Respawn's New Star Wars Games

Not counting Battlefront since you can change the camera angles, I don't think I've played a Star Wars FPS since Republic Commando but if it's as fun as that game was I'm in.

We need a new Dark Forces! Hope the new FPS they are working on is a reboot of that franchise

All these titles at EA’s disposal and I still can’t believe they’ve done HD remakes of Rogue Squadron, Shadows of the Empire, etc.

TBH, I would rather a new Titanfall. That open world Ubisoft Star Wars game has me more interested than a strategy game or another FPS.

But I've been totally missing Titanfall's multiplayer lately.

See, that's where the red flags start....

I'm not gonna lie, whatever the Respawn Star Wars FPS is, I'll probably play it... But after 2 okay-ish Battlfront games, it will need a really solid hook to feel new or different. I feel like these days, most Star Wars games are shooters, space battle games or aimed at kids.

I know Ubisoft have got a mixed reputation, but The Division team are solid and given the dev time they've got on this and the size of the IP, you know there's going to be some serious money and work behind it.

That's not to say it couldn't go wrong (Anthem anyone?) but an open world co-op game in the universe is just broad and open enough to be excited by possibility. I mean Star Wars is SUCH a fun, big and exciting universe. I just want a game that gives the fun feeling of being able to explore that at my own pace again. Fallen Order gave a small part of that feeling but still felt pretty contained for me.

Just let me go chill out in a Cantina with friends then shoot the place up and cruise away on a speederrrrr :hehe:

Damn it, still no game centered on Mandalorians.

That might be the FPS game but idk.

I'm not so sure. I think a Mandalorian game would be 3rd person shooter based. What with all the different looking armors.

I still have half a suspicion that might end up being what the Ubisoft game will be. Some kinda open world Bounty Hunter game.

As one who still likes Assassin's Creed, the Ubisoft formula would go over like a lead balloon with Star Wars fans. Especially once they saw the micro-transactions.

I think that will depend on the game. Microtransactions aren't inherently bad or reviled, only when they're at the expense of gameplay. The whole Battlefront 2 debacle was more about the gameplay shortcuts and lack of other content in place of Microtransactions.

I find most Ubisoft game microtransactions to be pretty harmless. Who cares if you can pay real money for cosmetic items if a game gets consistently free and rewarding content updates?

Could be a ton of potential with that. They could tie it in with other bounty hunters they want to appear on the shows too.

Microtransactions go over extremely poorly, especially when they are placed into franchise games like Star Wars. Ubisoft's recent sales and brush with NFTs say fans are kind of done with the formula, and their attempts to monetize everything.

NFTs are a whole different kettle of fish but look at Valhalla. Their most successful game in years and it's been full of microtransactions since day one. That's what I mean with the implementation. People only tend to make a fuss if it's clear the gameplay loops are built around the microtransaction but I don't think most people care when it feels completely optional and incidental.

That put a lot of trust in Ubisoft they don't deserve.

Yeah, again, NFTs are their own beast. People are right not to trust them and Ubi's comments on them so far are wayyyyyy off the mark with what their audiences like.

But regarding microtransactions, I think it's silly when people talk about them like they're the devil. It's simply a payment model. Is there potential for them to be abused? Absolutely... But that potential to abuse a payment model for profit is the problem. It existed long before microtransactions and will continue to exist after.

There are still plenty of games that use microtransactions in a completely inoffensive way, by developers who respect their audiences. Now not saying that Ubisoft will get that right every time. NFTs in particular are worrying. But simply making the point that they've released enough games where they weren't a problem, so it doesn't mean it's gonna be an automatic loss if they're included.

Microtransactions have taken things that use to be included in games, and made them cost money. It's a very specific issue with microtransactions. Insomniac out here adding free outfits into Spider-Man years later, while Ubisoft is charging you for some fuzzy slippers.

You can't talk about the abuse of systems, look at the companies we are talking about, and expect them to not abuse said systems. They always do.

Their comments are a worrying indicator of where their heads are at. It's practically advertising the intent to scam their customers. While they've released other games without such issues, you add that to a known property like Star Wars instead of something where it's become expected like in-house series, and suddenly it's probably going to look a whole lot worse. And I'm not sure there's any reason to put faith in their restraint.
