Comics Preview for ASM #537

Looking at the captions on the last page, and some spoilers on another message board, I'd say the ripping off of Frank Miller's Daredevil will continue.

http://www.comicboards.com/smb/view.php?trd=070103221410

Wilson Fisk aka The Kingpin, always thought of Spider-Man as HIS No.1 enemy prior to Frank Miller's revamping of the character in the early 80's.

In fact, circa 1978, when Vanessa demands Wilson to get out of crime, or their marriage is over, he finishes up his affairs and then COMMITS his last 12 hours as a crimminal to killing Spider-Man... all of which can be read in the classic ASM #197.

When Miller makes DareDevil the Kingpin's biggest enemy (which was ok by me), Marvel editorial then decides that the Kingpin needs to treat Spider-Man as a "joke", which we've seen many times throughout the 80's and 90's (which is NOT ok by me), because it was insulting to older readers who knew of his past hatred for Spidey.

So if anything, what we see in ASM #537 is refreshing, and true to how the Kingpin once felt about his arachnid foe.

ASM #537 read like a filler issue to me, but the bit with the Kingpin was nice, especially to an older school Spidey reader like myself.

Cheers...

:yay:

So anybody else read this issue? I thought it was pretty good....

The Spidey/Cap talk was excellent.

I thought the issue was awesome. A nice ode to Spidey and Human Torch's history together. Captain America's speech to Peter was a bit corny. The way Spidey was staring at Cap after his speech you would have thought he was in love with him.

True, Cap's speech WAS a bit lengthly. But overall, i thought it was poignant. And i loved how they stared each other down a bit when they first met. (remember; last time, they came to blows).

Im worried about what Marvel might do to MJ and/or Aunt May though. Even though both have been "killed off" before...still...Joe Q LOVES to toss out "Red Herrings" to the fans, which leads me to believe that he might just be yanking our chains with all this death talk, so we'll just have to wait and see, i guess.

Oh I'm well aware of how the Kingpin started of as one of Spider-Man's bitter enemies, considering how have copies of ASM #50-52, and ASM #196-197 :) I'm saying that you couple the hooker selling out Spidey and his familes location AND that the Kingpin hears about it through his contacts, in a similar fashion, although certainly not identical scenario to what happened Daredevil, then the similarity is obvious. And yes, I do appreciate the idea that the Kingpin could be a serious threat to Spidey again, espeically if May or MJ gets serious wounded and on the verge of death at the end of ASM #538, which would make Spidey want to get revenge on the Kingpin big-time.

Just wanna say: kingpin's back ina spider-man book. Woooooooo!

Hey! When did this turn into a "slash" site? :oldrazz:

(Pete probably thot Cap was nuts...he does get carried away with speeches)

I thought the speech hit the spot on what Spider-Man should be thinking a this point. And clarified what a *REAL* Republic stands for and what it is to stay true to your convictions and govern your own actions. But the burning question is, when the heck are they going to slay the Dragaon tis' the Invicible Iron Man... And I'm seriously hoping they don't kill off MJ, she's a comic icon!

It wasn't a bad issue by any means. I just wish that the continuity were a little better in these Civil War tie in's. It was easy to tell that this issue was right before Civil War # 6 but what the hell is up with Peter Parker suddenly being Wolverine? I mean he was knocking at death's door at the end of Civil War # 5 and the same over in Sensational Spider-Man from an attack by Rhino. I'm pretty disappointed in the continuity of the last parts in Civil War. It started out all right but then dropped off pretty badly.

I think the most interesting part of the entire book was Kingpin and the hit that he put out. The last page is definitely a "Holy shinsplint" moment just waiting to happen and also leave a whole bunch of unhappy Spider-Man fans MORE unhappy...if that is even possible.

I just don't like the way spider-man is always looking up to other heroes. Spider-Man has as much experience being a hero as Iron-Man and Capt America, even moreso if you ask me. He doesn't need to look up any other hero, maybe he can ask for advise once in a while, but he doesn't ****in need stark or rodgers talking to him like he's a child.

they might as well just change the name of amazing to ultimate, because he fights like a child, talks like a child and behaves like a child, even looks like a child sometimes thanks to romita jr. it's sickening watching myself mature as a reader and having peter getting more immature as a hero and a person.

maybe after they kill off his loving young wife, because lord knows peter hasn't been through enough pain in his life, and keep his old as hell aunt alive, they can bring back uncle ben, and both of them can change his diapers, when captain america whoops his ass again.

