At today's Fast & Furious junket, Vin Diesel, who is cool as **** by the way, spoke openly about his future projects. What's interesting about Vin is that you can see he is truly, truly, excited about the work he does. About how he wants it done right. And whether you like him or not, you have to respect that.

Paul (Walker) mentioned you had ideas about a Fast and Furious 5, about how it could go to Europe. Are you already thinking, after this opens, that...

Vin: Yes. Yes. I think a few pictures at a time ahead. I try to work out stories in the way I approach sequels. In that, Coppola way. I try to think out the story, even before we go to shoot the film that's at hand. So yes, I have been thinking about it. I actually brought up the idea of shooting both of the movies back to back to the President of Universal. He was like, "What? We're just getting our feet back together."

If this movie is a big hit, will it finally enable you to get Hannibal off the ground?

Vin: We hope, right? In theory, yes. To be 100% honest, I think the studio might be a little bit, and I can understand, apprehensive about giving me a budget that big to direct. So the question has been, and is what probably has held the film back from being realized, "Do I have to direct it?"

And?

Vin: I would ask you that. Do I have to direct it or, do I produce it, get my voice on it, you know, put my mojo on it, and let someone else direct it that the studio would feel comfortable with with that size budget.

The third Riddick, you've been talking about that being a Ramboesque, bare bones smaller scale Riddick. Would that close the trilogy? Or are you planning a third Riddick after that?

Vin:
I talked about Riddick as being The Fellowship in the Tolkien series. I was using Pitch Black as The Hobbit, as an independent story that introduces you to the world of Middle Earth, and then taking The Chronicles of Riddick and treating it as a trilogy that goes from the story that you saw, to the Underverse, and ultimately to Furia in the third film.

You said David is currently writing the third right now?

Vin: He's currently writing the third. It's hot. But to answer your question, about the scaled down aspect. Yes, there is a scaled down portion of this that goes back to the Pitch Black style. So if you think of Pitch Black as an introduction to the world, and you think of Lord of the Rings, and I'm just using this as a parallel, you think of it as a trilogy, you would think of Chronicles of Riddick as the first in a trilogy.

And what about reviving Xander Cage? How would they do that since they blew your scalp off?

Vin: Ha! Rob Cohen found a way to incorporate that into the story years ago, and he's just now able to implement it.

Will a XXX 3 happen you think?

Vin: Should I do it?

Ya.

Vin: That's all I need to hear!

After the junket was over, Vin still talked about Hannibal. Should he direct it? Should he let someone else do it?

He said, "If it's in service of telling a great story, Because at the end of the day, you just want to see an incredible Hannibal. And you'd hope, that even if I'm not directing it, all of the work, the development that's been put into it will shine and that you will see that, and that it will speak to you. And the message and the integrity behind the story, and the passion that I've held on to, and that you know has driven me in the hope of telling that story, is present. The question is, how can I maintain that, and make a studio feel comfortable."

What is Hannibal?

I'm not so sure we need another F&F. atleast not in europe. I'm a big fan of the series but hopefully this one ends it properly.

I have been waiting to see Vin Diesel's Hannibal for about five or six years now. And I would be the first guy in the theater for another Riddick movie.

Hannibal of Carthage, who led the war against Rome. Read it up online or at a library. Interesting part of history.

And "technically" it wouldn't end it "properly," since Fast & Furious is a prequel to Tokyo Drift. We still don't know for sure whether it's a sequel or prequel to 2 Fast 2 Furious yet.

Hes not getting any younger he should get his act together and make these films or he wont be doing **** all with his mini comeback

I kinda feel sorry for Vin Diesel. He seems to love film and acting. He is always referencing Coppola and Scorscese and the greats. He is clearly a student of film and is just so damn passionate. The problem is...well...he's just not very good at it. :csad:

I'd really like to see Vin's Hannibal movie happen, but he'd be wise to relinquish the directing reigns and collaborate with someone like Ridley Scott or maybe Mel Gibson.

I'm only interested in the third Riddick. Hopefully it happens.

i will always have a soft spot for Vin for Iron Giant and Pitch Black..

I've caught **** for it in the past, but I've always really liked Vin Diesel, starting from Pitch Black and Boiler Room. I also thought he did a great job breaking his usual character type in Find Me Guilty.

I definatly like to see them expand the Riddick Universe more.

i like Vin diesel he's a likable guy.

he's good in the flicks he's in even if there not always good.

you have to give credit to Vin.

Its not his fault that most people only want to see him in action movies,
when in reality Vin himself would be happy doing other types of film.

Unfortunately, the public will only accept him it seems in these action roles.

So I guess Vin going back to the Fast & Furious franchise to maybe get his other projects off the ground is a good move.

And hopefully, since this has got all the original main cast, it should definitely be a decent movie.

I still don't think Vin should do another XXX movie. One was enough I think, and even Rob Cohen and Vin though so too, otherwise why would they not do it?

Its probably true that he is thinking of doing another XXX movie to get other projects off the ground, and if it works, fair play to the guy.

He is actually a good actor given the right material.
A Man Apart, Boiler Room were good movies.

Ouch, that's cold...

I wonder if Vin is on these boards...

heres a funny tidbit, Kamal from the Jerky boys grew up with Vin, and now Kamal is a director and recieved praise from his film by Coppola!

I think the biggest problem is his physical type. There are some actors like Christian Bale (yes, I know he gets brought up way too much but this is one case where I can't think of a better example) who are willing to drastically alter their physical appearance to play a role. We've seen Bale as a muscle-bound action here (Batman films, Equilibrium), a freakishly thin schizophrenic (The Machinist), and an average joe (Laurel Canyon).

Diesel, however, regularly keeps up his bodybuilder physique. He did gain weight for Find Me Guilty, but other than that, his build fits the mold of "action hero" and that is why it's so tough to picture him as anything else. The Rock has the same problem, to some extent.

This isn't necessarily his fault (you can' blame a guy for staying in shape) but unfortunately, it's going to continue to cost him roles that he might feel that he can play. However, like Matt said... he may not really be talented enough for those roles. I'm still on the fence about his ability.

Since my minor is ancient history, I've always wanted to see a good movie based on Hannibal. Yet I kinda think some one else should take the reigns. I don't know if Vin would take it seriously as it should be taken.

I hope to God they can get another one, possibly 2 Riddick movies made, the DC of COR was a great sci-fi movie and I'm dying to see were they would take the story next.

I think I've enjoyed playing "Butcher Bay" more than watching any of Vin's films, maybe he should quit his day job and stick to making video games:cwink:.

I always thought he could be doing better. I hope Hannibal gets off the ground soon because I'm not excited for XXX 3 .

The problem is, if Scott or Gibson were to direct it, it would be heavily dramatic...and I'm not sure Diesel would be the actor they want in the role.

Ouch, that's cold...

I wonder if Vin is on these boards...

Are you him? :cwink:

And I don't mean to be cold...I suppose what I'm saying is, he should stick to his talents. Quit chasing Coppola, and start chasing Stallone.

I couldnt agree more, not a great actor, but he can pull off characters like Riddick. Hannibal would be too much for him i think.
