They should have made it into a comedy and just have us Brit's and Canadians invade America.

Under that scenario not sure which title to go for, Fortress America The Movie or Canadian Bacon 2: This Time It's For Real.

America would be toast, man. Y'all think it 1783 and 1812 was the end of it? We've been waiting, watching and biding our time for the past 200+ years, waiting for the chance to strike!

Of course, like last time you'll have to ally with France and Spain against us, and assume part of their financial debt as well. So we win either way! Hahahahaha!

Why did I think it was late 2010 it started filming but still that is crazy to sit that long and yet hutchinson looks the exact same. brings me to the next topic, has it ever worked where a movie has sat that long on the shelf then released to capatilize on a stars success to then turn around and hit big? It reminds me of that bradley cooper/ bullock comedy that was terrible but the studio tried to capatilize on the hangover and the proposal success.

Well, in the original version of the movie, the dialogue was just the actors going "ching chong ching chong" while slanting their eyes with their fingers, so I'm sure it can just as easily pass for North Korean.

Very little of those made any sense at all other than it not being a duplicate remake. I'd also say the acting in the remake was more believable to me. Also it wasn't as corny during a lot of parts such as having "avenge me!" Which to me seeing it for the first time in 2012 was starkingly cheesy, it was better that they didn't have that. Was the original intense? Yes. A good film? Yes. But, personally liked the remake more - it just seemed to utilize everything more and had better acting, but that's just me. The notable thing was the crying in the original just... it seemed forced acting which stood out because the situations were actually desperate.

Still going with remake > original. Two different films, but - even with more of them dying on a whole it just seemed lighter or seemed lighter because some parts either became corny or were corny back in the day. It's still a good movie, mind you, and intense it just - didn't have the same impact on me as the remake did. While watching the remake I wanted to shout "we are the Wolverines!" while the original didn't quite do that to me. And I'm a big 'anarchist' lol (I believe in the founding fathers, how they fought, and what they fought for - getting the invaders out any means necessary and if it comes to it fighting to get this country back) so the original should have even had that effect on me due to the biasness lol. I'm a tar and feather guy. Remake had that, original - not as much...

Out of curousity...how old are you? I ask this because I think the age of the viewer makes a difference as to whether they think the remake is better than the original, especially if you were old enough to see the original when it first came out. I don't doubt your views...meh. It's not that big a deal to me, but I am curious to see if that might play into how people view remakes vs. the original. For my two cents, I think it does.

The first one was silly but it was 80's fun. But to recapture that schlock now with the remake, it's a fine line depending on the tone. And the remake is meh and will be forgetting in a few months.

Even if someone enjoyed this remake I can see anyone going out of their way to defend it since its a maintainer at best..

24. I think it might have to do with the times. Back then films seemed to be lighter back then in comparison to films these days.

But, I should also note I like the original Friday the 13th, Nightmare on Elm Street, and other original films from that time period.

It's just with this film - the original seemed lighter, whereas this one seemed darker. Unsure what's causing that since based on the script alone, the original should have been the darker one... the tone in the remake just seemed to fit the context of the story more. While the invading force may be less believable, the way things play out and the reactions of the characters seems more believable in the remake.

For instance, with the "avenge me!" -- isn't that a concentration camp? Why would he yell after his sons where there are guards around? Having "avenge me" just be a feeling the brothers has is more realistic to me.

As said, I thought the 80s film was fun - but liked the remake more because it seemed better suited to the scenario.

Well Red Dawn, the original, was the first PG-13 movie. I think I remember reading that Milius had to tone things down to avoid the R rating. That might be why it seems lighter in comparision to the script. I think in comparison to the films released today that receive a PG-13 rating it's pretty fair to say that times have changed.

Also, thanks for answering about the age. I was just curious. Also speaking of the original Nightmare on Elm Street, I will say this for the remake. When I watched the original movie I had no idea that Krueger was a child molester. I guess I was too young to get it, but that inclusion in the remake made that film more darker to me. I watched it with a complete grimace on my face. Considering how cartoonish the original Krueger (with Englund) became I can't see any future films based on the remake becoming that way.

Well, the RED DAWN I'd imagine this day and age using the same script as the original would be to be directed by John Hillcoat. To me it's more the mis-en-scene that was used that made it lighter which was slightly jarring since the context was darker. But, then again I think that also comes from the times because it looks like many films from back then too. As said, you could have John Hillcoat remake the film with the script and it would just feel darker.

I refuse to see the remake....

1) The idea of a secret weapon that turns the tide of the war with the Wolverines as the heroes who save the day is absolutely absurd and kind of defeats the purpose.

2) What is even more absurd is that the studio cracked to pressure from the Chinese government and instead made the frickin North Koreans the villains (North Korea cannot light their own country much less invade America). For that reason alone I refuse to see it.

I didn't even love the original but I enjoyed enough. Now that they've made the remake, I've learned to appreciate the original tremendously more, and I'm glad that the 2012 version is getting gutted by the critics and audience. It's filled with bad acting and writing.

It's a dumb movie but the action scenes are well-executed and IT IS entertaining. I think there's hate because it's a remake.
