Reasons for the disappointing numbers-Discussion

you mean its a shame that fox didtnt make a more serious movei right?

you cna not expect that people will take fantastic moveis serious. they are not serous movies.

This comment is exactly why the film failed. The Fantastic Four is ment to be serious, the FF basically created the Marvel Universe.Mr.Fantastic,The Invisible Woman,The Human Torch..The Thing.

These are not funny like in the movie, the are smart..and have went against Galactus and Annihilus. But no,the film was not taken seriously and made only a little bit more than what was spent to film it.

Its sad to see that people actually think of the FF as something easy, and this is why i think the franchise is doomed.

Timing, baby.

FF:ROTS came out at a good time for an opening, but a bad time to really have any Box Office legs.

Very true, you would think they would have learned from the last time....

We have a BO thread full over numbers and lots of talk of other movies figures in comparison but what has caused this film to under perform ?

It seems pretty much agreed from critics to fans that it is better than the first and yet it is gonna make less which is a real shame IMO

Possible reasons for discussion

-The negative impact of the first movie

-The months competition

-Lack of action

-seeming small in scale compared to the rest of the summers big hitters

-Improved but not enough for people to care after the first

The film sucked, so WOM was terrible for the film.

Competition? Yeah, it hurt the film but simply because the other films we're all much better films!

The Incredibles is a different genre folks, plus, it's from Pixar, those movies usuall do very well--like most computer animated/family films these days. You can't compare the two, just because they're a replica of FF. Why do you all like to compare comic book films to every other movie?

Not even with a quality/high-profile director could F4 make The Incredibles or Spider-Man type money. Not every comic book film is going to be a huge success like Spidey. Not even icons like Batman Begins and Superman Returns made The Incredibles' 270 million. So how the hell is FF2 going to make such a cume?

Nonsense. I've heard no bad WOM. It's just that this film is not an iconic blockbuster like Spider-Man.

They chose to aim it towards kids, which was wrong in my view as the FF do not have kids' books (like Harry Potter does), don't have well-known cartoons (the FF animated series are not well known at all - I've never ever seen them on TV ever!), or merchandising.

Making it more of an adult sci-fi movie might have worked better, but with the modest budget, it was never going to be a Pirate-sized epic.

It also seemed a little short - especially for the momentous events it was portraying. But that's typical of a Fox movie.

Lol, what are you talking about?

Visit this thread:
worst movie this summer so far.

FF:RotSS and Evan Almighty are being slaughtered.

So what. That's a load of internet geeks whining because they have nothing else to do. We're not the mainstream on here.

There are no people gathering in streets or at office water coolers to talk about how bad FF is. There is no bad word of mouth. A thread involving obsessive fanboys like us lot on here does not qualify as bad word of mouth - there are threads bashing every superhero movie. Get some perspective.

Lol, Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer bombed because the film was terrible!

Die Hard and Ratatouille are alot better films.

The "mainstream" are showing which films they are enjoying and Fantastic Four is not one of them.

I second this.

Though it wasn't as bad as I'd thought it'd be, it still should've been PG-13. I'm sure a PG rating turned alot of teens away from it because they think they're too "cool" to see a PG movie.

Were the teens too cool to see the first few Harry Potter movies? Were the teens too cool to see Star Wars Episodes I and II?

Some of the best movies ever made were PG.

It didn't,check it's numbers against Bourne and Bad Boys II and then look at it's competition and good holds

The point is Fox biggest money maker this year will be Fantastic Four, bar none.

A films success depends on alot of things, like promotion and hype. For a film to be very successful it must have good legs which depends on WOM.

For instance, Transformers made more than RotSS in 4 days. Why? Because the WOM is excellent for the film and people are enjoying the film and are seeing the film more than once.

That, and the fact that CGI frenzies turn on people like Playboy nowadays.

That's not to say I didn't like Transformers- I loved it. I just thought it relied alot on "t3h pr3tty CG1" for the draw-in.

And ROTSS didn't? The main draw-in for the movie was the Surfer who is (ZOMG!) a CGI character.

The reason FF2 has posted such low numbers is because it's a terrible movie. It has nothing to do with the negative impact of the first movie or the competition from other summer movies; if this were truly a good movie, then the word-of-mouth would be attracting viewers (and bringing in money) left and right. But FF2 was just a bad movie and it's box office sales are suffering for it.

Exactly.

I agree. Everything on Hunter's list helped this movie become BO disappointing. I don't recall anyone raving about this film. Many were turned off because of the first. There were films with better CG; lots of competition. And yes, Rise of the Surfer was a huge step up and improvement over the first; but with that said, it still isn't that good!

Oh, and a crappy writer, directer, and crew don't help anything. But at least it had a good cast.

They are at my office. I think I'm the only one who even bothered to see FF2. They all hated the first movie.

I didn't hate FF2, but it was probably my least favorite movie of the summer so far. It was too campy, and the story seemed like something from a cartoon episode. I liked the Stan Lee cameo, and I love the scenes between Johnny and Ben, but the movie as a whole just wasn't very good. And it's disappointed, because I think both movies could have been so much better.

There are just better movies playing right now. Die Hard, 1408, Ratatouille...those were all terrific, and they're getting great WOM. I saw Transformers last night, and it was awesome. I definitely want to see that again. Hell, I've seen POTC3 three times, and I'd rather see that again than go back to FF2 a second time.

Bottom line, it's a crowded summer and the movie just wasn't very good. I wish it had been better!

All of the above, with and underlining of the last point. The movie may be better than the first, but that's just not saying much. It isn't anything special, and an FF movie should be.

Transformers has a market presence out there due to the toys and a current animated series. People know about it. Kids are enjoying the cartoons and playing with the toys. That's a big factor. Fantastic Four doesn't have that advantage (there've been 3 animated series but they are not currently running and are not well-known).

What FF needed to do was get a stronger presence in the kids' market well before the movie (an animated series, children's books, toys.) Hardly anyone I know has heard of the movie. It's not bad word of mouth, but ZERO word of mouth! Only diehard comicbook fans are going to see it.

However, the Transformers trailer does look good (it doesn't open in the UK for weeks so i cannot say how good it is) and, although the thought of cars turning into robots doesn't excite me as much as human superheroes and mutants, it does look worth seeing. I can't really gauge whether it's a better film but it does look to have a grander scale and a more powerful look and I may go to see it based on the trailers. But I can't personally say I prefer it or that it's better until I see it. I suspect it will have wider appeal due to the kids'/family market being more aware of it.

Yes, I wish it had been better too. (BTW I hated the Stan Lee cameo, which felt forced into the movie and had no relevance at all for mainstream viewers - it was just a corny in-joke. They kid themselves if they think everyone out there has heard of Stan Lee).

But marketing has an impact. Everyone knows Harry Potter, or James Bond, or Spider-Man. Mention Fantastic Four and no one knows what you are on about. I know three other people who went to see the first movie, all thought it rather lightweight. I know one other person who went to see the second movie, and they really enjoyed it.

FF needs much stronger marketing - as well as being a better film - if it is going to stand a chance against titans such as Potter. As for Transformers, that has toys everywhere (and has done for years) and a current animated series. Kids and their parents will know about Transformers. Kids will be asking their parents to take them to see it.

It will be an interesting summer to see the final positions of FF2, Potter, Transformers and Die Hard... but remember the opening times vary in different territories. The UK doesn't get Transformers until the end of July.
Here, FF2 is playing more times a day than Die Hard and Shrek.
