I have to be honest. its is clearly not easy to portray mutant powers on screen and make it cool. orgins really shows some of the dumbest powers ever.

they've done a decent job with wolverine's claws and magneto's magnetism and other powers.

but i must say that magnetism is now the coolest mutant power. i wish i could move metal. in the animated series and the comic we always saw purple shock waves.

Now magneto is a serious movie character who is a force to be wreckoned with. he has become a cool cinematic sci fi character.

its no so hard to show the powers.

its just that they havent done a good job using them.

I think this will be the first X-Men film to make the mutants actually look POWERFUL. In the previous films they never realyl did a good job of that...everything felt more subdued.

It really depends on who we are talking about here. I think it would be hoaky to see waves or distortions emanating from Xavier's head like in the cartoons and purple waves coming from Mag's hands. However, I think Singer did a good job without going over the top. The only thing I would like to see for each character would be:

An invisible shield that Mag's usually creates in the comics that is only seen when bullets hit the bubble shield he has created.

I would also like to see a bit more creative transition into Xavier's mind reading. In X2 it was just basically a vertical transition. But, I would like to see some Harry Potter effects like in Half Blood Prince where Harry goes into Dumbledore's memories with the pensieve. That was just fantastic.

For Banshee I would like to see distortions in the air as he screams. No circles emitting from his mouth.

From what I remember reading, I think him and
Emma are going to have a battle that should be quite similar to that.

When it comes to using their mutant abilities on film, I've liked what I've seen for the most part, but the budget would have to be much larger if they wanted to have it just like the comics.

I don't mean effects like the waves from Prof. X's head when he's using his telepathy, I'm with Chaseter on that, as well as no rings from Banshee. I'm talking more about how often the powers are used. I still want to see a battle with multiple mutants using their powers in full force, we almost got that with X3, but it was fail in the end.

I think they scrapped that battle. They said it was too much like Inception. There was going to be a fight in the mind with rotating rooms/halls but it got scrapped at the last minute.

That would have been awesome!

There is still going to be a psychic battle between Emma Frost and Xavier .. I hope they will display it visually on the astral plane and not just them staring at each other like Jean vs Xavier in X3 ..

Magneto is the coolest!! I'd love if Vaughan could really can showcase that he can do more then just move metal. Sadly I'm not gonna hold my breath. This is the problem with prequels. They shouldve just rebooted the Xmen. Having it leaning more toward the Ultimate universe would've worked. They can't showcase more aspects of Mags power cause it was never established in the films that he can create force fields, or generate an em pluse, or fire em blasts of energy, or screw with the electrical current in someones brain to kill them. Magneto does and have always had one of the coolest powers in all comics.

Between Emma and Prof X? She isn't a match for Charles at all. I guess since he's younger and now Frost is his peer, she can be a rival. I love Emma but where is the Shadow King. He is telepath that's on Xavier's level.

What??? Cyke's optic blasts were dead on from the comics, Storm creating the tonadoes, Prof X brain freezing the entire mall, Pyro taking out the police, Nightcrawler's attack on the White house, Magneto saving the Blackbird, Mags stopping and ripping the Train in half, Mags breaking Mystique outta the convoy, mags moving the GG Bridge, Jean at her childhood home. I don't think those were weak portrayals of mutant powers.

I will say that I hated that we never saw Magneto create his force bubble and him flying in it.

Am I the only one who thinks Colossus was extremely underutilized in the X-Men films, plus he didn't really even seem that powerful (he just punched people at the end of X3).

I was hoping to see him fight Juggernaut at some point in X3 but instead we got "Wolverine vs Juggernaut" which paled in comparison.

The mutant powers I'm looking for to seeing the most in First Class is Havok's energy beams. I hope he's not down played too much considering he's not really going to be a major character (sigh).

We were all hoping for that fight. The writers even told us that we would see Colossus vs Juggernaut and that it was epic. God I hate them for that. I remember sitting in the movie waiting and waiting for it to happen at the final battle. When the credits rolled everyone just stood up and walked out. Only noises I could hear were people complaining to their friends. NEVER FORGET!

I have a good feeling that this movie won't skip out on the action.

I wouldnt hold my breath. Havoc has been altered. His powers look like Cyclops now and probably function like his as well. D@mn FOX. Havoc's pwers has always been more flexiable then Scott's. Scott fire's beams of concussive force. Havoc can release his energy in as concussive, light or heat as well as absorb energy.

Havoc took down the freaking Hulk. Something I don't think Cyclops could do, well not head to head. Havoc however did. Head to head he took down the Hulk.

I honestly don't really mind Havok's energy being red, I just hope he's portrayed as being pretty powerful in the film. I also want to see him involved in several action/fight scenes throughout the film.

i agree. the first 3 movies kinda failed to portray mutants powers properly. what also bothered me was that magneto was walking most of the time, where as he should be flying. especially with his idea of mutant superiority. also it gives him this look that he is above humans.
singer downplayed their powers to create a so called believable world, but it is a comic book movie and it is allready incredible to have the slightest of mutant powers, so he should have made them the same as in comics.
hopefully vaughn will do better.

Well I see where you're coming from, but i think it's more due to the fact of budget. I understand that things have to be scaled back in a live action movie. You have a ton of characters that all require fx. It's not like Superman, where's he is a solo character. It was easier to pull off in a team fashion in the F4 cause the Human Torch could be all CGI and more cost effective. I think they handled Magneto well enough. I wish they would've explored his powers more on screen, but hey it is what it is.

i think they portrayed mutant powers pretty well in the films. less is definitely more. by making the powers look a little more reality based it provides the films with a big more longevity. think about all those earlier sci fi shows that used all kind of cgi graphics that at the time were cool but when you look back at those shows now look TOTALLY fake.

the way i see it, it's about the quality of cgi. now it's not good to overdo the effects, but in x-men case, imagine if you were a mutant with certain powers. how often would you use them.
now if i could fly, i would not be walking all the time.
also there is no need to tone down the characters for the sake of reality, because it is allready not real to have mutants controlling weather or shooting optic beams.
my point is that you can have and in x-men case we should have a big epic movie with a lot of incredible stuff happening and also having a good story.
if handeled right it can be of the scope of LotR. All the elements are there.

I know that Wikipedia is not always correct, but based on Frost's current portrayal in the comics, I would say that this info is spot on:

The exact level of her telepathic power has varied depending on writers and has ranged from weaker than other prominent telepaths to rivaling the abilities of Charles Xavier himself. She has recently been repeatedly referred to as an "omega-level telepath." She has also been referred to as a "psi of the highest order," been ranked among the five most skilled telepaths on the planet, and has demonstrated the ability to overcome more powerful telepaths, such as Nate Grey, or Rachel Summers, through greater experience and skill.

If there really is a psychic battle between the two, it should be pretty cool.

Annnnnd triple post. My bad.
