Roger Moore Sucked In "For Your Eyes Only."

According to interviews with Christopher Lee...he says from what he knows of Fleming's intentions of how Bond should be (lee was Fleming's cousin, and they spoke of Bond many times) that Pierce Brosnan was the closest to his vision of Bond.

Agreed. I really think the bad Moore films would be less bad or less campy looking with Dalton. Dalton just comes off as less of a joke than Moore.

That's sort of what happens when your ideal way of getting rid of a bad guy is setting him on fire. And then blowing him up for good measure.

Hmm...Christopher Lee knew everyone, didn't he? ;) Wouldn't have figured Brosnan for Fleming's choice.
Makes me wish he'd gotten the part of Gandalf in LOTR.

Just makes you wish That the last few Moore films or 1st few Brosnan films were done by Dalton

Dalton was actually approached twice for the role of Bond. Also, Goldeneye was originally written for him, then when it became apparent that they would have a new Bond it was rewritten less harsh.

The Christopher Lee thing is great. He was Ian's cousin and was one of Ian's original picks for Bond, the other being Cary Grant. I'm sure Christopher Lee has a high opinion of Peirce, he is a cool dude, but he doesn't have that Hoagy Carmichael vibe Fleming initially described Bond as having in CR ("He looked something like a young Hoagy Carmichael with an unruly comma of black hair above his right eye and a thin white scar down his right cheek.") There's more to the description, about eyes and mouth and all, but I'm lazy now. http://static.ajb007.co.uk/assets/media/2008/04/hoagy_carmichael2.jpg http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_R3OsLYH5JAc/SYDrvrwrTZI/AAAAAAAAASk/VRifj_JwP14/s320/Dalton.bmp

It's funny how if you look at that picture of all the Bonds together, along with pictures of Lee, Grant and Fleming himself, they all look like they could be related. They all have a common quality, like a bunch of cousins.

I think Chris Lee was referring to the performance. Pierce Brosnan is the pretty boy Bond, so clearly, that's not what Fleming had in mind. In the books, Bond tends to be a bit of a British snob, which of course is a reflection of Fleming himself. Brosnan's Bond wasn't a snob per say (none of the movie Bonds were) but since he's the only one who looks like a catalog model it kinda gives off that vibe.

You do know that George was a model right?

George Lazenby is Australian, so there's nothing British snob about him. Pierce Brosnan is the only Bond who was convincing as the guy who spents all his nights at the casino with rich people and drinking Martini's. The rest seem like the type of men who drink beer and watch soccer games.

Except Craig.

Craig is the type of a guy who..isn't super ugly, but average. Or maybe an aquired taste. But he makes it up with talent.

Otherwise, without Bond, he probably would be stuck doing bit roles. I mean, he was good in Road to Petition, but I've felt he probably would have played more characters like that (sleezy) if he didn't do Casino Royale.

Look at him now: he's a leading man in 'Cowboy & Aliens' and 'The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo'.

I remember when I 1st saw Dalton as Bond thinking..........cool its that cool British dude that played Prince Barin in Flash Gordon

Except Craig.

I don't think he stands out that differently from the rest. Sure hair color is different but he's got the Bond signposts for the most part. Grey raptor eyes, cruel mouth, you could imagine that wrinkle as the scar down his right cheek. He's missing the black hair, but so was Moore. He's not as thin in the face as Bond is described, but neither was Sean. He's different, but not nearly as different as people present him as.

He's Austrailian? Really?:wow: LOL.

You said Brosnan was the only one who looked like a model, I was pointing out that Laz was a model, his country of origin has no bearing on that, he played a British character. Moore was also a model too.

I think Roger Moore was great in his earlier Bond films, like The Spy Who Loves Me and For Your Eyes Only. It is his later films like Moonraker, Octopussy, and A View To A Kill where Moore began to suck.

egh hem Moonraker was before For Your Eyes Only:fhm:

Dalton looks most like Hoagy Carmichael

How many in here have seen Barry Nelson as Bond?

I didn't ask if he counted or not (his being a live ane hour TV performance, you really can't put it up against a multi-million dollar movie)...I asked if anyone had seen him play Bond. I first had his show on VHS tape and now have it on DVD...seen it several times. It's interesting...and I was wondering how many people in here have ever seen it.

I love bond films but never have seen this TV Barry Nelson movie... is it any good?

btw where is the James Bond movie thread/topic is there one?

It was live one hour TV play in the late 50's adapting the story CASINO ROYAL. Barry Nelson played the American secret agent Jimmy Bond...and Peter Lorre was the bad guy.

Being a live telecast, it was primarily on 2 sets (the gambling room and Bonds hotel suite)....by todays standards it's pretty mediocre...but as a Bond fan it's an interesting piece of his history to watch.

It can be found on DVD either by buying the David Niven copy of CASINO ROYAL (it's part of the extras) or it can be found on a cheap companies label for around a dollar in bargain bins.

I don't think anyone can "be" the novels Bond. It's just like Batman, a straight adaption is impossible...

The novels are too awesome, btw...

Im 25 now some of my earliest memories were watching For Your Eyes Only with my dad on VHS taped off TV... after that intro with Blofeld I remember everytime we would drive somewhere and go over a bridge my dad would say "Its a long way down Mr Bond" in a sinister voice... then when I was like 12 I got really into the game Goldeneye so my dad who is a massive Bond fan bought me all the movies on VHS for my my birthday.. best gift i've ever gotten to this day. (Now i got them all on dvd of course)

Then a few weaks later he came home from a flea market with like six original 60's pan books prints of Ian Fleming Bond novels. Casino Royale, Moonraker, The Spy Who Loved Me, Thunderball, You Only Live Twice & Diamonds Are Forever. Those were the first novels I enjoyed reading before that it was all comic books for me, Sad thing is I've yet to dive into the rest of the Ian Flemind Bond novels... I really want to pick up Live and Let Die & OHMSS... Maybe I will on Friday any suggestions on which are the best besides the 6 I have?
