Back in 2008, Dark Horse Comics signed a deal with Universal to bring "R.I.P.D." to the big screen with David Dobkin attached to direct and a script by Matt Manfredi and Phil Hay (who have also worked on a script for "The Boys"). Although Dobkin has since moved on from the project, another comic book movie director may step in to take his place.

Robert Schwentke — the director of Warren Ellis and Cully Hamner's "Red" — has been approached to helm "R.I.P.D," according to The Los Angeles Times. Universal reportedly wants to film "R.I.P.D." next summer to fill a hole in Ryan Reynolds' schedule, after the "Green Lantern" star agreed to do the film earlier this year.

At the beginning of this month, director Joseph McGinty Nichol (also known as McG) was reportedly the frontrunner to direct "R.I.P.D." before passing to direct the romantic comedy "This Means War" starring Sam Worthington and Reese Witherspoon.

"R.I.P.D." — which stands for "Rest In Peace Department" — was created by Matt Lunsford, Lucas Marangon and Randy Emberlin and published by Dark Horse back in 2000. The story follows a recently murdered cop named Nick Cruz who gets a chance to find his murderer in exchange for one hundred years of service as a part of the "divine law enforcement" while partnered with a gunslinger who's been dead for hundreds of years.

Dark Horse also has a number of films optioned and in development, including Steve Niles' "Freaks of the Heartland," "Umbrella Academy" and "Fear Agent."

This sounds weird but cool at the same time.

Ryan Reynolds needs to slow down. Does he expect to see his wife Scarlett Johansson at any point next year?

Zach Galifianakis in Talks for R.I.P.D.

Galifianakis is in talks to play the co-lead in the film, according to two people with knowledge of the project who were not authorized to speak publicly about it.

I love Zach and this will be an interesting pic for him.

I looked at the date this was posted and lol.

Well Red had a pretty odd ball cast and it worked out great. I say get more randoms in there! Christopher Walken as the R.I.P.D. captain, Danny Trejo as the 'older gunslinger', Nicolas Cage as the villain, go all out, I have faith in Schwentke's ability.

Zach Galifianakis no longer attached to R.I.P.D.

Zach Galifianakis is withdrawing from starring with Ryan Reynolds in the Universal Pictures supernatural comedy R.I.P.D., which Robert Schwentke will direct. Galifianakis liked the project just fine--it's about a force of undead police officers based on the Peter Lenkov comic--but scheduling just got too hairy. Galifianakis hoped to fit the film in before or after he stars with Will Ferrell in the Jay Roach-directed Southern Rivals for Warner Bros.

But there was no certainty whether those plans would fit in because Warner Bros has an option on Reynolds, who might be obliged to do a sequel to Green Lantern quickly. Galifianakis also had the complexity of his own obligation to the HBO series Bored to Death. So his participation in the undead project is dead.

Should be interesting to see this, especially with Reynolds and Bridges pairing up.

This looks interesting.I'll see this movie when it comes out.

Just read the comic. Reynolds and Bridges are perfect for these parts, but I'm sure the story will differ GREATLY from page to screen. Kevin Bacon's character isn't even in it. But I'm still excited, love the premise in general and the people attached.

I was in Boston a few weeks ago and they were filming this a block from my hotel. I got to see Jeff Bridges in his cowboy getup. Really cool. Even if this movie looks bad, I'll still go see it.

Rumor: R.I.P.D. finished editing, not looking good
3:00 PM on 02.02.2012 | Allistair Pinsof

UPDATE:
The film is not finished with post-production. While my source has completed their five months working on the film, editing may still continue.

Actor Ryan Reynolds recently said R.I.P.D. finished filming, but according to my source the film is already edited and being treated for special effects. My source described the film as a $200 million train wreck that is a Men in Black wannabe. Ouch! The film was edited for five months, which is never a good sign. They must really have been digging for decent footage or crafting a masterpiece; we'll find out which soon enough.

I won't reveal who my source is, but they were heavily involved in the film. It doesn't bode well that this person has so little faith in it, when they saw all the footage.

Here's the thing.

I don't doubt any of this. But it's worded so poorly ("Finished editing" is probably the first assembly cut of the film) and the fact is it has another 18 months for Universal to go in for reshoots (which, it should be said are a normal part of the process and should not be treated as if it never happens and automatically start the doom-and-gloom game) and potentially fix it.

I don't really buy it. Sounds too extreme for a movie so early in post-production process.

stuff like this happen on a lot of movies with big budgets. this is not meant to be news that the world will end. its just another hollywood movie with some problems. maybe they will fix it or not.

but to not buy it? whats next? Avatar had a budget under 300millions? Russel Crowe is not a jackass on sets? Bryan Singer forced WB to make Superman returns? Avi Arad forced Raimi to change Peter Parker's origin with Sandman? Man in Black 3 is not a disaster production with a budget that exploded because of Will Smith's ego? :woot::cwink:

Okay, I don't understand how this film "was edited for five months" when they were still filming in Boston in November (I was there, I saw them). Perhaps those were reshoots, but I don't think so.

in the last years technology changed. studio's start editing while they are filming.

so while filming the last 40% of the movie they can already edit footage from the first 60%.

More information on the movie.

R.I.P.D. begins in Chicago. Nick Walker (Ryan Reynolds) is a member of the Chicago Police Department who is trying to capture russian mobster Nawlicki (Robert Knepper). Him and his wife Julia (Stephanie Szostak) are having financial problems, so Nick steals a box filled of gold that he intercepted from Nawlicki and buries it in his backyard. Shortly thereafter, Nick is murdered and awakens in Limbo, where he meets Procter (Mary Louise-Parker), the director of the Rest In Peace Department (R.I.P.D.), an elite force of deceased police officers.

Procter explains that thousands of people die each day, and certain people take advantage of this to escape from moving on to the afterlife and return to Earth as ghosts, which gradually turns them into monsters. To capture those ghosts, who were often criminals when they were alive, R.I.P.D. was created. She offers Nick a place in the Chicago division of the organization, and he accepts.

Nick is partnered with Roy Pulsipher (Jeff Bridges), a gruff lawman from the 1800's who doesn't believe anyone can live up to his partner back when he was alive, Hoyt Stenson.

Nick and Roy return to Chicago, armed with advanced weapons that are able to destroy the ghosts. They have avatars, which is how living people perceive them: Two attractive women (Zoe Aggeliki and Marissa Miller).

Nick begins to investigate who killed him, and finds out it was his partner and best friend Bobby Hawes (Kevin Bacon). Hawes is working with Nawlicki, who is revealed to be a ghost that rules both the criminal underworld of "Living Chicago" and "Dead Chicago". Nick also discovers that the box of gold he stole contained St. Peter's Key, an ancient artifact that Nawlicki intents to use to raise an army of the undead and take over both worlds. And, with Nick dead, Nawlicki and Hawes target Julia, the only person who knows the location of the box.

Nick and Roy have 36h to protect Julia and prevent Nawlicki and Hawes from finding the key the Full Moon night, a day in the year where the the gates that separate the world of the living and the world of the dead is weakned, allowing for an army to cross over to our side.

How much more badass can Jeff Bridges get?

This looks like a fun movie. I'm not sure on the avatar business though, expecting some kind of Michael Bay humor with that.
