene expression and figure out which genes (and gene products) may be responsible. They've mapped the corn genome, I think. This may also reveal epistatic interactions, too.

They can't do that deep of research. GMO seeds are copyrighted and protected by corporations and their government sponsors.

There certainly appears to be a need for greater transparency...

I'm not anti-GMO (I think the technology has the potential to be incredibly useful), but I think companies like Monsanto are borderline evil.

I'm a vegetarian since day 1 of 2013. Guess what :wow:?! I still eat like crap. I just don't eat meat. I like Light Life products and Boca and Morning Star veggie burgers/veggie chicken.

I do try to eat slightly good at times by adding a banana or apple into my diet almost daily.

And I drink way too much coke (aka soda) :o but hey, I view our disease of a two-party system more worrisome than my diet. So boo yeah, Hype :jedi

True...it's a shame companies like Monsanto try to monopolize it, twisting into something bad. I actually go to a church that works with farmers in a few other countries and the stories I've heard from the missionaries that go over there (usually to help build things for them and provide free seed) is pretty bad with how Monsanto and the government deal with farmers.

It's practically slavery. They try to force foreign governments to push gmo seed on their locals farmers thereby being dependent on the seeds that "Self-destruct" after use, meaning that the farmers then have to buy a whole new batch of seeds, no re-use. They've manipulated and even threatened these people.

But I think that's truth for just about anything....something starts out good with potential to help humanity and corporations buy it up and twist it to make a profit...it's really sad to see humanities progress stalled because of this.

I'm not a vegetarian by any means...but I have become A LOT more careful about what I eat. I try to stay away from any meats that contain hormones or other chemicals and eat meat in much more moderation. After I started researching it more and figuring out what I could by...I was actually surprised to find that just about all meat is injected with this crap...you have to go to a tiny spot in the store to find something natural...

On a side note...why the frak is "Now made with real juice!" deserving of its own label? Shouldn't the drink called Orange Juice already BE real juice??? :)

I'm glad I went vegan a few months ago...
There seems to be one meat related scandal/scare after another these last few months.

I eat vegan.
I see more people freaking out and more kids acting crazy maybe because of all the crap they put into our food.
It is poison, doesnt mcdonalds contain plastic??

I cook my own food rarely eat out. I worked in the food industry amd saw how gross the food was and worse the people preparing it. So i stay away.

Vegan meals taste great to. I dont feel like sh t after eating non meat non dairy.

t it.

do you eat complete proteins? how much gram of proteins of bodyweight do you eat a day?
do you get your fat from fish oul or do you only get it from plants?

not eating meat is interesting but does it work ? some friends lost a lot of muscle mass.

Is our food terrible for us? No question. Still, I love food. It's one of my few major joys.

I think some GMOs have the potential to be lifesavers in places where farming is exceedingly difficult. Anti-drought plants definitely make sense.

But anti-Roundup? Ew.

I'll be the "bad guy" and come out as pro-GMO. I fully understand the concerns regarding hormones and antibiotic resistance; but without our "tampering" there'd be a few fruits and vegetables we wouldn't have or wouldn't be affordable due to their rarity. Not to mention GMOs keep me employed(Biotech company) :o

Not to mention, transposons are going to be the reason the very first superhuman is created. So there's that :p
