Im sitting here just got done watching vampire hunter d bloodlust for the millionth time and i was thinking that it was so well made. I hope to obtain some ideas of good anime movies because sometimes spending hours watching a series is too time consuming so please hit me with your ideas.

Have you seen the first Vampire Hunter D? It's a little bit better...

Anything by Hayao Miyazaki

Ghost in the Shell (the classic original). I also liked GITS: Solid State Society
Steamboy
Read or Die
Escaflowne: The Movie
Appleseed
Ninja Scrolls
Lupin the Third (several movies)
Van Helsing The London Assignment
if you haven't seen it Akira

Armitage III: Poly Matrix(Dubbed, it features Elizabeth Berkley, Kiefer Sutherland)

The title may throw you off, but Princess Mononoke is good.

The usuals like Ghost in the Shell, Ninja Scroll, Akira, Vampire Hunter D, Batle Angel, etc.

The Cowboy Bebop movie is well done and can serve as a stand alone, you don't have to watch the series.

If you watch Bleach or Full Metal Alchemist, the first movie for Bleach was well done I thought, as is FMA's Conqueror's of Shambala.

The Grave of Fireflies (something like that), about children in Japan trying to survive during WW2, and hiding in the mountains during bombings while starving, was sad but a good movie.

Perfect Blue is good, but a bit of a mind **** at certain parts.

The Samurai X movies are good watches (I believe they can be watched as stand alones).

There are more, but I'm a bit brain dead atm lol. I do get caught up in anime series too much, there are several movies I've wanted to watch but keep putting off. Wings of Honneamise and Metropolis both look good, but have yet to watch them.

Anything by Studio Ghibli, but definately try the following:

Howl's Moving Castle
Princess Mononoke
Spirited Away
Laputa: Castle in the Sky
Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind
Pom Poko
My Neighbour Totoro

I recommend Paprika if you get the chance. It's by Satoshi Kon who did Paranoia Agent and Perfect Blue. It's all about entering peoples dreams through a computer interface (not original but well executed).
Oh, another one of his is Tokyo Godfathers. Sounds like a gangster film but its actually about three homeless people who find a baby abandoned at christmas. Ones a runaway girl, ones a man with a hidden past and the other's a transvestite who wants to bring the baby up as his own. Very funny.

Just to add to the discussion, a good anime movie is GREY: DIGITAL TARGET. It was released by Viz on VHS in the 90's on dub/sub, but was never converted to DVD ever. It's 80's sci-fi stuff, but it is a well done and simple allegory about the futility of war without getting political. The VHS is fairly easy to find online, and isn't usually more than $20-$30 or so.

Metropolis is awesome. It led me to seek out more about the work of creator Osamu Tezuka. Now he's one of my all-time favorite cartoonists...and to be honest I'm actually not really all that big a fan of anime.
