Not to mention some of the dialogue in the Superman / Zod fight was terrible. "Either you die or I do". Deep stuff. Or how about "Where did you train, on a farm??" Hahaha.

My personal favorite is, "You're a monster, Zod. And I'm going to stop you".
I probably had my action figures saying similar things when I was playing with them as a five year old.

My issue with the action has very little to do with the length of each individual scene and everything to do with how those scenes seem to come at the expense of genuine emotion and interesting character interaction.

"I'm in love with you, Lois. And I'm going to kiss you."

"You're a dog, Krypto. And I'm going to pet you."

"You're tasty, hamburger. And I'm going to eat you."

Etc.

It's sad when you can't defend a film without insulting other ones.

Considering some of you guys treat Whedon like he's the God of Dialogue when he's written some "cringeworthy" lines of his own, I feel justified in bringing up other movies. Especially when most of you turn a blind eye to any flaws in said movies when you do NOTHING but nitpick the films you don't like to death.

In your opinion of course.

Who here has turned a blind eye to the flaws in movies that they like? When I mentioned that I enjoyed Thor 2, I was up front with its flaws and why it wasn't a good movie overall but that there were parts that were good enough for me to enjoy it a lot.

Yah, that's why I said "to me", as in, this is how I feel, this is my opinion.

Really? You guys who love MOS should do a better job of defending the movie. Saying "well that's your opinion" and "well I liked it" adds nothing to the conversation

Neither does going on for thirty pages and reciting individual lines of dialogue about a movie you can't stand...

Whedon is a good writer and can write great dialogue, much more so than Goyer. Not saying he's perfect but he's clearly better.
And I don't think anyone here has "turned a blind eye" to the flaws of any movie. It just strikes me as petty that you'd bring in another writer of other movies to somehow prop up the one you are defending.

Talking about the elements that don't work in MOS in a thread dedicated to rating the movie. Nothing wrong with that. I bet if it was thirty pages of praise you'd bask in the fun :o :hehe:

Actually, the farm line was one of the few one liners I found to be pretty clever. It's safe to assume that Zod figured out that the farm was where Clark grew up, so I liked that he was taking a jab at Clark's upbringing. Idk, maybe it was just Shannon's delivery of it. He was the best thing about that movie. I also liked his monologue before attacking Superman at the end. I just liked the "my soul, that's what you've taken from me" bit, it really drove home the whole religous zealot angle they were going with this Zod.

All in all, I rate the movie as average. A LOT of room for improvement, especially in the writing and I wouldn't mind a lighter tone more befitting of the character. Not gonna happen anytime, I know, but at least I still have the Donner movies. Cavill's good in the role, and I loved what they did with Krypton, actually giving it a culture this time around. Unfortunately not nearly as much care was given to Metropolis, which you only really see when it's being decimated (and since this is the only time you see it, it's rather difficult to give a damn about the destruction), and even then it's just a generic CG city scape. Dull grey. Worse than Nolan's Gotham after Begins.

I further expanded on this point by bringing up that Superman was, unlike Jesus, saving us from something he himself brought onto humanity. The film makes the point to emphasize this by having Zod say "you led us here, Kal".

Not to turn this into a religious debate, but there is totally an argument to be made that Jesus was, in fact, saving humanity from a threat that he himself brought here.

I'm actually getting pretty tired of the constant Jesus allegory with Superman. It was cool in SR, not too heavy-handed, but they really ran it into the ground in MOS. I liked the greek myth angle they took in the first two Reeve films better.

I'm aware of that argument but it has nothing to do with the movie, as I guarantee you beyond a shadow of a doubt they did not think it through that hard.

"Not to turn this into a religious debate...but I'm going to do just that"

Not at all. Simply pointing out an angle from which the religious analogy does work.

Maybe it does, and they actually put so much thought into this movie that we, with our tiny minds, can barely comprehend their genius... is the type of ironic comment I would have made if it hadn't been so incredibly painful to type.

Lol. Yeah we're on the same page.
I have one exception in my rule about "I'm all for subjectivity when it comes to art". and it's people who defend Thor 2, claim they had a great time while watching it, and are serious about it.
Well the high user rating on RT, as well as the modestly positive response from critics, shows that you've got a bone to pick with a good deal of people. I'm not going to say it was as well-crafted as the other MCU films, it had some glaring flaws, but to pretend that you just can't see how anyone could enjoy the movie is ridiculous. I'm not sure if there's a single movie I would say that about.

Can I just say I don't think it's quite that and I am in no way saying you did this but a lot of people react as if what they're saying is fact at times. Kind of like "no way it's awful, yada yada" but us who love it have also been guilty of that too. I think it's like a defence mechanism more than anything.

^ Seems more like thin skin, tbh.
