Rebecca Ferguson Takes the Lead in Sci-Fi Film Life

It looks like it could be good.

Looks thouroughly unoriginal, but I don't care, astronaut movies FTW.

It's a movie troupe when commanding member to the group has to be 'by the books' or a 'for the mission' hard-ass, so to speak. I've always appreciated it when they are actually fleshed out the characters, and become not a cartoony sociopath void of any emotion. Or worse of all boring, and I hope 'Life' does something with that archetype and make it special.

Reynolds is not going to make it throught the first half of the movie.

with so many sci fi astronaut movies and recentley video games adaptation you hope Dead Space movie soon.

Is she really the lead considering the other two dudes?

I love how they don't even try to hide the black man dying first in the marketing. Usually studios at least attempt to maintain the illusion that the he makes it out of the first act alive.

Also, it really just looks like Alien, only set closer to the present rather than far in the future.

With it being written by Paul Wernick & Rhett Reese, there may be some surprises in store.
They're smart writers. I can't see them being satisfied with just making an Alien rip-off.

It also looks like Europa Report.

Yeah, that's what I'd hope for but when I see a movie blatantly and obliviously falling into certain familiar tropes like that aforementioned "black man dies first" cliche, it doesn't give me much hope.

On the other hand though, maybe they're just playing with us and making it LOOK like he dies first when he just loses an arm or gets infected or whatever. But I doubt it.

I don't think they let the black guy die first by accident. They know it's a familiar trope, and I'm sure they wanted to play with that.

Yeah, I hope it's just misdirection. But they're still opening themselves up to criticism for it because the trailer presents it that way and people are going to automatically assume things. And the only way they could defend themselves would be to spoil part of the movie.

Of course, studios could just avoid this kind of crap by having more than one black guy in a horror movie once in a while.

And by the way, after the Prince of Persia flop Jake Gyllenhaal has been great at picking projects (as much as I like him, the same can't be said for Ryan Reynolds). Another reason I'm looking forward to this.

Yeah, Jake is pretty awesome. I need to watch Nightcrawler again. And yeah, he's been choosy on his projects. He dodged a bullet when he turned down the Flagg role in Suicide Squad.

Yup, which is part of the reason I think this will be good and hope the Division movie will be good too. Jake and Ryan switched roles in this too didn't they?

Gyllenhaal is probably my favorite actor right now though so I may be a bit biased :funny:

IIRC it's more of an ensemble piece but she has the biggest role. I might be remembering it wrong but I think [BLACKOUT]Reynolds has a very small role.[/BLACKOUT]

It's an ensemble piece but Rebecca is the lead. Reynolds role in this is pretty small. Just because he starred in Deadpool doesn't make him some big shot actor in Hollywood.

I agree though to be fair, I don't know if the writers have made his character specifically black or not. I'd think they probably wrote down that he's British. It could be on the director. I guess the director can say 'Hey at least we got an Asian dude!' to protect his back.

It's funny how that, despite a troupe, it still kinda happens. Even in 2016's very own Blair Witch, where the 'hipster hicks' get to outlive the dude for a little more!

He was actually supposed to take the lead, but couldn't due to scheduling conflicts. So he took the supporting role.

I hope he'll pop up in much more high profile pics like this, and will start being a bit more picky when it comes to scripts.

Jeez... March 2017 is already packed as it is.
