Roger Moore Sucked In "For Your Eyes Only."

I've never liked Moore as Bond. He always came off to me like an old creep (a la Hugh Hefner) picking up young girls.

Connery's rogue gallery had. Red Grant, Dr. No, Largo, and Goldfinger. Blofeld is a mixed bag as he was only good when Donald Pleasence played him and sucked in Diamonds Are Forever.

Add Rosa Klebb ("She had her kicks") to Connery's rogues gallery. And Oddjob.

How is FYEO faithful to the short story?

FYEO is essentially a combination of two short stories (FYEO and Risico) with that missile command system used as a way to tie up both plots. It's as faithful as a 2 hour movie based on short stories can be.

He stole Jane Seymour's virginity in Live and Let Die. :o

If you say so, the Havelocke's deaths and a couple characters thrown in do not a faithful adaptation make.

How would you have adapted FYEO differently? There's a lot of Fleming in it. Two or three short stories and even the keelhauling section from Live and Let Die. As a Fleming fan are you disappointed with the movie?

As a Fleming fan I'm disappointed with all the movies. Just like I'm pissed that the climax of LALD ended up in FYEO.

How would I have adapted it, simple, don't. Make up a completely new story that has nothing to do with the book like TSWLM. Which I never got by the way, like using the character Horror, but making him weaker and less scary and changing his name to Jaws.

Certain things should have stayed as short stories rather than half assing an adaptation that pretty much ruins a couple of stories in one go. Way more offensive to me than ruining just a single book.

Moore had some pretty memorable villains IMO. I'd say it was after the Moore era that the villains decline. The only REALLY memorable ones after Moore's era are Alec Trevelyan and Renard.

Blasphemy! Franz Sanchez from "Licence to Kill" is one of the greatest Bond villains of all time!

Even From Russia with Love and On Her Majesty's Secret Service? Or adaptations that improved on the novel like Goldfinger? What about Thunderball which was always intended to be a movie?

What? "For Your Eyes Only" is Moore's second best Bond film after "The Spy Who Loved Me". He was fine in it. His worst performance has to be in "A View To A Kill". But that could also be because he was pushing 60 then.

What's the deal with sourface in the top right corner?

The Goldfinger thing is subjective, I really enjoy that book and the meeting in NY is some tense stuff that the movie never matched. The scene in the airport with Bond reminiscing about his last mission is in a word priceless. The movie had a better ending but the book was a more fun ride.

Thunderball's a whole other issue itself, lawsuits, falling outs, two adaptations, a whole other book explaining the controversy. It's an interesting bit of literary and film history all tied in one.

She's a MAN baby! :awesome:

And i'm not even kidding.

"For Your Eyes Only" is Moore's second best Bond film after "The Spy Who Loved Me".

The Spy Who Loved Me is the only Moore film I'm entirely satisfied with.

Live and Let Die is ridiculous. I'm gonna re-watch The Man with the Golden Gun tomorrow on Encore, but I re-call thinking it was stupid as a result of that annoying Bond girl, the return of Sgt. JW Pepper, and ruining an awesome car stunt with cartoon sound effects. Moonraker is TSWLM but with a space theme. FYEO has a great script, great direction, great action scenes, but is ruined by Moore's un-inspired performance. The first half of Octopussy is a snooze-fest while the second-half is awesome. A View to a Kill, I hate to say it, is one of my guilty pleasures. Roger Moore is WAY too old and all his scenes are cringe-worthy as a result, but I still find the movie to be a lot of fun...like the second-half of Octopussy.

he was pushing 60 then.

Moore should have left after Moonraker. He had no business in any of those `80s movies. One could say that Timothy Dalton should have done all those films, but based on the Octopussy screentests it seems like James Brolin was someone that the producers had in mind.

I like FYEO a lot, but there has never been a satisfying conclusion to Tracy's murder IMO. DAF addressed it without addressing it as did FYEO. The fact that they did YOLT out of order and made it so silly really messed the whole series up. OHMSS is my favorite non Connery Bond film and the fact that it has never gotten a proper follow up that was in it's class is a shame.

And despite how silly THWTGG is overall, Lee was beyond awesome in it. I think he was the best actor to play a villain in the Bond series.

DAF addressed it without addressing it as did FYEO.

Atleast FYEO addressed Tracy by name. In DAF, Bond is angry without explanation. We just ASSUME he's getting revenge. License to Kill also addressed Tracy during Felix's wedding scene. That's one of the reasons why Bond takes the murder of Felix's wife so seriously. He can relate to Felix's pain.

I think the biggest missed opportunity of the whole series was YOLT since it's the real conclusion of the Tracy arc. But we never got that, neither did we get the Garden Of Death or Shatterhand or that great ending. Doing them out of order and removing the connective tissue just served to make the movies silly. Whats the motivation in a revenge story when you remove all references to the original offense?

Yes and it was also mentioned in TSWLM that Bond had been married, but there never has been a real proper film done where Bond's objective was to avenge Tracy's death and to get Blofeld once and for all. They never mentioned her in DAF and Bond acted like he was having a party for most of the movie (it is Moore's Bond before Moore started as Bond IMO), and they couldn't call Blofeld by name in FYEO plus it was not the badass sequence that it should have been.

Agreed completely. It's a real shame and the only Bond movies that I could ever stomach being remade is the Blofeld trilogy just so it could be done correctly.

speaking of Bond, with MGM in financial troubles it's already been announced that we won't be getting a new Bond film any time soon

it's also rumored that Craig will probably not come back

if that's the case, who would you guys like as the new Bond?

that British dude that came out in Bend It Like Beckham, Mission Impossible 3, and currently stars in Tudors would be a pretty cool Bond i think

So I guess you didn't hear that MGM has backing again and all systems are go.

I liked Moore in FYEO...:(

He definitely wasn't the best Bond though...

Oh but you're wrong. He WAS the best. Best villains. Best gadgets. Best women.

It's hard to follow a legend like Connery but he did and saved the franchise. Hell he even had to go up against Connery the same summer with Octopussy VS Never Say Never Again.

I love Moore and The Man With The Golden Gun is the best. View to a Kill not far behind. Oh and there's always Live and Let Die. Love Solitaire.

Anywho... I'm rambling. Moore rulez! And not enough people know how badass his universe was.

:doom: :doom: :doom:

I did really enjoy Moore, except I think Brosnan is my favorite Bond.

I liked 1 or 2 of Moore's films, but Dalton remains #1 for me.

I really liked Moore in The Spy Who Loved Me. But I don't think anybody 'got' the part better than Sean Connery. Dalton had potential but didn't make much of an impact. Brosnan I found to be unlikeable. Lazenby was a bit too young and cheeky. And Craig was good in Casino Royale, but Quantum Of Solace made me dislike the way he was taking the character.

Casino Royale was the first Bond film I had ever seen, and later on I decided to get into the franchise, starting with Dr. No. One thing I noticed from watching these movies one after another is that as soon as Connery left the Bond character changed. Somehow he went from this rough, yet charming, business-like agent with a sense of humour to a super-slick action hero with a quip for every situation.

And yet despite this, I do like Moore. I haven't seen his wackier installments like Moonraker yet, but early Moore was actually kind of good. He overplayed the jokes but the character had already began to change by then.

I haven't read the novels and don't really see them as the same character so I don't really care which one is the most faithful or not.
