I think Quesada said he thought Quasar was a "broken" character that needed to be taken back to the drawing board and remade. I don't get why but Quesada said that because Quasar didn't have a "killer instinct" he was effectively worthless.

JQ: As a cast member.

Why it worked/didn’t work in the past:

JQ: Well, Quasar ran for about for about 5 years but it was never a huge seller. I would argue that there were always problems with this character. A cool look obviously derived from Captain Marvel, but I never felt there was much to hold onto with the character.

Arguably, his origin adheres to the Marvel formula in manner so calculated that it’s transparent. He’s a Peter Parker archetype with cosmic powers and the lack of a killer instinct is what made him compatible with his cosmic band doohickeys. I don’t know something about a hero without a killer instinct. Having a killer instinct doesn’t mean you act upon it, it just means that you want to win at all costs.

Captain America has a killer instinct, great athletes have a killer instinct, Wendell couldn’t cut it with S.H.I.E.L.D. so they make him a guy who stands by guarding a door? Sorry, I was never ever able to buy into the whole Quasar thing.

What it would need to work today?

JQ: Find someone new to be Quasar and start from scratch.

That was the interview that got me to read old Quasar stuff.

Joey Q has no business sense. He's idea of marketing seems to be "piss off the fans until they buy more." Which isn't exactly the best way to gain new readers.

Nonetheless, Marvel is still a top seller, sales have hardly dropped to my knowledge, even though most changes are not well-recieved in the internet community. Either way you put it, Joey Q has still kept Marvel at the top of the heap. One could point to DC coming closer and closer, but the question is whether that is the result of Joey Q, the 'improvement' of DC or both?

In other words, I don't think Joey Q is a total ****** when it comes to his business sense, but they need to get his ass out of the creative process.

I just dont ascribe to the philosophy that a character can be "broken" .

people have experiences that can make them grow OR degrade..all Quasar need was a brutal "intergalactic" war in which he needed to make grim realizations about his philosophys...

and that line about Captain America is ridiculous. He doesnt want to win at all costs ..and this is NOT a sole determinate of a characters merit.

Q-man screwed again? Why not? He was made uneccesary in his own series anyway. The 'special' guy that had NO distinguishing characteristics, other than being nice. He wasn't an especially good shield agent, just ordinary. His best asset was 'lack of a killer instinct'. None of the heavy hitters he went against took him seriously. He was never set up to succeed past the original series. For a guy with such a high title he was too ordinary. Sometimes you can overdo a concept. He was basically built to be a lame duck hero. So as time went on you kinda shrugged, saying "gee, I like this guy but who cares? He's nothing, really."

And then everything was about the 'bands' as he would so childishly explain to everyone all the time (geez, guys, lookit, my bands do this!)

I have every issue of the old Quasar series. The only reason I kept reading was because of the great relationships he had with his friends (Makkari, Kismet,Moondragon, Kayla, and his other buddy). But outside of that he was pedestrian, and a product of gimmicky trinkets. Whenever he DID get a legit power or upgrade, it was immediately taken away (cosmic awareness, starbrand) so he became pretty pointless in his own series. I was disappointed, because the character had so much to develop. But he was more bland than vanilla, more ordinary than bread. Abstract entities regarded him as special, but there was nothing special about him (being a nice guy isn't special). There has to be some reason, some real qualities that make him entitled to protect a friggin universe. Otherwise just appoint TC the local drunk to do it.

And technically, he's Infinity's "son". This should have been explored more, along with his relationship with 'Eppy'.

The only thing you could say about Wendell was that he valued life. Again that's nice, but nothing to hang your hat on. I suspect the last group of writers just gave up trying to give him ANY distinguishing characteristics, and just left the guy to dangle in Q-space. Even when Moondragon was chasing him he was goofing over Kayla, who had NO personality at all. Nada. Zilch. When Kismet chased him, he regarded her as only a groupie. No indication he was attracted to any women besides Kayla (and even she wondered if he was gay, he was so iced out and hanging around Makkari). So yeah, he loved a complete and nothing airhead in Kayla, and had no interest in any women who cared about more than lipstick and dresses. Cripes. So the 'nothing' woman was the love of his life, and the real women were nothings. Go figure.

Anyway, that's my rant. If they DO bring him back, he should be formidable and respected, not some geek stumbling along with a flashy title. I never preferred 'superheroes' that were just products of toys and trinkets.

Pretty much everything you noted (besides the Kayla thing, I agree on that) was exactly what made me like Quasar. He wasn't your average superhero. When most would've used their brawn, he used his brain (such as with the Watcher suicides). Because he was an average man, he made a perfect superhero and Protector of the Universe.
