Reboot: Character Portrayal

I know I can't wait for another Superman film with a lame land plot, cheesey Lex Luthor with no Lexcorp, and regurgitated lines and imagery.

:whatever:

They should just give us a Lex Luthor: MOS movie. That should shut everyone up.

I just don't understand why Superman Returns had to keep beating a dead horse with the constant dialogue references and visual homages. "Wink wink, do you remember this from the first movie?"

Guess the only solution is to form an angry mob and chase Singer into the woods.

Nah I like Singer, I just hate his Superman movie. :cwink:

One line or scene would have been plenty to reference what came before IMO.

You and me both. "Fresh take" brings to mind bad images.

New crappy costume, new music... :o

It doesn't *have* to mean that though trust me, I know how you feel.

We all still have scars from the various attempts before Returns, hell just look at how often pics from Tim Burtons take show up just to remind ourselves of how the character dodged a cinematic bullet. I think part of why Returns has any love at all is simply the feeling of utter relief that even though we didn't get a great movie *at least* we didn't get Burton's Last DarkKnight Bladethrower of Krypton or the Jon Peters Gay Polar Bear Project or JJ Abram's Can O' Costume movie.

So of course when we as fans of Superman hear "fresh take" it brings to mind the most negative images or at least moreso than it would to begin with.

But what it can and should mean for Superman is looking at a classic thing with it's familiar elements intact but with fresh eyes.

I'd love a mix of Birthright, and the Lex from Bermejo's MOS, without the stupid Kryptonian invasion plot.

Bingo!

.

Exactly.

Ah yes. SUPERman or superMAN, that's the question.

As long as he keeps his super-powers he is SUPERman. So we need more of the man so he is SUPERMAN. :)

That is exactly right. Because, even though he is the hero we deserve, he's not the one that we need right now, because needing him would mean that we deserve it and even though deserving the need in the hero would mean we need him to become the hero that is deserved at this point in time, that doesn't mean we won't need him. err.. wait. I'm confusing myself.

If you want Richard Donner ripoffs that's fine by me... but no one can do Donna's Superman better than the man himself. And anyone who tries to do so will fail miserably just like Bryan Singer.

Some people say Lester didn't do too bad in SII compared to Donner's cut though. :yay:

Nah, if people hated cheese and over the top evil plots in superhero movies, they'd hate the Spiderman movies.

And I see many fans wetting their pants over lines and images that are regurgitated form comic books.

it's a little bit different when certain elements of the mythology are being put on the screen for the first time. And don't tell me you wouldn't have liked a more serious version of Lex.

The old Superman series is just played out

Would instantly equal Heath's Joker in sheer awesomeness.

Who is that, Goblin? I know him but I don't recognize him in that picture.

How so? Is there some kind of cheese-free pass for first timers?

And don't tell me you wouldn't have liked a more serious version of Lex.

Yes, I would.

The fact that it wasn't the way I wanted hasn't freaked me out to the point of hating the movie though.

The old Superman series is just played out

Yeah, that was just crap. Donner's movies are an entire different story.

I was referring to this.

I don't want a dark Superman movie, what I want is a film that has nothing to do with the Richard Donner series. We want a fresh take on the character Warner Bros.!

I want that too. I still can't understand why WB thought it was a good idea to continue a 20-year-old series instead of rebooting.

Welcome to the Hype. :word:

SaveSuperman.com is already on it. :hehe:

Only if Lex were written to be as compelling as the Joker.

Lex needs to either not be in the next couple of films or at least not be the main bad. Because I think people are tired of seeing Superman battle one dude in a business suit. Wether he's a wacky land crook or evil CEO is beside the point.

If Lex is gonna be there at all though the CEO version is probably the best way to go I would just have one caveat. He can NOT stay on his untouchable pedestal forever. I would want his ass red-booted off his ivory tower by at least the end of movie 2 or 3.

My only issue with CEO Lex over evil scientist Lex is that while CEO Lex might be a better idea in many respects, I think it has a certain degree of shelf-life. After awhile Superman being ineffective against some bald headed puppetmaster in a tie gets real old and makes the character look bad. Besides, supervillany is currently awash in guys in suits standing in shadows with their hands behind their back saying cryptic ****. Obviously this is to some degree reflective of the times but it's kinda boring.

A good guy in his own mind. Other than a villain like the Joker, that's the best kind.
