CoR has got its problems and shortcomings, granted, but I think it's the one film in which we get to know the world of Riddick--and it is a pretty fascinating one in which the director and writers 'show' rather than 'tell'. We're a fly on a wall in what appears to be a richly layered and tangled world (Necromongers, 'mercs', Furyans, Elementals) having to make sense of it and figure it out. All of it heavily stylized and very cool looking visually. (Crematoria was really nicely done, for example.) Anyway I thought it had some impressive worldbuilding going on. And I'm usually a sucker for that.
I don't particularly disagree with any of that, I just thought it character of Riddick in the movie was a bit too soft, which they acknowledged in the 3rd movie. Plus the Necro's were not particularly interesting as villains. I preferred Vaako over LM yet the latter was supposed to be the main villain.
The very beginning on the ice world and crematoria were well done, but the other action scenes in the movie weren't too good or thrilling. I thought they made Riddick a bit too 'super' as well.
