POLL: Most Disappointing Movie Sequel Ever? (Final Round!)

Damn, guys. How the hell is Speed 2 not up there?
Because Speed 1 sucked too. So no one was expecting the second one to be good.

According to POPULAR belief ( ;) ) Speed was a great action flick and the sequel was completely unnecessary and ridiculously useless.

The Naked Gun 33 1/3
Predator 2
Airplane 2
Starship Troopers 2
Alien 3 & Resurrection
Rocky 5

Okay, we've gotten over a hundred votes so far, on a Final Ballot with 25 candidates. Here's how it currently looks for the Top Five Places in this final round.

1. Batman and Robin: 25.0%

2. Highlander 2: 9.8%

3. The Matrix Revolutions: 8.9%

(tie) 4. Superman IV: The Quest for Peace 5.4%
(tie) 4. The Matrix Reloaded 5.4%

(tie) 5. Ocean's 12: 4.5%
(tie) 5. The Phantom Menace: 4.5%
(tie) 5. Terminator III: Rise of the Machines: 4.5%

Of course, I was only announcing this poll on boards with a heavy emphasis on comic book discussion, so that may have skewed the results in favor of Batman and Robin as a disaster that weighed heavily upon people's minds. If I'd been posting on, say, Star Wars discussion forums, I suspect we'd see The Phantom Menace do much "better" than only managing to be part of a three-way tie way down at fifth place.

(A note: I think Peter David once wrote that he attended an advance showing of the film "Batman and Robin" at DC's headquarters, and when Batman whipped out his trusty Bat-Visa Credit Card, PAD heard an anguished scream from another member of the audience sitting right behind him. He soon realized it was Denny O'Neil himself screaming. Understandably!)

The Matrix trilogy is the only series that managed to land two sequels in the Top Five Places where "Most Disappointing" is concerned. On the other hand, Arnold Schwarzenegger and George Clooney each have the honor of having placed twice on this list: Once in the movie that's currently in First Place, once apiece in other movies. Aside from those actors who were in both the second and third Matrix films, I don't think any other movie star had a significant role in more than one of the movies in the Top Five Places. (Tell me if I'm wrong!)

i voted for Superman IV. it killed the franchise :(

I went with "Speed 2". I can't call "Batman & Robin" disappointing b/c I never expected it to be good.

I wouldn't call Batman and Robin dissapointing because BF sucked so much, I wasn't expecting anything good.

Matrix 2-3 gets my vote

I actually liked "Batman Forever" when it came out. Sure, it had a different tone from Tim Burton's version of Batman in the first two movies, but it didn't go as far in the other direction as the terminally campy version in "Batman and Robin" that sometimes felt like it was based on the 1960s Batman TV show.

Slapshot 2 was not only a bad sequal but one of the worst movies ever.

Jurassic Park III. Always Jurassic Park III.

Horrible continuity, some of the worst I've ever seen not only between films in a series, but internally. Horrible, grating characters who are portrayed as unrealistically stupid (ahem, the divorced couple). ZERO plot logic. Half-assed scoring and directing. Toned-down dinosaurs with zero tension.

It is an abomination. People actually hate The Lost World, and I can't understand why they don't see that even if you don't like that one, it's fifty times better than JP3, one of the worst of "big budget" Hollywood's worst.

Did you expect it to be any good? The reason TLW was a let down is because it came after greatness that was JP. We all EXPECTED something as good or better than JP. After TLW, I did not care about JPIII. I knew it would be terrible. This thread is not about what is the worst sequel, it is about the biggest let dows... sequels to great movies that promised to be great and were not. For me, that was The Lost World.

both Lost World and JP III sucked.

The sad thing was the Lost World, as a novel, was decent. The movie was completely off!

Sorry, this poll sucks. This just turned into what is the worst superhero movie thread.

Eh, I thought the Lost World book was far worse than the movie. I dunno what Crichton was smoking. Although the info on evolutionary theory was interesting.

As I predicted, most people voted for Batman and Robin. But I do have to say this: Batman and Robin was probably the worst movie that was mentioned there but we also have to consider that Batman Forever was also really bad and Batman Returns wasn't a good movie either (IMO, anyway). When we look at the bad direction the Batman movies had been headed, it really shouldn't have been a surprise to anyone how after B & R turned out to be. So were we REALLY disappointed? If you're disappointed in something, then that means you once had hope for the project. But no one should have had ANY hope for B & R after seeing Batman Forever.

I really don't think they did; they're just voting for it b/c it was so bad.
I didn't think "Forever" was all that bad, myself. It had some good points, such as the relationship between Bruce & Dick, and the exploration of Bruce's past. But it was, by & large, a toy commercial & we let WB get away with it. We really should've seen where they were going. But between the casting, the villain pairing (Cold kills plants, duh) the trailers & even the title, who over the age of 15 can really say they expected "Batman & Robin" to be a good movie?

Yeah... the minute I found out they had cast Arnold Schwarzeneggar as Freeze, I knew the movie was hopeless. I mean, we've all seen some bad casting decisions, but I can't even fathom WHAT they were thinking other than, "HE'S FAMOUS!! HE MAKES BLOCKBUSTERS!!! PEOPLE LAUGH AT HIS ACCENT!!! CAST HIM!!!" Hell, I'm surprised they didn't cast him as Batman.

Oh, that's right... I forgot. Arnold demands maximum screentime and in those movies, Batman is intended to be a background character. I'm surprised George Clooney wasn't listed in the credits as "Ensemble."

Ah-nuld Already Got Top Billing; What More Do You Want?

Mr. Freeze Is Supposed To Be A Brilliant Scientist & A Tortured Soul. He's The Only Villain In Batman's Whole Rogue Gallery That I Really Consider A Victim. Harvey Can Get A Skin Graft. The Joker Can Wear Makeup. Victor Is Screwed. But They Turned Him Into A Standard Gun-toting Arnold Character, Spewing Bad One-liners & Blasting Everything In Sight (except Batman; Notice He Made No Effort To Ice Him At All?) I Like The Quote In The Wizard Special: Robocop Meets Powder.

Just wondering, Did Arnold demand the top-billing or did WB just give him top-billing because of his career outshadowing everyone else?

I agree.

I like TLW as a movie by itself, but not a sequel after the great Jurassic Park.

Why demand what is automatically yours?
