My biggest gripe with his outfit is that they should've made it so that his visor could be opened hands-free. It just doesn't make sense, that in a battle, you have to find a spot free of enemies so you can free up a hand to open the visor.

How is this explained in the comics?

For the record, though he only has about seven mninutes of screentime, Cyclops doesn't actually "disappear" (I refuse to call it death) until 25 minutes into the film.

Here here! I never refer to him as dying or being killed. It's always either disappearing, being written out of the script, or being removed out of the plot.

In a way, all those promo posters of him indicating he's in the final battle are justice for the character. The fanfic writers can do the rest.

In the Ultimate series, he has something in his glove that lets him blast whatever. It was shown when a sentinal was sustaining him.

It's the same in the regular books: originally he had to press a dial on the visor (as in the movies) but they added a hidden stud/button within his gloves to control the visor later on when the writers realised all anyone had to do to negate his power was tie his hands up.

I guess with the tech on offer in the comics they could take that further and have the visor cybernetically controlled but afaik the hidden glove button is still in place.
