Roland Emmerich Planning Battle of Midway Movie

I just got home from watching it.Very good movie. The CGI battles were excellent. I'm a WWII history buff, so I know a lot about the war in the Pacific. For the younger generation who know nothing bout it....this explains it. It starts out 4 years before the attack on Pearl Harbor and cover the strategies and battles leading up to the battle of Midway.

This sounds promising. When history buffs are happy, that's usually a good sign.

As a history teacher, I liked it a lot.

I *did* chuckle at everyone doing the throwback American accents from the 40’s. The Jonas brother doing it was kind of expected, but seeing Ed Skrein go full 40’s Yankee was hilarious.

It's pretty cool Emmerich financed this independently. Except even if this is number one, this cost over a hundred mil. I could see this being a sleeper over the holidays as an alternative to Frozen or something like that where this brings out a lot of older crowds.

Skrien's accent felt like it came and went and even changed region throughout the movie.

The movie itself was a typical fun popcorn movie.

Only one that stood out to me was Patrick Wilson.

I saw this today (yup it's still playing in first-run theaters!) and thought it was pretty good for a WW2 film. It felt fairly standard as far as these types of movies go, but it helped that the aerial action scenes were one of the best things about it. The aerial scenes were extremely well-shot, often using a first-person perspective for the bombers when they were diving, that made them really immersive. Definitely a movie that benefits from being seen on the big screen!

All of the actors were good in their roles, but for whatever reason the ensemble cast just kinda stuck out to me as a bit odd—the combo of Patrick Wilson, Woody Harrelson, Luke Evans, Dennis Quaid, Aaron Eckhart, and particularly Nick Jonas sorta took me out of the movie.

I honestly hope there isn't going to be a trend of current pop singers trying to transition over to acting because it kinda seems like that's trying to be a thing, with recent & upcoming movies like Dunkirk (Harry Styles), Yesterday (Ed Sheeran), Midway and Jumanji (Nick Jonas), and Cats (Taylor Swift). Keep the pop singers out of the movies I say, because a lot of these people aren't good at acting! Styles was ok in Dunkirk, but the less said about the others the better.

Singers transitioning to acting has been a thing for years though.

Yup I know Nick Jonas was in both of the recent Jumanji movies, and IMO he only works in those because it's a gaming-based virtual world. His appearance in Midway took me out of the movie.

IDK, seeing currently-popular singers appear in movies just takes me out of the movie, especially given how much we can see of them online (and on TV through the media) nowadays, especially whenever they release a new song.

Nick Jonas has been acting since 2008. If you have spent any decent mount of time watching movies of various genres and various decades of film making, you would see that current celebs from music, sports, etc have been used in movies since the silent era. It's something that has been done for around 110 years.

Nick Jonas is a nothing actor so it doesn’t really matter if he’s been “acting” since 2008.

His point was that it takes him out of the movie, which is fair if they’re only there as window dressing.

Yes, there are many musicians who can transition as very good actors (Cher, Lady Gaga, Jennifer Hudson) but most are average or terrible.

And I was responding to what he said here - I honestly hope there isn't going to be a trend of current pop singers trying to transition over to acting because it kinda seems like that's trying to be a thing - I was pointing out that something that has been going on for over a hundred years is not a new trend.

Yup I'm aware that singers have been crossing over to movies for a long time, but I meant more to refer to the current generation of pop singers that I've basically "grown up with" and get tons of exposure online and through the media. I honestly haven't seen very many movies with singers-turned-actors apart from the recent ones that I mentioned. The vast majority of movies I've seen are from the 80s and newer—so any singers or celebs otherwise in movies from back then were ones that I didn't really know from their non-movie career. People like Styles, Jonas, Sheeran, Swift, et al, are ones that I know way better and I've heard their music and seen their music videos on YouTube. So I've been finding it kinda weird to be seeing them in movies, particularly when the movie is meant to be serious & dramatic.

Nick Jonas is probably more of an actor than singer in recent years.

I just watched this last night. It wasn't the typical Emmerich schlock that I was expecting, and effects wise, the aerial combat scenes were actually quite decent.

My only major hangups was everyone looking too glossy and polished, and I'm not entirely sure what accent Ed Skrein was doing, but it wasn't good.

I think his "research" consisted of watching 1930s American Gangster movies and called it a day.

Reminded me of an accent used in a flashback scene in The Simpsons from many years ago. ''Youz guyz wanna play schtickbawl?''

An Emmerich movie without schlok. What the hell, this is betrayal of my trust :p

But seriously, glad to hear that the movie worked for you because I wasn't expecting any kind words lol. I guess I'll see this very soon.

For biggest effect you need to watch this film right after Dunkirk.
