...so it's happened to me at least 3 times. I have gotten games, put them in the system, and they scratch immediately. it's not an ordinary scratch either. it goes around the disc in a perfect circle. Could it be because I start playing right after I finish watching a movie, and the console is hot? help please!

P.S. my 360 lies horizontally. :cwink:

I've never had any issues with disc scratching, but I don't use my xbox for a dvd player though. Also, my system is vertical.

I don't remember why it happens, but this was a problem people were reporting awhile ago. Do some google searches, I'm sure you'll find something. The perfect circle is what everyone had in common.

My 360 lies horizontal and I have never had a scratched disc.

The only time I got a disc scratched was when my 360 was accidentally bumped. 3 bucks to resurface and nothing since.

As to why discs get scratched, bumping the 360 or changing position while it's reading a disc will guarantee a scratched disc.

:( they all say that it was because I bumped into it but there was no such action. Oh well, the world may never know. It was a rental anyway :p

With the new Xbox Live Experience, if you get disc read errors, you can copy the game to your hard drive and it will play with no problems (you still have to keep the disc in the drive). My friend and I had to do that with Gears 2 one night cause it kept stopping when we were in the middle of online games.

say if you have the scratced disk, and you can't even get it to play online and you rent the same game and d/l to your HD, then you put the scratched disk back in will it read it and play normally?

wait...so you can basically keep a game on your hd? even if you rent it?

I was actually going to make a thread about this, tho it's not the biggest of deals, but since this thread talks about disk scratching it'll fit in here just fine. Apparently someone took MS to court over this (and wanted some ungodly sum ($50,000) they don't deserve for this particular problem), and apparently a MS suit admitted to knowing about this problem before the 360 ever shipped.

I'll post the link to this at the end, but from what I read, it seems that it scratches if you move the 360 while the disk is spinning. So if you have it verticle and move it horizontal mid game, you could scratch it. MS not only knew this, but had 3 plans to fix it which they never implemented. One of which would only have cost them 50 cents per machine.

I doubt this becomes a big case or anything, but just thought I'd pass on that info. This article I'm linking was posted only 2 days ago so it's still pretty new.

Anyone who moves the system while it is spinning a disc is an idiot.

Agreed. Every single game system that read a disc to play games specifically said in it's owner's manual NOT to move the system while it's reading a disc. This isn't something new.

If I had to move my PS2 or Xbox, I made sure the system didn't have a disc in the drive, was off and unplugged to make sure it didn't accidentally come on while I was moving. I do the same thing with my stereo, my DVD player, and my computer.

Anyone who moves any of those items while it's either playing or reading a disc, they deserve to have it get scratched
