Ps5 vs. Series X/S: Which next gen system are you leaning more towards?

Which next gen console are you leaning more towards purchasing?

Well then they just have to come out with some amazing exclusive games to convince me. I bought the Xbox360 instead of the PS3 because it had games like Dead Rising and Gears of War. If it's a situation like that again, I will certainly consider the new Xbox (unless it's very expensive)
Some people seem to think the Series X will be $599, I think that's completely crazy. At most I think it'll be $499 but I think it's even possible for it to be $399. mS would be selling it at a loss but they have pockets deep enough to take a loss in order to get the hardware into people's homes.

The console will have exclusives but most if not all of them seem like they will be console exclusive, which means exclusive to the Series X and the Xbox family not necessarily other console platforms, BUT could still (very likely) appear on PC.
Sony can get millions of people in the palm of their hands just by releasing a logo. Pretty bg
Wait till the actual console is unveiled...

I'm pretty sure all Xbox exclusive games going forward will also be on PC.

You're right. I actually didn't notice this until I looked up Halo Infinite, which is the game to own on Series X, and it is indeed coming to PC. If the next Halo is coming to PC, then I feel like ANY exclusive to Series X will also be coming to PC

Is Sony dropping out of E3 again this year? MS needs to have a spectacular showing as it may be break or make for a lot of people going next gen early. Seems all Sony needs to do is reveal a good launch price and a big exclusive or two

Yes they are. mS is definitely going to take full advantage of that.

That poll above is interesting. Nearly 70% are saying an affordable price and backward compatibility are most important.

Its about the exclusive games. Even if one is more expensive you are likely only going to see like 100 difference and considering its something i am going to play a lot for several years 100 is really like nothing. There is no way xbox will only be 399 no way it will be at least 450 and likely 500. The whole 400 we need to get away from. Systems cant stay 400 forever and really video games are the only thing that have not went up in price. There are a lot of other reasons ps3 got off to a slow start besides just price. Xbox 360 comming out a year earlier and multiplatform games having a lot if issues the first like 2 years before they figured out the cell and how to better make games for the system had a lot to do with ps3 slow start to.

Honestly man I can't see how the names Series X is attractive. Why do you like it?

It's just another confusing name. The "Xbox" brand itself is a series, that is, it is a series of consoles. The series includes the Xbox, Xbox 360, Xbox One, and the upcoming Xbox Series X. I was saying on the previous page that, to me, naming the console "Series X" makes me feel like in the next generation of Xbox, there will be different console versions to choose from - just like how in this generation, there were versions to choose from; Xbone, Xbone S, and Xbone X. One could call this the Xbone series of consoles just like the Xbox brand is a series, and that makes sense, but naming the next console itself with Series in the name adds confusion.

This is because, let's say the rumored Lockhart is real. It's not going to have Xbox Series X in the name at all, it'll probably be Xbox Series S or something. So what exactly makes the Series X a "series"? It's just one console, unless the Lockhart version is called Xbox Series X Lite but I don't think it will.

This gen the Xbone was a stupid name because there already was an Xbox one, and next gen (in my opinion) Series X is a stupid name because it is a console that is part of a series, the console itself is not a series that doesn't make sense at all. mS stopped thinking of sensible names after the 360.

If you were to ask me last year or two years ago, I would have been leaning towards next gen Xbox because I was really annoyed with how Sony was handling crossplay. But I voted Ps5 in the poll.

mS could potentially be boasting these numbers since casuals (kinda like me) can't read into it and need those more knowledgable to break down what they mean. Right now Series X on paper is perceived to be a powerhouse, and all we've heard about Ps5 are rumors both about it being weaker and stronger than the spec sheet we have for its competition.

And yeah as you said, dev kits never look like the finished product. The only one that bared a resemblance was the Ps2, which still did get an overhaul in the end.

I don't think either Sony or mS will have much luck in securing 3rd party exclusives. With the Yakuza games now on Xbone and the Digimon Story games on Switch, 3rd party exclusivity has really become a thing of the past.

As for FFS7R though, I heard that its development is a case similar to SV5, where the game could eventually come out on PC but not any other consoles outside of the playstation family.

I can 100% guarantee you that you that there will be nothing remotely close to an RROD problem for the Series X. There hasn't been for the Xbone either, I don't think. It's known to be the quietest console.
Interestingly enough, on a Twitter poll of over 50,000 votes, only 13% of gamers voted that exclusive games is what matters most

PS5 and Xbox Series X users want one key thing more than cutting-edge graphics | Tom's Guide
But I was also referring to sequels to games that were only released in Playstation. If a sequel is to be released for God of War, Horizon Zero Dawn, Spider-Man 2018, Uncharted - it would be for sure going to be ps exclusives as the company behind those games are owned by Sony. Also Ghosts of Tsushima and Last of us 2 are in my wait list, and would be the first few games I'd played in ps5 as the price of those games would have been cut in half by next year and they are only playable through ps4 and ps5 (assuming ps5 has bc with ps4 games).

I was watching videos featuring games exclusive for ps4 and xbox. And there was like only one that I would consider buying if I had an xbox (Sunset Overdrive and maybe Gears of War). While ps4 have so many exclusives that I wanted to play and ended up buying it. And I didn't realize something like Street Fighter V is a ps4 exclusive as well.

To me the price isnt that important, im expecting to pay 500€ for the thing and im okay with that.
I use my ps4 every day, i watch blu-ray on it, netflix and so on...if i buy a pc or tv i pay more for less.
Of course i dont want to pay 800€ or so for a console, but 500€ is a price i expect and am willing to pay.
But a cheaper console would be nice...as long as it doesnt mean less power.

Backwards compatiblity is important, i cant tell you how often i would love to play a ps3 game but i dont because im too lazy to grab my stored away ps3.
So that would be really neat.

