Robotech is on the way!

I'm sure he is. But hollywood is so inconsistent, it's not funny. They can greenlight a movie within months, but sit on another project for years.

It's like how Tobey's buddy Leonardo DiCapro is producing over 10000000 projects right now. And maybe out of the 100000, one might get into active production in the next year.

Thats true.

Akira got announced then stuck then it got labeled as having no direction and that Appian Way/WB were still planning stuff but making sure they had the right script.

Then recently they said its not dead and they are definitely working on it.

So yeah, like you pointed out its pretty flakey business due to various factors that slow down these projects.

I'm worried about how this will be received (if it ever comes out) after District 9. The lines from the TV spots upon aliens arriving is so reminiscent of the first episode, and along with D9's visuals I feel that Robotech just doesn't have the chance to make as big of an impact as it could now.

Until I see the actors in costume is when I'll start believing that a Robotech movie is on the way, these rumors have been going on for years now.

I'm not holding my breath.

I've already given up on the Shadow Chronicles sequel.

It was announced that Warner Bros and Tobey Maguire would be developing a Robotech movie/movies as a tent pole sci-fi franchise. Not new knews, however fans of Robotech also want to continue the animated universe similar to how Transformers has both it's Movie-verse while also maintaning it's G1 continuity via comics and cartoons.

Harmony Gold(Robotech's owners) did create The Shadow Chronicles movie, however production of that started in early 2002 and it was completed prior to 2006 but not released until ealry 2007. Now they have announced The Shadows Rising and many expected it to be out already. With Harmony Gold's inablilty to communicate with fans and offer anything other than Kevin McKeever's vague less is more stories and repeating the same two year old information at every convention, do you see either of these movies comming to fruition given harmony Gold's past track record with the franchise?

Yeah, but I'd rather not have Maguire involved, and don't want the Smallville writers doing the script. I have no problem with HG considering the Shadow Chronicles, or at least elements from it, were conceived of back in the late 80s before they lost their funding. It was covered slightly in a few comics, but I'm glad they are (trying to) bring it to film. As far as a real life film goes, I say get a director that knows what they're doing (Peter Jackson or someone similar), get good writers who understand just how deep Robotech can be; that it has the potential to be the Star Wars for a new generation (no pun intended), keep the same score/mindset of music but modernize it ever so slightly, and at the least involve Carl Macek as a consultant.

Without this happening, I'd say Robotech as a major film is doomed along the lines of Dragonball.

poor Tobey. Why would it bad if he got involved?

I wouldn't mind him financing and producing (with a controlled say), but anything beyond that wouldn't be good IMO (especially if he were considering portraying a role, I don't see who he would be fit to play).

either way, I can't see this project going anywhere at this point. maybe in a couple of years.

Think about it: WB has their DC movies and The Hobbit to deal with for the next decade.

True, and I don't feel Robotech is something you can just bang out. My stepbrother is an independent director and it is his dream to direct a Robotech film, and given his knowledge and love of the material, I'd want his dream to come true. Covering the whole series is also something that needs to be worked out from the get go, and that would be daunting in and of itself. I fear we either get a really *****y film ala Dragonball or no film at all.

With all the legal issues this film is destined to A) never be close to what fans want and what should be, and B)FAIL

I'm giving up on it already.

In development at the studio for quite some time, Warner Bros. Pictures appears to have found a director for their live-action adaptation of the anime classic Robotech. The Hollywood Reporter brings word that commercials director Nic Mathieu is now in talks to helm.

"Robotech" was a cartoon series during the 1980s from Harmony Gold USA and Tatsunoko Productions. It was re-edited and re-dialogued to combine three Japanese anime series to give the producers enough episodes to air as a daily syndicated series.

A sprawling sci-fi epic, Robotech takes place at a time when Earth has developed giant robots from the technology on an alien spacecraft that crashed on a South Pacific isle. Mankind is forced to use the technology to fend off three successive waves of alien invasions. The first invasion concerns a battle with a race of giant warriors who seek to retrieve their flagship's energy source known as "protoculture," and the planet's survival ends up in the hands of two young pilots.

Writers on Robotech over the years have included Alfred Gough, Miles Millar and Lawrence Kasdan. There's no word yet on whether or not additional talent will be brought in for a rewrite after Mathieu signs on.

Akiva Goldsman, Joby Harold, Tobey Maguire, Matthew Plouffe and Tory Tunnell are attached to produce.

So the fact that they got a director lined up means they want to capture whatever Pacific Rim gets them this summer, if anything.

After watching some of the commerical by this director, it's still hard to gauge him as a talent. Sure his commercials looked fine - if not a little generic - but that's all I got from them. The question is, can he tell a story?

I just watched Robotech: Live Love Alive. It's kind of like Danna's Story back in the first episode of the Robotech Masters, but covering the New Generation from Lancer's perspective. I thought it was going to have a lot of new footage, but it didn't. It's slight saving grace is the first 5-10 minutes or so that does include some new footage, bridging the 2nd and 3rd generation a little more. Also, we see Dana for a brief moment which rocked. I hope this makes Harmony Gold enough money to produce the sequel to The Shadow Chronicles that's been rumored for way too long.

Also, WB needs to get off their asses and make Robotech!

But that is not all! As I mentioned before Leonardo DiCaprio was up for a role in Star Wars but passed. He passed because he wants to do a project that is being developed and that project is…

“Robotech”

Can we take anything seriously from Latino Review?

Harmony Gold says a director named Nic Mathieu is attached to do it. He comes from a commercial background.

Hard to believe a studio would go with him on a project such as this especially with a huge budget, but who knows.

Again we'll see. A movie like this isn't going to be cheap. It would be comparable to something like Pacific Rim. Frankly, the scale and scope of Robotech as a story is bigger than Pacific Rim as well with even more characters, battles, being set in space, etc. You don't just have the Veritechs, but the Zentraedi and their battle pods and the SDF-1.