Can you say whipped? When is Peter going to become a man and stop following Stark and Cap like a puppy dog? Just by the way both Cap and Spiderman are drawn in the panels shows alot. Even though Peter is way stronger than Captain America, Cap looks like a freakin tank while Spidey looks like a 90 pound weakling who gets sand kicked in his face.

AMEN!! The continuity on these tie-ins in HORRIBLE! I read the book in the shop, and read Civil War #5, 6, and the past 2 issues of SSM when I got home, and I have NO clue how the hell Peter managed to recover from 2 horrific beatdowns and STILL be able to just swing around and share war-stories with Cap. Come on...

I can already tell that I'm just going to have to anjoy CW as a mini all its own, and ignore all the tie-ins, as they make no sense in the context of the story. SSM, I can handle. They've covered their asses simply because Cap looks at Peter in CW and tells him he can sit this one out, as he's still recovering. This could mean from the CW5 beatdown, or the Rhino-beatdown. Either one works. The rest....who knows?

As for the last page of ASM....I'm still voting for all this being more misdirection.

The way I read it, Pete suffers from his first beating between the pages of ASM #536 & CW #5, and is shown recovering in CW #6.

After thsi recovery, he goes to MJ & May (as seen in ASM #536 & 537). In ASM #537, Cap's Secret Avengers look for Pete because they need all the help they can get. This is where Pete finds himself in CW #6, ready for the final battle in which Cap gives him a way out due to his first beating.

Events in ASM #538 will no doubt occur while Pete's fighting in CW #7, and the end of this issue will probably be after CW #7 is finished.

The timelines in FSN can be fitted in a Pro-Peter and Anti-Peter time frame.

However, I would like to think that the Rhino beating occurs AFTER Civil War #7... because the staus quo is apparantly going to change, and Peter will still be on the run. He mentions in the last issue of SSM that he shouldn't have fought the Rhino while he was still recovering from his wounds (which could be in reference to his first beating, his fights with Iron Man, and the big hullabullaloo in CW #7).

The only thing that will screw up this continuity is if indeed something occurs to either May and/or MJ in ASM #538.

If so, then that means the Rhino beat him before his meeting with Cap while he was still recovering from the first beating. It's a bit unreal, but we've seen Peter beaten down pretty badly before but recover nicely after a day's rest (let's all thank that Spider-Strength).

That's how it works for me thus far, but who knows...

This is up there with that whole Peter looking for a father figure angle they were pulling with Iron Man. I mean he's a 30 (just about) year old man.

Ok... wow... run that by me again... maybe with a pictorial diagram?:cwink:

Agreed. While Pete might admire Cap's speech, he was acting REALLY silly...and now we're back to the 'spindly 70lb freak' spidey for some odd reason...panel by panel he got smaller and smaller. I thought he needed a box to stand on just to talk to everyone! Huge head, pencil thin neck that looks like it should break...legs smaller than his wrists...cripes, what the f*** happened in ONE issue?! Even the Falcon looked like a tank next to Spidey!

The continuity has been a bit confusing through out the whole Civil War storyline especially concerning Spider-man. Besides that, I really enjoyed the issue and the last page was a pretty big shock. If it does go through I'd be extremely pissed. Honestly I don't think it will though.

At least....I hope not.

I think it's possible to argue that we don't know how much time has passed between CW #5 and #6. Who knows? Could've been two months.

Now, granted, the writers really should've been more on the ball in making it more clear what happens when, but...if writers were perfect, there'd be no need for fanwanking.

I dunno. I'm sure there's some way to construct a halfway decent timeline.

Aloha,
You still got it kid. Great insight:up: .Continuity is no longer based solely upon complete issues. Even in Untold Tales and Amazing there are cases where continuity is based upon a few pages of one book and then another issue altogether. Civil War and Frontline along with Spidey make up a great base to get the Civil War story.
