Popular and/or long-standing characters that you just couldn't get into.

and people who like 616 Thor f***ing hate Ultimate Thor with the burning passion of a million billion suns.
... and me. I hate the Ulti -Thor with the power of the Sentry, but again its whatever floats your boat yay Verily

That seems to be the consensus. People who like Ultimate Thor like him because they could never get into 616 Thor, and people who like 616 Thor f***ing hate Ultimate Thor with the burning passion of a million billion suns.

Or maybe the latter part just applies to me.

No. It doesn't. Thor is a god, not a drunken, long-handled axe-wielding hippie who may or may not be hallucinating, & will lose his powers if you take away his glowing belt.

POWER OF THE SENTRY?!?!

dont get me started on that piece of junk.....
oh no! i was only using that dude as a analogy to how much i dislike Ulti-Thor.I agree with you on the Sentry. That guy sucks big, until someone finally knows how to write him and does something good with him.... Actually i kinda doubt i ever will like Sentry.its gotta be one hell of a story for me to ever like that dude

His first mini-series was good. Ever since then, the Sentry's become more of a running gag than an actual superhero.

I really wanted to like Sentry in the mighty Avengers book, but it never worked.I knew when he was supposed to be Marvel's Superman. That it wasn't going to work. Superman has trouble being Superman since you need Villains more powerful than him, for him to fight.

He can never be writen well. He might be the single STUPIDEST character ever created. He serves no purpose. Whatsoever. At all. Ever.

And I'm not someone who freaks out at retcons. I really have no problem with it, if it's done well. (for instance, I thought the idea of the submariner returning in the 60s after wandering around as a vagrant was brilliant) BUT...the most powerful being ever was forgotten by EVERYONE?!?!

WTF?!?!

Screw the Sentry and anyone who ever had anything to do with his creation. I hate them all and hope they all die.

Sentry is proof that an EMO superman would not work in the Marvel U

ummm Guys i don't like Sentry i agree with you guys he sucks.
However.I do think a EMO Superman can work.Hyperion is a Superman knockoff and i dig his stories. Gladiator is a Superman/ Superboy knockoff and when he shows up,its pretty cool. They are both though nowhere near ,the power level of Sentry or Superman.Being that powerful makes the villains you fight inadequate. A hero is only as good as his villains. Sentry sucks cause they made him so powerful. that they had to make him have Agroaphobia to depower him. How the hell can you be a superhero if you cant go outside.I do think that if someone came along and knew how to maybe write dude. he wouldn't suck so bad, but i am not holding my breath. Acutally i see dude taking a dirt nap eventually.

My opinion of Sentry can be easily guessed with that page from Secret Invasion where he [blackout]flew into space, started crying, and flew back home.[/blackout]

I don't believe for a second that a superhero at Superman or the Sentry's level has any problem with villains. The only problem is that people like Bendis, who made his name with street-level heroes, can't write the uber-powerful guys. That's why the Sentry has agoraphobia and Ares gets treated like a b**** and Iron Man gets EMP'ed and Wonder Man is totally ineffective at everything when Bendis writes them--he has no idea how to balance the powerful characters that an Avengers roster needs with the street-level characters he actually wants to write. Same goes for anyone who can't write Superman or Thor or any other high-power character well. It's a fault with the writers if they're not imaginative enough to come up with credible threats to the big guys, not a fault of the characters.

I'm reminded of something Stan lee said about Supes; that he's a hard character to write b/c he's been around so long, we all feel like we've seen it all when it comes to him. But dare to change anything or shake it up & the fans alll rebel.

Hellboy. Liked the first movie, hated the second, neither prompted me to want to pick up any of his titles.

Like I said, he just never captured my imagination for some reason.

The movies are nothing like the comics.

Okay-is that "nothing like the comics" in the same sense as the X-Men movies, (loaded with arguably minor differences) "nothing like the comics" in the sense of the Blade movies, (drastically altered but the basic premise remaines intact) or "nothing like the comics" in the sense of Halle Berry's Catwoman? (truly NOTHING like the comics)

If by basic premise you mean "Boy from Hell meant to bring forth the Apocalypse" then the second one.

Hellboy is fairytails told in a pulp/noir style - it explores folklaw and regional traditions - the main plot is huge in scope but small in execution. It's a brilliant work.

The movies are big gun punches things with big hand it lacks the imagination and subtlety that Mignola bring to it - not to mention the characters really don't sound like their comic book counterparts.

the characters really don't sound like their comic book counterparts.
That remains subjective; the same argument has been raised about at least one character in every comic book movie ever made.

Hellboy's pretty good in the movies. Abe is totally different. Liz is kind of half-and-half. She'd never date Hellboy in the comics, though. The movies also totally neglect Kate Corrigan, Ben Daimio, Roger the Homunculus, and various other great characters.

Abe and Liz were the ones I was thinking about mostly - it's annoying that they would miss out Roger.

Liz is more like a little sister to Hellboy, not a lover. Abe is just a complete mystery I've no idea where they got the move character from.

Even though it's a common complaint of comic book movies - it doesn't make it any less valid.

It seems like they combined Abe Sapien's physical appearance with the X-Men's Beast because they needed the requisite "science guy" character and they didn't want some random unknown BPRD dude to do it.

Plus they decided to give him telepathy - because you can't have a fish guy without telepathy.

I did think liz & HB hooking up was weird. Especially her pregnancy. You'd think the idea of giving birth to a literal demon seed would be at least a little off-putting. But she took that in stride. Can you imagine what the kids would look like?
