popular Directors you are really sick of but afraid to admit to.

Michael Mann. I just don't see what the hype is all about.

He has at least 3 films that are masterpieces. I have a whole book on him, what an interesting career hes had.

Miami Vice is his only dissapointing film.

Potter 3 was good, and the little princess was alright, (nothing amazing) which makes me wonder if Children of Men is a bit of a fluke on his part.

Or considering his constantly improving portfolio, the guy might have actually matured as an amazing director.

Children of Men is easily his best film, the things i loved about the gun fights in particular is that they werent intercut with other scenes and they were all filmed like a documentry, it really made it feel real.

What about Y Tu Mama Tambien? Awesome movie by him. He's not overrated at all in my opinion.

Sam Raimi...He's SO Overated.
I hate his filming style and his movies tend to be cheesefest.

Manhunter. Ali. Miami Vice.

So he's had a few bombs (and Manhunter was great  ). That doesn't make him overrated. The fact remains that when it comes to adrenaline pumping shoot-outs and gripping crime-dramas, Mann is the go-to guy in Hollywood.

Peter Jacksons is not overrated he just seems to be hated which boggles my mind. Find me another director who has made three films back to back at once.

I think Polanski, and Scorsese are overrated even though they are popular. I mean one of them can't even come into the U.S can they. That is Polanski. One director i'd like to see make a big come back is Kevin Reynolds. loved his style of films.

Speilberg ain't overrated. He is a director who can appeal to the masses and to the artistic and auteurs (if they aren't snobby). Those who say he killed cinema make me laugh when their idols like Coppola or Truffaut love his films and the latter even was in a cameo in Close Encounters.

Anyway, he deserves his praise and while WOTW and AI weren't up to snuff, he has also made Catch Me If You Can and more importantly Munich this decade. Munich is IMO one of the stand out films of the last 7 years easily and is a throwback to classic (if dated) '70s movie making in every sense of the idea. Minority Report was a good meshing of the film noir and sci-fi as well in what was from a technical stand point, flawlessly done.

An overrated director? Sure, I can name quite a few but I'll start with one that fits these boards, Peter Jackson. The man is a good director. But he is such a self-indulgent egotist. The LOTR movies were great and instant classics but the extended editions for the most part dragged on for his "full vision." And King Kong did not need to be 3 hours. It probably didn't even need to be 2 1/2. The guy has made essientially two genre pics in fantasy (and a few overrated cult films coughFrightnerscough) and yet he SHOULD DIRECT EVERY MOVIE.

Personally I'd like to see him make a movie these days under 3 hours first though.

Whats the name of this book?

Mann is one of my favorite directors.

P.S. SCORCESE IS NOT OVERRATED. I shouldn't even have to defend that one there. That's like saying Hitchcock, Ford, Wells, Capra, etc. are overrated. There are some that should just need explaining though.

wow...I'm surprised no one has chewed me out yet :o

PJ is overated. Time will not be kind to the lotr movies. They are too long and they really drag on second viewings. The only one ive been able to watch more than once is FOTR. Kong showed all of PJ's flaws that were covered in lotr because fans never thought they would see it on the big screen. Every times theres a new sci-fi/fantasy project optioned everyone suggest pj as director. After a few more kongs more people will realize what im talking about.

And michael mann is one of the best directors working in hollywood. He has never made a bad film just dissapointments, how many directors can say that? I hate to judge other peoples tastes, but if you dont atleast respect mann's talent your hopeless.

Tarantino annoys the hell outta me, and I don't really feel Rodriguez's movies either.

Lucas sucks as a director, and Speolberg is the best director around today. FACT.

Stanley Kubrick. Clockwork Orange disgusted me and his other films haven't pleased me either

I so agree with you on Raimi. The men who are the best comis book directors are Deltoro and Chris Nolan. They are great directors. Raimi is ok but has not there talent. Why does everyone love Polanski and Scorcese. The Depated was good but i Think Spielberg and Eastwood are better then them.

I haven't seen a Polanksi film, but I can easily explain why Scorsese is so loved:

-He's made some of the most influential, controversial and analyzed films in cinema. Taxi Driver, when it was first released in 1976 was quite groundbreaking for its time for its subject matter and its depiction of certain "taboo" topics (such as the relationship between Travis and Iris). To this day, film students all over the world still study it intensely, especially its ending.
-His camera work is incredible. Watch the fight scenes in Raging Bull, or the scene in Goodfellas where the camera follows Henry and Karen through the backroom of The Copa, in which the amera work is so increddible you almost feel like you're following them. Those scenes have some of the best cinematography in film history.
-He always draws the best performances out of his actors. Have you ever seen Ray Liotta better than as Henry Hill? Or Joe Pesci as Tommy Devito? Or Sharon Stone as Ginger McKenna? Or Daniel Day Lewis as Bill The Butcher? Or Leo DiCaprio as Billy Costigan? No, you probably haven't. The only exception is the acting powerhouse, that is Robert De Niro, and even when discussing his best roles, it's the Scorsese ones that come up more than any others (Travis Bickle, Jake LaMotta).
-He made the most realistic portrayal of the mob ever, Goodfellas.
-He's one of the best directors in terms of choosing soundtracks for his movies. Listen to the soundtrack on Goodfellas, every song fits every scene perfectly (specifically in the "Layla" montage).

So, Scorsese isn't overrated. At all.

Thanks for the kindly explanation. Polanski is my main beef for didn't he molest a women or underaged person.I think he's the one who can't come into the U.S or be arrested.

I hate people, who think that Spielber, Scorsese or other great directors are overrated

Peter Jackson hands down

yuppers... and i am in no way afraid to admit it.

i loved dead alive (mostly just for being so terribly corny) and the frighteners was okay, but the lord of the rings movies were garbage... boring, boring, overly-long-just-for-the-hell-of it-garbage.

that isn't a good reason to like a director. i could go out and make 3 movies back to back right now... it doesn't mean they'd be any good.
