Public Misconceptions about Watchmen...

I'm tempted to pick up a comic sometimes, especially classics like Batman: Year One and TLH. I've also seriously pondered reading the No Man's Land and Gotham Confidential series because they sound really interesting.
read them. do No Man's Land first. thats really good , best thing i took away from reading that-- a newfound respect for the Batgirl mantle in the persona of Cassandra Cain.

But aren't you at least interested where it really happens? I can understand you liking the films, that's fine, but aren't you at least curious? Plus, wouldn't it enrich talking about Batman more if you like him so much.
When it comes to mainstream comic characters such as Batman, getting into the comics is a waste of time, because continuities are constantly destroyed or rewritten, quality goes up and down like a yoyo and there is no pay-off.

The comic industry is awful. Characters should end with their creators.

People, especially young dudes, have a massive issue with full frontal male nudity in movies. They can't handle it, so they need to react to it with repulsion and ****.

And.....Burger King tie-in? I think that might be workable.

NOW, WATCHMEN ARE ARRIVING AT BK!!!!

Clueless dad: Look at me, I'm Rorschach!

Kid: Look at me, I'm Dr. Manhattan!!
*kid grows to enormous size, and obliterates Dad*

Announcer: Now, you can collect all 6 Watchmen figures in every BK Kids Meal....Silk Spectre, Nite Owl complete with Owl-Ship, Dr. Manhattan with detachable penis, and more! Club BK, where taste rules!!!

Monthlies you mean. They are crap nowadays. I'm talking about the essentials.

Read TLH, TDKR, TKJ, B:YO, for starters.

I know it would enrich my Batman discussions, but I just haven't really been able to work up the energy to do it.

In regards to Pyro's coworker: she may just be a casual fan so the cartoons and movies would really be sufficient for her. It's easy to forget when you're surrounded by nerds that some people don't care if they know everything there is to know about Bats. :yay:

Yes, all those are excellent. It woulnd't hurt reading them, but whenever you can, read them, you'll appreciate the character alot more towards the comics, and what Nolan did with the character on film. You'll love TDK more if you've read the comics.

Okay, so, there's this team of superheroes called, uh, the Watchmen. And in the '50's the group breaks up, uh, and they lose their superpowers. The Blue guy was the leader and now he's trying to, uh, get them back together because Vietnam is happening. They all say "No" but then that old guy is thrown out a window so then they say, "Okay" because that was their friend. Now they have only a few hours to find the murderer because of that clock and Dick Nixon is probably behind it, I don't know.

.
:lmao:
I would read that.

I've read all of those. Its funny to notice that all of Batman's best stories are self-contained, with a distinct beginning and end.

Hey guys, love the idea of this topic, and since the original trailer for watchmen was what made me go out, buy the graphic novel, read it about 5 times over, and love it, I would like to share my story of my own misconception from the first trailer. Upon seing the very begining, were Jon is about to become Dr. Manhatten, I thought that that was Dr. Manhatten (or as I called him, the big blue dude) killing this guy. I also originally thought that Nite Owl 2, Silk Spectre 2, and Veidt were the heroes, and thought that rorschach and jon were the villains. From what I thought, the commedian got murdered by rorschach, so the other 3 were after him, and then Jon was trying to destroy the world using his giant castle fortress deal, that I thought was a giant planet killer. Now after reading the book, I found out just how wrong I was, and just how stupid my predictions were. However, upon reading the GN, I began to notice what, in my opionion, will be the downfall of this movie. The plot is way to complex and huge that trying to put it into a movie is going to be an epic fail. Mayble I'll be wrong, but I think that to the average viewer, this movie won't be TDK.

Oh Christ...

Even a stripped down WATCHMEN would better TDK in terms of story, themes, etc.

Wow it's kind of amazing how misleading the trailers can be for people who have no idea.

I don't think the Morrison stuff in the Batman comics was crap at all. That was pretty recent. Oh and I find The Long Halloween to a bit overrated...Comics have their up and downs like everything.

