The Dark Knight Returns was important for its time. The reason modern readers may not appreciate it as much is because they've had essentially the perfect Batman in comics for their entire lives. Ever since DKR came out, Batman and his world were darkened until they got close to the level they started out at. Obviously Batman's not as dark in the regular comics as he was in DKR, but he owes whatever grittiness he's managed to reclaim in large part to DKR paving the way for it.
I'm not a huge fan of DKR as a story myself, but if you put it in the context that it originally was released in, it's not hard to see that it had a colossal influence on Batman's image and what other creators were allowed to do with him. Personally, I think Batman: Year One is by far the superior Miller Batman work, but I can appreciate DKR for what it was.
