Robotech is on the way!

There's always going to be tough competition for a summer release. Iron Man had to go up against Narnia, Speed Racer, and Indiana Jones and it weathered all those storms. Before Iron Man came out he was a b-list character and not an icon, so apparently there was no way the movie could be as popular as it did.

I have to agree but Speed Racer bombing had nothing to do with being based on anime but the fact that it looked cheesy and was UNABASHLY based on an anime, it practically shoved it in your face so that it seemed less like a movie and a fan homage to the show... If Robotech or Gundam was done in a realistic manner that rely more on being a movie than being based on an anime I feel it'd do pretty well.

Indeed. I kind of get the sense that Gundam is such a rich universe to explore. I personally think if one did Gundam Wing it could be the most popular direction to take it as it could be a trilogy about war and peace and have the scope of LOTR but the visuals of TF meets Star Wars. Then again you coulddo something low-key like 08th MS Team which is the only one that could easily translate into a single film and that is a very Vietnam-ish sci-fi story.

Robotech could be interesting and has a very STar Wars type feel. The trick is to do something that takes itself seriously as a movie and is just not an exercise in SFX as Speed Racer was and for that matter, 300. Make it a good movie as well.

Emile Hirsh should be Rick Hunter.

I don't think he'll be doing any mainstream movies for a while. It's back to the indie circuit after Speed Racer.

Big-screen 'Robotech' lands scribes

Alfred Gough and Miles Millar have been drafted to pen "Robotech," Warner Bros.' adaptation of the anime classic.

Akiva Goldsman and Chuck Roven are producing with Tobey Maguire and Drew Crevello.

"Robotech" was a 1980s cartoon series from Harmony Gold USA and Tatsunoko Prods. It was re-edited and re-dialogued to combine three Japanese anime series to give the producers enough episodes to air as a daily syndicated series.

A sprawling sci-fi epic, "Robotech" takes place at a time when Earth has developed giant robots from the technology on an alien spacecraft that crashed on a South Pacific isle. Mankind is forced to use the technology to fend off an alien invasion, with the fate of the human race ending up in the hands of two young pilots.

Lawrence Kasdan wrote a previous draft. Warners is intent on keeping the project moving forward, and Gough and Millar bring action and geek cred to the table. The WMA-repped duo worked on "The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor" and "Spider-Man 2," among other films, and were showrunners on TV's "Smallville" for many years.

Frank Agrama of rights-holder Harmony Gold is executive producing "Robotech," as is Jason Netter.

..terrible idea, if you ask me

These dudes are hacks, so unless someone comes along and cleans up whatever mess of a draft they end up penning, this movie is screwed.

I don't really feel good about the Mummy 3 and Shanghai Noon/Knights people doing Robotech.

Now this is a really big part of my childhood, so.. beware! whoever make this! I'm watching :hehe:

I'm not that big of a fan of the source, but I feel it could make for an entertaining movie and could lead the way to Gundam.

With that said Tobey Maguire producing and LAWERANCE KASDAN writing the screenplay made this a very interesting project. Now, it is being written by the guys who gave us Smallville and Mummy 3?

Well, it can join the ranks of Speed Racer and Dragonball. One day, Hollywood will do an anime adaptation right and find their "next big thing."

I guess I'm going to be pissed off for the next couple of months. Couldn't the WB come up with better writers than these guys. Who knows? Maybe these guys will surprise us and finally write a good script. At least Kasdan wrote a draft that may be edited sparingly.

It will be interesting what Spielberg does with Ghost in the Shell, and there is still Akira. Hollywood is starting to make a push for Manga/anime adaptions, I'm sure they will get it right at some stage. After showing the world Transformers, they have an idea of giant robots, so lets hope they don't screw this.

So basically this is Transformers vs Independence Day??? So I guess a hybrid film is something audiences haven't seen yet... :whatever:

Robotech has the potential to be a truely epic saga, along the lines of Star Wars or Lord of the Rings. Hell, if done right it could become the new Star Wars in a sense. The whole Macross story can't be fleshed out in one film, and I hope thats one thing that anyone working on this understands right away. If I had my way, I'd have it deal with things up to right after Dolza's fleet is defeated and Khyron retreats.

For sequels, I'd set it up this way:

2 - Khyron's attack through the end of The Sentinels animated film. Leaving a cliffhanger with the SDF-3 departing and the oncoming threat of the Robotech Masters.

3 - Masters/Southern Cross storyline. Again, have the film end in either a climax, or rather, for those who don't know anything about Robotech, the Invid invasion and near total destruction of earth. Have it seem that things are going to be ok and worked out with the Masters, or victory be achieved, then have the Invid just come in a **** everyone up without warning.

4 - Next generation storyline intertwined with the propsed Sentinels series (not film) storyline. This could potentially tie into The Shadow Chronicles, or go into a 5th film based on the Shadow Chronicles, giving an opportunity to have its sequel become a live action film if it doesn't move ahead in production.

I sure do hope that they consult Carl Macek at some point though (despite what some may think of him).

I could go on and on and really flesh things out, but that could take me a while and would be a crapload of text.

Spielberg I doubt is actually going to direct Ghost In The Shell.

I agree. Is this is a fox movie? I expect such decisions to be made by fox. If this aint fox movie then whatever studio this is being made at should be destroyed.

If WB had this they would have gotten awesome screenwriters.

It is a WB movie.

I really don't like Gough and Millar on this. I don't think they are trustworthy for the material. Most of their feature work has been awful.

I think the best material to use for a script would be the Jack McKinney novels of the Macross saga.

i think someone else will come in to do a rewrite. mark my words.

man, this is another movie that's just stuck in development hell.
