Red Dawn Remake

So I just watched the original again and I got to say Chris was an excellent choice for Jed... I can already see himm in the role

O and Wtf is up with wikipedia having John Cena in the cast as a guy named Adam

That's Wiki for you.

And yeah, Hemsworth is a really good casting.

I hear that there is a remake of the 1984 Russia-Invades-the-USA flick coming in November. Now personally, I tried to watch the edited for TV version (granted, that probably didnt help) but I dont see why its so fondly remembered. I only watched part of it and thought it was ridiculous.

Anyway, discuss the original or remake here. I guess in the remake, the US will be invaded by the Russians and Chinese, instead of the Russians and the Cubans.

This is an awesome fan creation!

Like the 1984 original, some sort of political events lead up to the war like the Soviet invasion of Poland, Communist revolutions in Central America and Mexico, etc.

It would be funny if the current narcotics problem with Mexico, China invades in order to solve the crisis, invades Taiwan etc. Or I think it's simply over oil.

It's a ****** movie thats nothing but a giant piece of propaganda.

There's already a thread about this on this board. You can read all kinds of comments about both the original and the upcoming remake on there.

And while the plot mentioned in that thread (and various source materials) says that the invading force is a combination of Russians and Chinese this time instead of Russians and Cubans like in the original, I don't see why. Russia is no longer a communist country and thus no longer a part of "The Red Menace". Being invaded by the Chinese and North Koreans makes more sense, as they're both still communist countries and were allies during the Korean War.

China can't even conquer Taiwan so they want to invade the USA by crossing an ocean? :cwink:

I don't even get why the original gets such a bad rep. It's not the best movie ever made and it's exaggerated, but so is "Saving Private Ryan". There's one leader of the occupying force who sympathizes with the Wolverines because they remind him of his youth, the Wolverine have success in the beginning, not because the Soviet army is so incompetent but because those were more or less simple paratroopers from South America. When the better forces arrive the Wolverines keep on losing and almost die.

I think its well loved because its a unique take on the war movie genre and a pretty good action/suspense movie to boot. I'd suggest renting the DVD and giving it a shot.

Come on!!! It's fun. Politics? What the hell are you talkin' about???

I'm a big Lefty and I loved it when it came out. Country Boys run off into the woods and then come back and use their Redneck skills to defeat the USSR?

That's good **** right there.

I took it to be a piece of crap that has no place outside of cold war era paranoia.

Why? Because it's out of time that means it shouldn't be watched? I guess I shouldn't watch Charlie Chaplin's Little Dictator because it was WWII propaganda. Or I shouldn't watch Reefer Madness and get a laugh. Or the Batman Serials. Or maybe I shouldn't watch the million dollar blockbuster Captain America movie that's coming out in a couple of years.

This rates pretty low on the propaganda meter anyway. Somewhere in the Rambo area I'm thinkin'. But nowhere near the Classic Westerns and their depiction of the Native Americans.

I did a forum search and nothing came up. Ah well, Lea Thompson is in it and she was always a hottie so I'll give it a shot.

It'll be interesting to see how it's written to make it believable.

I think that's the production's biggest challenge.

That's odd. I've posted on that thread myself maybe a year ago. Maybe it was deleted due to lack of use?

And I totally agree with you on Lea Thompson.

Hey Hobgoblin! I found the thread! This is the one I was telling you about, and it's still active!

You must not have done a very thorough forum search. I punched "Read Dawn" into the Key Words box, clicked on "Search Thread Titles Only", then clicked Search and got the original thread in about 30 seconds. Anyway, I quickly posted on that other thread so it'll be found at the top of the first page of this discussion board. Maybe as moderator you should merge the two threads.

How is it a s#!t movie? It has a well written, if somewhat unrealistic, story. A talented cast. A producer and director that cared about producing a quality product. What's s#!t about that?

And was it Cold War propaganda? Of course it was! It was written and produced during the height of the Cold War! But it's no more anti-Soviet propaganda than many of the Bond films that were made at the time. Or Rambo: First Blood Part 2. Or even Rocky IV.

Take it for what it is, and what it was meant to be. A fun action/thriller with a very well written story.

I take it as a fun, action film. That's about it.

Bingo. By your definition Pearl Harbor is anti-Japanese propaganda, or any Mel Gibson movie is anti-British propaganda. It was made as the Cold War was ending, the hate wasn't as extreme. It used the Russians as enemies for the same reason Saving Private Ryan used the Germans as enemies. Because they were the country fighting the US at the time. Is it a bit patriotic? Sure, but whats wrong with that?

If it were propaganda, it wouldn't be set in Coldorado, it would be set in Moscow, showing people standing in soup lines and freezing on the streets thanks to Communism. Its not so much propaganda as it is a fun, alternate history movie with a patriotic leaning. I don't see how that makes it, "****."

There was a scene with one of the Communist Generals that really made him out to be... not such a bad guy? Really, he sees the brothers walk past him, and he does nothing because he feels for them (cheesy, but it's there). I mean, the film plays on Cold War fears, but just because it does that, it doesn't make it propaganda. Do you think Arachnaphobia is anti-spider? LOL

I watched it recently, and it's like a time capsule. This was made right at the close of the Cold War, at the height of the Reagan high people were on (or maybe it was the coke). I'm curious how the remake will be received, given Communist China is our bankroll right now, and they are supposed to be the bad guys in this.

The original film reminds me of my moron cousins (who are militia nutballs now) and their Dad's who stockpiled guns because they looked at this film as being a "could happen tomorrow" deal instead of a "what if". Of course, these are people who missed the point of the Rambo films as well.
