Reboot: Character Portrayal

Another thing Singer promised and did not delivered. I think that maybe Singer should've worked in the script more and divided SR in 2 movies in order to tell a more cohesive and complete story. THe script as it is for SR is a complete mess. The episode "Big Girls don't Fly" of Lois & Clark dealt with the themes of SR in a much better way. Maybe Singer should've showed the Lois & Clark relantioship when they actually get together and have a real relationship with a villain like Metallo or Parasite and then in the end, Luthor is released, Braniac arrives and Superman is off to Krypton to look for survivors.

That's what the Donner Superman movies were for.

They didn't have a relationship. As far as I remeber, in the first movie, they just flew together. In SII, Lois forgot about everything with amnesia Kiss.

Not only that, Singer underestimated Margot Kidder and Chris Reeve's acting ability and how those actors WERE really important to the sucess of those movies. We felt for them because they actually had chemestry together. If SR had Chris Reeve, Gene Hackman and Margot Kidder and was made right after SII, maybe the history would've been different.

This sequel idea JUST didn't work. Most of the general public had a vague idea of those old, VERY dated and, IMO, VERY OVERRATED movies. Singer himself and the writers didnt know what he was using as reference. We didn't and we still don't. It was just a mess. Brandon Routh and Bosworth did not have chemestry and the whole relationship between Superman & Lois, THE CENTRAL THEME OF THE MOVIE, didn't work at ALL. Lois was most of the time pissed over nothing, over something she did not remember and she treated Clark reaally bad, like she didn't even know him.

Time to let those movies in the past, where they belong and move on Superman for the 21st century with a reboot, origin and all. This time, I PRAY TO GOD the director and writers do their homework and study Superman, his character and the comics and are able to put it all into a cohesive and entertaining story that will make Superman fans happy and proud of loving this character.

And, while that doesn't happen...

WE WAIT...

AND WAIT...

:(

Just let me know if we can keep derailing tthe dark Superman thread with more old Singer discussion. I have very long replies being written right now.

Don't bother with that. I've had enough of discussion with you about it and i'm not in the mood to continue it.

Oh, don't worry, I'll post anyway since I'm free to do it regardless of your opinion.

Now, about where to reply, I rather want the opinion of a mod whose opinion about this matter holds some relevance.

I find it incredible that you AT LEAST don't agree with LITTLE bit of what I said.

Thought you didn't care about discussing this with me?

But relax, you'll have a detailed reply on what I agree or not in the proper section.

To me, the worst of it all was that Brandon Routh was actually a GREAT Superman, despite costume, make-up and terrible script and, unfortunately, he probably won't be used in a reboot.

He is a nice guy, cares about the character. He is not the best actor in the world but he was/IS right for Supes.

I dunno, I think he is in for now.....

That's good.

I appologize for my rant over SR and Singer in this thread. This lack of news is DISTURBING, to say the least.

I think that a GL casting confirmation would be nice to freshen thins up.

BTW, Even Smallville gets the character right sometimes. I actually like the last episode, Stiletto, a lot.

Guys keep the discussion of Superman Returns please.

Lol, I just hope we dont hear Burton is up for it....Now THAT would be dark.

Umm, I got it just fine. But, it was not the film we had been following in production for months. They (singer and company) kept playing up the whole ''the world had moved on from Superman angle'', and then chose to edit it so that it didnt feel that way at all.
Quite frankly, I felt cheated at the final product.

I see.

My case is different; I was not spoiled when I saw the movie for the first time. :word: And loved it.

I liked it, but I really wanted to love it and didnt.
It just didnt give me the same feeling that S:TM did, or even the same as Spider-man did for that matter.
I hope beyong hope that the next one will satisfy ALL of us.

SV is obvious proof DC don't mind darker, realistic characterisations, as Jimmy is now a drug addict and Green Arrow is a murderer, but would they allow the new movie to completely depart from the traditional idealisms of Superman?

Would they allow Jimmy to be a drug addict in the new movie also?

^The next movie should stay as close a possible to the original essence of the characters, especially if it's a reboot. Leave all experiments to the sequels.

You can't satisfy ALL of us, that is near to impossible especially when some fanboys complain about Clark Kent/Superman's HAIR. If the director tries to appease everyone, he or she will go frickin' nuts.

haha. the hair is the least of my worries.

Well here's more of how I would portray Lois Lane:

In this first film she's stuck doing tabloid fluff stuff for the dismal Daily Planet newspaper. She wants to do harder edge news stories like crime and politics but she's considered a lightweight by her largely male collegues. Her female counter parts think she's gotten by on her looks and her father's name. In fact she's lived in her father's shadow all of her life. They don't speak and their relationship is a tense one. Her mother passed away when she was young and that had a profound effect on her including her relationship with her father. Lois tries to avoid commitment when it comes to romantic relationships . As a result she tries not to wear her romantic feelings on her sleeve. She's goes out on date's but is wary about letting the relationship get too serious.

She uses humor as a defensive , and can be known to have a sharp tounge when it involves verbal combat. She is quite charming and has a vunerable side only a few have seen. She stays away from office romances because she knows that she has alot to prove and she doesn't want the harsh gossip spread about her to be given merit. Overall she's a cynic. She's seen the worst in mankind and has lost her faith in the kindness of strangers. When Superman first arrives she's wary of him. She believes he has some sort of angle. Once he proves himself to her she begins to fall for him and it scares her. Superman restores her faith and proves to her their are still good selfless idealist out there.

that sounds like a nice way to go about lois in a reboot.

Thanx

Here's my Clark for the first film

He's travelled the world living in a few countries. He's learned several lanuages and like a sponge such up as many cultures as possible. At this point he's travelling across a war torn country writing down his expirences. He works for Reuters but there's a part of him that would like to write the great American novel. That's his own private dream. You could say Clark is something of a dreamer. There's so much he'd like to do but that often conflicts with what he has to do. He's an idealist who believes he can change the world by example. At the same time he has the burden of a lost civilization on his shoulders.

In his heart and soul he is a human but he now carries the weight of a culture he has no emotional connection to. However as the last of his kind he wants to represent them with honor and dignity. At the same time he was raised by humans. He has thoughts, fears, and doubts like the rest of us. He is one of us . As a result he constantly struggles with himself over who he is . Johnathan Kent's death was a turning point in his life. He idiolized him and when Jor El in the form of a hologram begins his training Clark is resistant to embrace him. He feels it is somehow a betrayal to Johnathan memory. He wears his father's glasses for the sentimental value. His two heritages are part of his whole makeup.

He's an idealist and is a bit overconfident in terms of the changes he can make. Personality wise he's quite bright but doesn't show it off unless it comes to verbal sparing with Lois. He's a down to earth guy which masks his driven work ethic. He's had a couple of girlfriends one being Lana in highschool the other being a young lady in Japan. Right now he really isn't looking for a relationship even though Martha gives him the third degree about settling down. He dates but for the most part he has one focus.

When the struggling Daily Planet offers him a job he jumps at it considering it's past former glory. His reuters co-workers think he's nuts for going to work for a paper that's in the red. He's taken seriously by his collegues and friends and they believe he could go far. His boss even gives him a lecture about how he's throwing his career away by joining the Daily Planet.

Sounds like some nice ideas, one thing i would like to see different is keep johnthan alive while clark is adult/superman days.

I'm loving that Lois description because thats exactly how I see the character.

My idea for Lois is that she is a major force on the Daily Planet and has even won awards despite her age. She tries to mantain this tough as nails attitude but really on the inside she gets shaken up by the action scenes in the field. Shes sarcastic, witty, brilliant, and powerful. And thats what Clark loves about her
