Downey told SFX Magazine that 2012's The Avengers will be Marvel Studios main event after four years of build up that started with Iron Man in 2008, and if they're going to do it then it had better be done right.

"It's the pinnacle, but only if it's done in the smartest and best and most creatively sound way possible," he said. "And I'm not saying we can't get there. I'm just saying it would be better to get there and not stay on schedule than to get everyone what they were hoping for in terms of a release date but not do it correctly. And by correctly, I mean my way," he laughed.
I agree with him i am willing to wait if they have to push release date another year. I will wait if you work on a film trying to make the release date you end up with X3.

Eh... Avengers will likely go to 2013 if they need the extra year. But that means IM3 would get pushed back another year. Five years is kind long considering they have been setting this up from IM in 2008. I'd prefer they stay as firm to that deadline as they possibly can with 2013 being the absolute last resort.

He's right though, better to wait until the story is right rather than go in half arsed for the sake of a deadline that can easily be moved.

But then will 2012 be another lame duck year for Marvel Studios with Spidey and more X-Men movies filling in as the main Marvel attractions that year. Obviously Sony and Fox want that. And what if you are coming off mediocre or lackluster performances from Thor and Cap? The sting would persist a whole more year. If they have a small project like Dr. Strange or Ant-Man or SHIELD movie lined up for 2012 then I wouldn't have an issue with a delay.

A lot of if, ands or buts here, point is do you want a film that 100% ready to go or a half arsed attempt they throw together to meet a deadline? Really, Marvel shouldn't have made deadlines for these movies so far in advanced, otherwise they risk putting themselves in the situation that RDJ is commenting on. Get it right first, release dates can be changed, it's not like the characters are going anywhere.

I am not disputing that, but Marvel/Disney is a business. Can Marvel/Disney really afford another fiscal year similar to 2009? They'll get a cut from Spidey and X-Men but it won't be enough. You can't keep throwing away every other year or every third year at the box office anymore if you are a major studio. Marvel movies will likely serve as the bulk of Disney's tentpoles over the next few years.

I think you'll find Pixar will do more business for Disney than Marvel will over the next few years, on top of that they've got other properties besides superhero stuff that they can go to, they're no limited in their choices. You brought up that Disney is a business, well what's the smartest business choice? Release a movie that's below standard to met a release date, or move the date and release the movie when the film is up to the standard it should be. Fans have a lot of expectations for this series of films, Marvel knows this, so far they've got one hit and one semi-miss, if Avengers isn't up to speed in time for it's intended release the smart decision is to delay it until it is.

Other properties as in what? I looked up their slate. Outside of the plethera of animated movies, which they plan on upping even more over the next several years, their live action projects are pretty weak:

Tron 2 (Even Disney will tell you they don't expect much)
Lone Ranger (Next Bruckheimer flop)
John Carter of Mars (With Gambit and Silverfox as the leads... nuff said)

That's tentpole money in your opinion? I think not. They already ditched Narnia, if Persia flops that potential franchise will go by the wayside, who knows how much longer they will string out the POTC franchise, but Stranger Tides will probably be the last for a while. There is a reason they made the move for Marvel.

So? The animated films still make a a truck load of cash, Pixar themselves will bring in a majority of the dough. Those films you've mentioned, as well as The Sorcerer's Apprentice are potential franchises, just like Thor and Cap America are, the point is they've got more going for them outside of Superheroes, just like WB have, so again they're not short of options should Avengers be put on hold for another year, hell they've got a Pixar film being released in 2012 which will fill any void created by moving the Avangers. RDJ is right, if it's not ready, wait until it is and if it isn't up to standard I expect him to say so.

If they were content with a Pixar movie and a once in a decade franchise, hell once in a life time franchise since they have never had a franchise quite like POTC, they would have never made the move for Marvel in the first place. Throwing away 2012 and going with the one pixar movie won't get it done.

I'm encouraged how game Downey is and how dedicated he is to this.

He knows what side of the bread is buttered.

I do agree with RDJ that the Avengers, when it is done, should be done right. This will be the first superhero crossover in cinema, and it'd impact not just Marvel/Disney/Paramount, but also three franchises as well. I'd hate to have to wait an extra year for this, but I think this postponement may be the right call to make if they want to make sure they have the right script and director in place before moving forward. This movie has to succeed, because the price of failure will be too great to bear.

If Avengers is not up to scratch they will be saying goodbye to a billion dollar franchise with interest in sequels, related films & merchandise all affected. Worth waiting the extra year (if needed) so you can guarantee at least an Avengers trilogy & maybe trilogies for all the main characters.

Also Avengers is an uprecedented attempt at combining inidivdually big superheroes. If it fails the MU as a whole takes a big battering & this kind of innovation is unlikely to be repeated.

Avengers will make money regardless so long as the 2011 movies don't flop... bad or good. If it's B & R bad then obviously the legs won't carry it anywhere near a billion. Expect to see sequels no matter what. Don't expect RDJ to play IM for an Avenger trilogy. Other than that, I am sure they can get most of the characters to return for a sequel.

Don Cheadle says there's not even a script yet....doesn't bode well for 2012...

Means the script hasn't been turned in yet, not that it isn't being worked on
