So after years of being FB friends I had the audacity to politely call out Liefeld on his character "Smash" being the most blatant character copy I've ever seen.
(Google "Liefeld smash", it's the Hulk with purple skin and the name is even taken from Hulk's tag line)
At that point Liefeld said he has people he can have intelligent conversations with online. Reality is up until today I've only ever seen him respond to people who talk about how great everything he does is.
Pretty pathetic.

Who are these people and what are they smoking? I mean it's almost a cliche to bash Liefeld, but the fact is he's truly that terrible.

So Rob Liefeld is the most insecure man in comics? I'm not really surprised by that. I wouldn't lose any sleep over it.

He has done a lot for creators' rights, but, his artwork is terrible. He has no understanding of anatomy and his work is sloppy. Yet, he managed to sell $125 variant covers, so I give him points for being able to pull one over the buyers. It takes skill making someone pay a crapton of money for crap.

But... it's the Hulk. He's inverted the colors of grey hulk by giving him purple skin and grey pants. Make any picture of it black and white then mix it in with hulk pictures and I'd bet almost anyone, including leifeld, couldn't tell them apart. Except for the feet maybe.

nuh uhhhhh
he's got long hair now!
and sometimes a chain!!! ooooooooo, mmmhm mhm

and here he is being totally different and fighting rip-off Captain America(who has a batman symbol on his shield, for some reason):

And the Not-Caps sidekick totally isn't the female Bucky from Heroes Reborn.

Hahahhahaha that's COOL dude blocked you! Too bad though cause you could have asked him about his " pouch fetish" ohh you cheeky Random causing havoc you! Seriously if you can't handle crictism you probably shouldn't be in the public eye! Hahaha dude cold Youngblood blocked you! Hehe

Yeah, and it proves once and for all the Liefield clearly did not receive any formal art education
Every one of my classes (especially studio classes) had a heavy focus on peer critique, discussion, and even reasonably defending your choices.

If you don't have a thick skin about your art, you ain't making it through art school

Agreed. I think it's just people who are willing to ignore his blatant copying and art problems so they can converse with a quasi celebrity

I believe that's an eagle on his shield 'CAUSE MURICA!

I've read that before and I'll probably read it again but I agree with the entire list and it hurts to look at his drawings for too long. I refuse to call it art when he's had 20+ years to fix the goddam feet.

wait a min!! thats suppose to be an EAGLE ON THAT SHIELD!!! Hahahaahha Hollleeeeee cow

that deserved that! hahaha

SO MANY POUCHES!!!

Those links make my head hurt. :(

......never liked the guy's style.

I remember seeing that the first time and thinking it was a cross between Bats and Cap lol

He didn't get a formal art education. He took a few art classes at a junior college and his friends encouraged him to submit to DC and Marvel. Ironically, he was too nervous to do so until he and a friend went to a convention and both DC and Marvel were overall intrigued to see what he can do.

His first published job was at DC where they wanted to keep Liefeld and train him to improve his artwork particularly with page layouts and anatomy. They saw him as a young man with a lot of potential and was young enough to be molded into a great artist with the proper training.

Then Marvel came along offered him some jobs and basically told him he didn't need to change a thing. They gave him a stint on New Mutants which turned a low selling book into a massive success and launched X-Force which was also another huge success.

When a comic book publisher tells you that you don't need to change a thing and then is boosted by HUGE success, that is going to have a big impact on the ego of a young artist in his late teens/early 20's. I honestly kinda pity the man because he could have been as fondly viewed upon as Jim Lee if a certain publisher didn't let his ego run rampant and let success run to his head.

This is hilarious reading.
Hell yeah it is! i almost choked on my diet coke reading that! like this..
"A fun Liefeld drinking game: take a shot for every pouch he draws on a character. Oh great, now you have alcohol poisoning."
MANNNN! I WOULD BE DEAD IF I DID THAT! hahahahahah

I remember seeing that the first time and thinking it was a cross between Bats and Cap lol
i am completely stunned by that! it totally looks like Batman's symbol! i was like WOW!!
I am also stunned that i spent my good money on his X-force looking thru these! what the Hell....<that's for me!
cause i really should've been smarter back then! geez Louise! I helped build that dude's mansion!!! Damn!

He did make a damn good career of drawing like ****. He's richer than everyone here.

Except maybe Sam Jackson.

But X-Force was the launch pad for his fame.

Maybe if he were artistically reigned in or drew for a lesser comic he might've been lost in the crowd like so many artists.

Full disclosure:

I loved the first New Mutants comics that introduced Liefeld.

I lost interest when he started doing Image comics.

When it comes to crafting characters, he's no Stan Lee.

I think that if he were artistically reigned in, he would have a career that would be much more fondly remembered. Marvel and DC saw potential in the guy right away for a reason.