I don't know, I could be wrong but I don't think Watchmen is gonna be a big success at the theaters. Don't get me wrong, I enjoy the GN very much and can't wait until this movie is released, but I think Watchmen is gonna fall under the "Blade Runner" catagory in that the story is so complex and character driven that moviegoers aren't gonna be flocking to the theater during the subsequent weeks of the release due to possibly "bad" word of mouth from the people (who never read the comic) who saw it opening weekend. However, like "Blade Runner", it'll probably develop a large, strong following on DVD/Blu-Ray.

Thats more or less what I was thinking too, but then I considered that the Dark Knight was much the same. Character driven drama with action, much like Watchmen seems to be turning out to be. I think the Dark Knight had attracted a "smarter" or perhaps, a discerning audience that Watchmen may share in.

As much as I would like to believe that, you have to remember that Batman is already a widely known character not to mention TDK had one of the most talked about performances in a long ass time.

Not a big fan of Morrison. Arkham Asylum is good but it is overrated. I get Joker trying to mess with Batman, but thank God Morrison didn't go all the way and make Joker a full blown transsexuel, though he still had the heels and slapped Batman on the ass.

Yeah, I'm not a fan of crazy reptilian tongue Joker or anything like that. But I do love Morrison's work....Can't wait for his return to the monthly series.

Not to mention the BIGGEST difference: TDK was PG-13; Watchmen is R-rated.

How can you be considered a fan of Batman if you don't read the comics? I can see being a fan of the fims, but claiming your a fan by watching the films and not actually reading where it is from originally it came from is odd. Just her saying they're ripping it off and not knowing from the comics is stupid. It makes you seem like a poser.

It's like liking a football team and not watching them.

Here's what you do, sneek a copy of one of the Batman comics on her desk. If she doesn't read it throw it back in her face. :woot:

People don't go to the source material of every. single. thing. they like that happens to be based on something else. It just doesn't cross most people's minds. And it's fine.

I'm sure you know some James Bond fans. Do you also know any Ian Fleming fans? I'd wager not. But would you think twice about the fact that most 007 fans may have never so much as laid eyes on a 007 novel? Or, how many people have actually read the The Godfather by Mario Puzo? Etc., etc.

(And... you can totally like a football team without actually watching them. That's perfectly fine. Maybe not love them, but like them, sure.)

You make a good point about Bond.

But I hate it when people love the films and they dismiss the comics, where they originally came form in the first place as stupid or geeky. Well that's the film, it took everything from it's source material. So you're saying TDK is stupid.

I can accept when people like the films, but when they don't respect it in the first place and love the films to me, that's poser.

Most guys are into all comic book characters. We all are fans of DC, Marvel, etc. But when someone is obsessively a fan, or they start to pinpoint all the little stats and issues and personal traits and plotlines, then the average joe is like...."wut."

Well, the way I see it is that a character like Batman transcends media. He started out as a comics character, sure, but he is equally fascinating and enjoyable as a tv character, film character, video game character, etc. People don't necessarily enjoy all of those media. Some people just don't feel like sitting down, holding some oversized book or magazine in their hands, flipping pages, reading speech bubbles, dealing with sometimes-confusing layouts, seeing onomatopoeic noises like "BAM" and "KRRANG" written on the page, etc. Not that they don't tell good stories, but the format just doesn't appeal to some people.

People don't read comic books probably think something like "Well, I guess it's cool that Batman came from comics. But I happen not to like comics, just in general, so I'm glad they started making movies and tv shows about him, otherwise I never would have discovered him."

But I do see your point.

Though I had a different point I do see yours. I just don't like posers. Besides, they'll move onto the next big thing anyway. They don't really stay with it., they'll watch it, but it's kinda a fad. First it was SM now it's TDK.

One misconception that I was majoryly pissed off at was when I saw this preview on tv, I think it was on a kids television show and they were ripping the costumes.

They honestly thought this movie was based on something from space(!) and not based over decades with an actual story to it, hell they didn't even acknowledge the GN!!!
