Red Dawn Remake

Well, I guess maybe on the surface, but as someone else pointed, the States and China are so economically connected at this point, it really doesn't make much of any sense outside some theoretical 'what if' kind of idea, and you can probably stretch that anyway you want it to have North Korea be a threat.

I mean, honestly, remaking Red Dawn in any context in the modern world is bound to make absolutely no sense whatsoever speaking realistically.

So this is essentially going to be Homefront: The Movie then...

The idea that economically connected countries do not fight each other is a little bit of a myth.

I agree.

True, but it's pretty doubtful they'd be any kind of full scale invasion like that considering the relationship between the two at this point. It would have to come from some psuedo-science fiction/speculative idea, like oil or water shortage, but at that point, it's probably not that large of a stretch to just go the extra mile and say X happened to Y to make them Z, really.

I guess it could be spun that N. Korea launches an all out surprise attack near the death of Kim Jung Il by using disguised airliners for a limited invasion, just to make the fighting as chaotic as possible and to make Americans tired of it enough they would put pressure to withdraw. They could invade, S. Korea, Japan, Taiwan, and other U.S. allies simultaneously too.

This has got to be one of the stupidest decisions ever to rescue a film. This film is totally irrelevant in trying to conjure up an 'enemy' for a story that's use by date was 30 years ago. The world has changed, this film is pointless.

I wish that there had been a fictional historic invasion of the U.S. like the Soviet Union during an alternate time line of World War II or German invasion of the U.S. during World War I, something much more realistic than this.

This movie was already made:

And yeah, a remake of this classic would make way more sense.

Why didn't they change things in the scripting stage?

Maybe coz China was more a 'threat' than what it actually is now, although even when it was written it was a stupid choice of enemy for the film. This was a dumb film to remake in the first place, Red Dawn is the type of film that only works when there's a genuine real life rival to play on people's fears, there is no equivalent to the USSR these days.

This movie was complete propaganda crap in the 80's. It will be the same this time around.

And it's realistic that a bunch of HS teenagers save the country?

Umm, have you ever seen Red Dawn? That is not what happens at all. All but 2 of the teenagers die, and the ones who don't run away to territory that is not occupied by the Soviets. They do not liberate their town. They simply make things difficult for the Soviets and kill their commander. As far as war movies go its probably one of the most realistic in the sense that the untrained, under-resourced, much smaller force does not really do all that much damage. They kill some people, make a stand, and then die themselves.

That's true, but it is still theoretically possible for China to invade the U.S.. North Korea....I suppose if they put some sort of opening scroll about them invading South Korea and Japan and drafting their citizens to fight and stealing their resources....but even then, that kind of occupation would take years. North Korea would never be allowed to gain the resources necessary to invade the U.S.. Its just kinda hard to swollow, IMO. China is at least possible. North Korea? They're a third world country that cannot afford electricity.

You know what? I always thought...RED DAWN was about Russians. And I...learned something today.

Tell you what folks, just order a copy of Tomorrow When the War Began from Australia, it's a similar story but is pretty entertaining.

Well, I heard from a source recently that this film is completed but they ran out of money to distribute nor had any idea how to market the movie, but all that has changed now that Chris Hemsworth is recognizable to a degree with audiences as a star now thanks to Thor. So we'll see. I hate that it's happened...I liked this better when it was just a rumor.

It's not that they ran out of money its because they trying to find a distributor for this and after MGM went bankrupt and no one will take a film where China invades the U.S. because its politically distasteful, especially because of the growing cinema market there. They don't want to hurt its international income so the Chinese elements are being edited out in post production and changed to North Korean. I'm not sure why its taking so long though. But you can expect Homefront the movie essentially.

Nobody has the balls to use China as a villain because they're not prepared or willing to live with the consequences.

I actually just read the script.

It's very mediocre. Not terrible. I think the biggest thing about it is that the original was more of a war film the script I read was just an action movie. There's really not that much of how a war psychologically affects soldiers and more importantly non soldiers

I like that in the original it didnt end on a necessarily happy note or even hopeful one. WHile (kinda spoiler) this one isnt a happy ending it's not a downer or even really that much of a bittersweet ending.

The character weren't that good either, not bad but jsut meh. Other than Jed and MAtt none of them really get that that much to do development or story wise. Jed is struggling to lead these kids and Matt searches for his gf for most of the movie, as well as learning to be less selfish. But really the other characters are mostly there to die or be love interests

As I said it's not terrible, but it's not that good, which for a remake means it's going to be blasted. The draft I read was pre Tony GIlroy so hopefully he punched up a few things.

As previously confirmed by Latino Review, FilmDistrict has picked up domestic distribution rights to Red Dawn and will release it in theaters November 2, 2012. I wonder if FilmDistrict will release the unaltered one featuring the Chinese invading the U.S., rather than digitally altering it to North Koreans.

But... man, next year will be Hemsworth overload. First Cabin in the Woods, then Avengers and now Red Dawn. It'll either make him a household name or overexposed like Jude Law did in 2004.
