Public Misconceptions about Watchmen...

one misconception that i was majoryly pissed off at was when i saw this preview on tv, i think it was on a kids television show and they were ripping the costumes.

They honestly thought this movie was based on something from space(!) and not based over decades with an actual story to it, hell they didn't even acknowledge the gn!!!

oh em gee!! Not everyone is a comic book fan!! Some people aren't even aware that comic books are still being made!!!1

the end is nigh!!1!1

well i became a real comic book fan after reading Watchmen becuase i watched the trailers

True.

But then you would think that any self respecting person would have the sense to do some research, not sit with a bunch of kids and verbally knock a well anticipated movie.

When it comes to mainstream comic characters such as Batman, getting into the comics is a waste of time, because continuities are constantly destroyed or rewritten, quality goes up and there is no pay-off.

That's the same with all entertainment media.

The payoff depends on whose making it. Rucka's WW has a good payoff in story lines IMO. He's not alone in being able to do that with comics.

The comic industry is awful. Characters should end with their creators.

Like tv shows, cartoons or movie franchises? :hehe:

My friend Matt and I had this conversation a few days back. I let him borrow my GN. Didn't seem to get to it yet. But our conversation went something like this:

Matt: You know, the trailer says it the most celebrated GN of all time, but I've never even heard of it.
Me:That's because you're not really into comics.
Matt: Well excuse me if i don't sit around and read them all day. I have things to do.
Me: And I don't? When I have free time I read a bit instead of spending countless hours on the internets.
Matt: Whatever. It probably won't be better than TDK.
Me: We'll see. Do you know what it's even about?
Matt: Yeah.
Me: What's it about?
Matt: Okay, so, there's this team of superheroes called, uh, the Watchmen. And in the '50's the group breaks up, uh, and they lose their superpowers. The Blue guy was the leader and now he's trying to, uh, get them back together because Vietnam is happening. They all say "No" but then that old guy is thrown out a window so then they say, "Okay" because that was their friend. Now they have only a few hours to find the murderer because of that clock and Dick Nixon is probably behind it, I don't know.

Me: You and me are done....professionally.

dude does your friend have short attention span? cause i have a friend that i lent my copy to and he could remember what it was about, and he could name any detail that i asked and he got it right. and that isnt just because he loves comics himself.

Its not the same, because those things stop once people lose interest, or in some cases, get rejuvenated when the quality goes down. The comics industry thrives on fans who will buy each issue no matter what. Its a stagnant industry.

This may upset a few of you guys but when I bring up the film with my friends this is what they end up saying,

"Oh, you mean that movie with the wannabe Batman and Silver Surfer looking dude?"

:hehe:

Wow...last night. This guy who I dont ever know kept asking me "Whos the guy playing The Comedian? Thats Robert Downey Jr right" and I actually did wispher "No" he didnt believe me until the end credits.

To be fair, Morgan does look an awful lot like Downey, Jr. In fact, Jeffrey Dean Morgan looks like the love child of Downey and Javier Bardem.

lol.
My Uncle actually asked me as well "Isnt that the guy from No Country for old men?"

Haha my roomate thought he was RDJ until I set him straight today. Then he realized he was the "guy from Grey's Anatomy." :D

I've got friends who are on both sides of the fence. I have idiot friends who are your usual straightahead action types that are looking at this film going "really? This is soo gay. Why would they make a movie that looks that dumb". And then I have friends that saw the trailer and are hyped for it and borrowed my Watchmen and have read up on it and embraced it. I honestly don't believe alot of the movie going public knows what they're getting with Watchmen. G4 did a special about it last wednesday that might illuminate some minds, but I think it's mostly Watchmen fans watching that program

With whats going on the in the world - chaos in mexico spilling over into US, iran/russian, economic disaster, political unrest, etc the timing for thie movie couldnt be more prefect.

To be honest, I read the graphic novel myself for the first time not long ago. One of my friends got me into it, and then we got another friend into it, and then a couple more. I never thought it would be stupid, in fact I was intrigued by the first trailer I saw with The Dark Knight, and as I huge comic fan, I was surprised that I really hadn't heard much of it, despite reading that it had such critical acclaim. I'm definetely going to a midnight showing with all my friends to see it.

As for public misconceptions, I've heard many that have been said here, including Dr. Manhattan is the villian, that Nite Owl is Batman, and that people think someone is blowing up cities and the superheroes have to find out who and why. Where they got that last one, I have no idea.
MY only concerns beyond the usual theater goers and their tendencies to interrupt movies in various ways, is that I'm going to the midnight showing, which usually draws mainly fans of the source material, so less worry of the previously stated, but then there is also the, excuse the pun, night owl crowd, who are usually between 14 and 17 and go to midnight showings just because "OMG LOLZ We R aT teh Midnight showingz!" and usual serve as nothing more than to piss everyone in the theater off more than normal.

Ive heard the standard "it looks gay" "that big blue guy is shredded" type stuff

i bought the gn after seeing the trailer. I thought it was gonna be some wierd justice league type of stuff.

I hear the "It looks Ghey" comment on everything in theaters. But that comment as become the new Beavis & Butthead-sh comment for dumb-a$$es who can't formulate an objective opinion.

Idiocracy is coming true day after day.

The ignorance about this film kinda bothers me. In this day and age, it's so damn easy to find information on anything. But people still blurt out stupid comments on anything they can't wrap their brain around.

I was talking to someone today who thought he was Clive Owen. I told her, "No, it's Denny!" (his character on Grey's) and she immediately knew who I was talking about. But then I added "He's nothing like Denny in this..."
