Red Sparrow (Jennifer Lawrence)

Caught a matinee due to getting out early, and it pretty much feels like Black Widow origin and Basic Instinct had a baby. And Jlaw has been doing her cardio and squats, that's all I'mma say about those...scenes.

There's more than one? Asking for a friend... :sly:

About a couple. The rest just have her in bikinis and lingerie so it's something.

my review

It's a decent spy thriller that starts off very intriguing and new, but ultimately falls into familiar territory. The movie isn't really flashy like a James Bond movie or something combooky like Salt, but it isn't a total bore like Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy. Jennifer Lawrence is essentially playing Black Widow in her origin movie only they don't hold back. They do a full rundown on how Sparrows are trained and manipulated through sex and seduction. Once they move into the main plot of the movie it does slow down a bit too long. The middle drags, but it picks back up in the last act. As for the acting, most did a good job although Jeremy Irons and Charlotte Rampling didn't even try to do a proper Russian accent. Overall, it's good spy thriller that leans more on the drama than the action.
7.5/10

If Marvel Studios really does decide to make a BW solo movie, I don't think they can do the origin story because Red Sparrow beats them to it; they should focus on her future as a spy/assassin after Avengers 4 instead.

Age Of Ultron started sowing the seeds of Natasha's pastb years before Red Sparrow was released.
It's really not a problem.

Good God. The film wasn't even good for Marvel to take notes from Red Sparrow. I expected a really cool stylish film and action heavy (never mind substance because I didn't think this would be that kind of film)and ugh. For a spy film, I was bored. I wish they just turned it into a spy school film like the earlier part of the film and have Jlaw and the others as field trainees.

Once people actually see Red Sparrow, the comparisons will stop at them being trained Russian spies. I didn't even think of Black Widow once while watching this.

Just saw it. It's not too bad but it isn't a movie I'll probably ever watch again.

It dragged at times and I'd wish there was a little more action. Keeps you guessing and paid off in the end for me.

Salt was fun. This wasn't. Its not even a popcorn flick.

'Cause yeah man, Black Widow & Red Sparrow are totally the first in the eastern-european femme-fatale thing, that's never been done before.

Granted, yeah, Kevin might have some second thoughts about it. I sort of doubt they'll get into the Namor stuff either, due to Aquaman.

They should proceed with both though.

its a spy film not an action film lol

never tried to be a popcorn action film it seems you wanted

did you even watch the trailers lol

Yes I've watched the trailers and the TV spots. And a popcorn flick means its enjoyable despite not being great. This is neither.

It was pretty decent and I was engrossed though the middle does drag a little bit, but not something I feel I need to rewatch. Jennifer Lawrence was good I thought, as was Joel Edgerton.

6.75 out of 10

5 is average on my scale

I thought this was pretty good. To me it's more satisfying, albeit not as flashy or actiony as Atomic Blonde which was pretty "style over substance", and has a nice balance of enough twists and turns to keep the viewer engaged without getting so labyrinthine that it's impossible to follow (does anybody really understand what's going on half the time in Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy?).

Lawrence is actually a good actress when she's not obviously bored out of her gourd in X-Men movies.

Also, I haven't thought they're similar in other roles, but Matthias Schoenaerts was doing his best "Mads Mikkelsen" here.

I saw Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy and I barely remember it. I do remember thinking, 'thank be that's over' when it ended and not liking it.

Yeah, I can't understand the dislike for TTSS. It may have taken a couple viewings for it to truly impress me, but even on my first watch I always thought it was at least a better than average movie. It's also got a fantastic score.

But comparing it to Red Sparrow is just nonsense, it's like apples and oranges. RS is competently made and acted, but it plays like any other spy film to me. It hits all of the typical spy cliches and the characters never come alive. It was a decent enough time at the movies (certainly better than I expected after Francis Lawrence's atrocious Hunger Games films), but there's nothing at all exceptional about it. Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy, however, is one of my favorite espionage films along with The Good Shepard, The Tailor of Panama and The Spy Who Came In From the Cold (funny how 3 of those 4 films are by Le Carre).

I saw it the other night, good film with a strong central performance, I thought Jennifer Lawrence did a good job transitioning Dominika from awkward former dancer to seductive and resourceful operative, but I think they should have shown the broader training she got instead of just focusing on the sexual aspect, we didn't see her learning spycraft or any combat training.

The supporting cast if full of quality character actors who all deliver good performances, and then there's Joel Edgerton, his general acting was fine but I wasn't buying him as this handsome, charming spy that they were trying to sell him as.

The story is a well worn story that is usually set in the cold war but brough to present day. However with most well trodden tales it's all in the telling and this is a well made film that has solid espionge plot that keeps you engaged throughout and finishes off with a decent twist.

8/10

Speaking of the twist, one thing I wondered was......
If Dominika used the $250,000 to open the account in her Uncles name as part of the set-up, how did she have the $250,000 to use in the set-up of Boucher?

Just watched this and oof, this was uncomfortable as heck.

It felt like torture porn for a lot of the run-time. JLaw takes abuse after abuse after abuse.

Overall it was good tho. JLaw is fantastic as Dominika. You can really see her growing into the role.

First she does mother! and then this one right after that clearly shows that JLaw wants challenging roles that pushes her limits and displays her range. Good for her.

Also, I finally understood why the BO was so unimpressive for this.

The pacing was slow and the movie barely has any action scenes. The movie clearly suffered from the lack of action. No wonder the WoM wasn't kind among the GA.

I've still yet to watch Red Sparrow. It's sitting on a shelf about 8 feet from me and has been since it was bought for me about 4 months ago. I liked the look of the trailers but for some reason I just haven't had the motivation to watch it yet