As it stands the ps5 is a sure buy for me, despite not having any real infos.
Im a gamer, specificly a playstation gamer.
Sure im looking at the xbox with interest at the moment, but it would need a wonder for me to become a xbox gamer.
We will see, i hope sony reveals the ps5 soon.

PS5 almost certainly will not have PS3 backwards compatibility; the GPU architectures are too different and it would cost too much to engineer a workaround. PS4/Pro is guaranteed, though, and PS1 & PS2 is unlikely but theoretically possible.

Yeah, same for me. This is something that will last years and be used every day and the price difference could be the equivalent of a couple of new games.

BC is crucial for me and I hope in future all the consoles have full BC. You would then need only the 3 latest ones along with pc to have access to everything!

The names of the consoles doesn't really matter. Gamers know which is which and I refer to them as just Nintendo, Playstation and Xbox most of the time . Although, I admit to liking seeing Playstation being simple with numbers than reading Xbox One on logos and my tv screen.

Xbox Series X on screen would at least be better than One

I know you were also referring to sequels to exclusives, but those sequels nonetheless are more exclusive games. I was just pointing out how in one particular poll, exclusive games are voted to be the least of gamers' concerns in purchasing a video game console.

To me neither the design nor the name of the product matter all that much, but they do to an extent. The V-shape that the Ps5 devkit has, some people say it'll be a turnoff if the actual console looks like that. But the thing is, you don't even look at it when you play the game. Only when you stick a disc inside of it. So really it should not matter that much what it looks like.

Same with the name. What matters is what it can do, not what it's called. But for the sake of the looks and names of the consoles, if I were to have an opinion on it, it's that the name Xbox Series X is stupid, just like Xbox One is.

I'm digital and my xbox is behind the side of a couch. So the design is the least of my concerns. The PS5 prototype that I saw if accurate is very interesting though and very futuristic/high tech.

You can't really expect the final product to look like that though. And that's the thing. Hate it or love, dev kits never really resemble the retail design. But yeah like you said, the design is the least of your concerns and to me it should be the case for everyone when deciding what hardware to buy. Whether it looks pretty to you or ugly to you, its functionality will be the same in the end.

if I'm going to be spending $400+ on a piece of tech, I want the design and look of it to be something I consider reasonably attractive and that goes with other devices in my house. it may not be a deciding factor, but it is a factor for me.

I'd appreciate a nice looking form factor myself, and if everything else was identical (games, services, etc.) it might be the deciding factor. But even if the PS5 looks like a piece of hardware from the '90s I'd still take it over the Xbox due to the exclusives and my current library of PS titles.

There's also a difference mindset/sensibility between the two companies. Microsoft seems to appeal to dudebro types, like their licensing deals with Mountain Dew & Doritos and their focus on shooters and multiplayer. Whereas with Sony's more global market they try to appeal to as many customers as possible by providing a wider range of products. Niche vs eclectic. Part of Microsoft's strategy with their studio purchases seems to be to address these shortcomings, but I'm afraid with Game Pass they're going more for the Netflix model (quantity over quality) along with games as a service.

I really don't care too much about the appearance. I'm going to be playing games on it, not staring at it. Although form is a little important. If it is too big, bulky or otherwise awkward it might make finding a place in my entertainment center more difficult.

My tin foil hat theory has always been that Microsoft is trying to gradually wean people off of their hardware and get them gaming on windows 10. Given their push towards cloud gaming and pc, I think they care more about that than me playing on Series X.

I think they just gave up on trying to compete with Sony internationally and instead are leaning into what they already have. I don't think Game Pass will lead to many quality game in the long run but it should make them money for the moment. It certainly feels like Xbox is now a gateway drug for PC.

MS does seem focused on entertainment in general and making their consoles PC Lite/Ports with their games mostly centered around 3rd parties and indies with just a couple of big exclusive IP's while Sony's game division is still all about gaming and exclusives with apps/features being bonuses.

Not sure what to think about that. I'm a casual player and use my xbox for more than just gaming but then without Playstation, I feel I'm missing out on a lot of games that interests me and overall Sony just seems like the one with a better direction.

That's why I plan on eventually getting both but then again, having just one console has been fine. Already..

this is how I feel and why Playstation still has the edge for me. Also, I still don't fully "trust" the direction Xbox is going. It wouldn't surprise me if they eventually decided to switch to an all digital Netflix like model with Game Pass and X Cloud.

I feel that if I only owned an Xbox, I would be missing out on too many games that interest me. Just this year alone, I would be missing out on FF VII Remake, Persona 5 Royal, Granblue Fantasy Versus, and possibly Ghost of Tsushima. I'm not super interested in Last of Us 2, but that's obviously going to be another huge game for Playstation.

Conversely, if I just owned a Playstation, I don't feel like I would be missing out on that many Xbox exclusives. Sure, that could change once we get Fable, Killer Instinct 2, and whatever else the Xbox Studios are working on. But that stuff is going to be some years off, unless there are some unannounced launch surprises.

And, with 1st party Xbox exclusives also going to PC, now that I own a gaming capable laptop, technically I don't even need to own an Xbox to enjoy the occasional Xbox exclusive that might interest me.

That's why for now and in the foreseeable future, if I could only own one new console, it would be the PS5. I don't see that changing unless there's some massive power difference between the 2 or the Series X is getting some awesome exclusive that I'd consider must own.

I just hope that if I do choose PS5, MS doesn't get a lot of exclusive content this new gen like PS4 does

I'm sure MS will be getting more exclusives next gen; don't think they want to repeat the mistakes they made this gen. Next gen will probably be a lot more competitive. And that should be a good thing for both companies.

They better with all those studios they bought.
