Look, the movie is clearly going to be divisive among the fandom. A lot of the choices made are going to rub people the wrong way. Even though I love it, it still leaves me unsettled emotionally. And that is okay. Star Wars has a very strong emotional attachment to some people.

Tastes are different, that is fine.

However, you will be challenged when you try to claim that your view is the universal one, when there is clear evidence that those that dislike the movie are in the minority, and that the WOM of mouth isn't as bad as they would like to believe.

And there is plenty of valid criticisms about the movie and its characters. But I will challenge the use of the sexist term Mary Sue.

I never claimed that my disliking of the movie was the universal point of view. I even started multiple times that i am happy for those that like the movie and i even envy them for it.
But i will not accept being labled a stupid hater that does not get the movie or that i am just a troll when i feel genuine disappointment. When i fear for the first time in 28 years that future Star Wars might no longer be to my liking.

And who said those things about you?

What stereotypes? Rich people being overtly opulent?

Here is my problem with you saying that. You are using fluff, something considered to be inconsequential, to define something you don't like. Calling Canto Bight a detour, when it isn't. So you are incorrectly labeling Canto Bight as fluff. That isn't a battle of semantics. It is the crux of the argument. Because whether you like it or not is completely up to you.

What great feat did BB-8 do that an astromech can't? Everything he did is in the Star Wars canon.

Costumes and behavior. All just had a feel of the Lucas that made the prequels and "enhanced" the OT.

I've heard the word used in my sense many times. I'm sticking with it and as I said, a semantic debate doesn't interest me. You know what I mean anyway so it's your choice of trying to continue a debate I already said I'm not having.

Whether it's canon is irrelevant since I even went out of my way of saying that I don't think it fits an astromech droid. Him able to defeat human guards is a prime example of something I think just sucks. Just like R2 beating battle droids in the prequels.

Any chance of the RT Audience score increasing after most of the "0/5 before even seeing it" voters have now cleared?

Stereotypes of what? Being rich? That is what I am asking.

Why doesn't it fit astromechs? They have been doing it for years. Chopper, R2, BB-8, BT, etc. Badass astromechs are a thing. And not just in "bad" Star Wars. But a lot of the stuff considered the best material in the canon.

It will increase some but there are plenty of negative reviews coming in from people today who have seen the film. I think it probably ends up somewhere in the 60's on audience percentage.

Various rich and aristocrat types, yes.

Because an astromech droid, like all droids, are built for a purpose and their purpose, and obvious physical design, do not align well at all with fighting. Why did someone create an astromech droid with the ability to shoot big coins extremely hard when no one has made hyperspace weapons? Seems backwards.

I don't think neither the prequels nor Rebels are very good, although the prequels do have their moments. None include Super-R2 though.

That is not the same thing as the prequels at all. That was full of racist stereotypes.

Except astromechs are outfitted with defensive mechanisms. Why does an astromech know how to hack? Because it is useful. And in some cases, they can be... upgraded. Like any droid in Star Wars.

Again, its more then fine that you don't like it. But it is more then fitting of Star Wars astromechs and droids in general.

The prequels had both.

Using a little shock or a blowtorch is fine, that fits with the expected equipment. That they have computer access tools fit with having to deal with ship computers, which is a basic function for an astromech.

What's the high velocity coin shooter for? If you for some reason want to upgrade your astromech to fight, why not install a blaster then? BB-8 is clearly not built to fight, he just goes cartoon character a couple of times in TLJ.

Judging by the BO estimates, word of mouth seems to be solid.

I don't know if WOM explains the box office given that everyone and they're grandmother was gonna see the film regardless of the rotten tomatoes score or complaints about the film.

Its a cultural event on the opening weekend .The film is critic proof in that sense, so I don't see the connection between wom and box office in this case this week. The reviews certainly give it an extra boost but the vast majority of people are gonna see the film regardless.

You can clearly see evidence of WOM in the opening weekend. BvS and Wonder Woman are two great examples of the two spectrums.

But there are other examples where you cannot see it on opening weekend. Spidey 3 and Cap: Civil War are good examples. Showed up in the legs for both of them.

Would anyone really say Civil War had bad WOM though? It was just impenetrable to casual moviegoers in terms of continuity. Deathly Hallows Part 2 had similar legs.

Not bad WOM, just not good enough to get the repeat viewings necessary for great legs. Potter is notoriously frontloaded, regardless of quality. Last Jedi has the holiday period to help boost legs, but I think legs will be more similar to Rogue One (3.43 multiplier) than Force Awakens (3.78 multiplier).

That's fair. I think TLJ will fall squarely between RO and TFA for legs.

RotS has kind of settled as best in the PT trilogy, but not sure how many would say RotS was one of the best SW movies. I think that number is low. I see this film as being more divisive and be 50/50 in like a top 3 or 4 list, and bottom list. Rian Johnson took mamy risks in this film and almost deconstructed SW in many ways, but it still felt like SW and I loved what he did.

I don't know if this will end up being as lauded as ESB (as someone who liked TLJ, Empire is a tighter film in my opinion) but the way people are reacting to this film is very reminiscent of how some reacted to Empire when I go back and read old reviews.

That was a few years before my time LOL but I can definitely see the similarity. I think this movie will age well, and I know for myself personally this will age well for my own enjoyment. Really liked what Rian Johnson did with this one

Empire came out when I was 6. I don't remember any specific criticisms of it, but again....I was 6. At the time, I thought it was much scarier than the first movie, and I had refused to believe Vader was Luke's father until ROTJ came out. Didn't know any other kids who thought it was true back then, either.

People are mad that their TFA theories didn't come true in TLJ. I walked into the Empire Strikes Back in 1980 thinking Darth Vader was after Luke because he was still mad at him for blowing up the Death Star. Look how that turned out. :funny:

I was 14 when Empire came out. My friends and I had spent the years since Star Wars completely collecting all things Star Wars — action figures, playsets, toy blasters and lightsabers, bedsheets, blankets and pillowcases, lunchboxes, trading cards, you name it. We ran around the neighborhood playing Star Wars. And we were psyched beyond belief for Empire.

We HATED it. Hated, hated, hated it. We wanted more of Star Wars, with Our Heroes dong Hero Things and kicking the bad guys’ butts with all that awesome sfx going on. Instead we got the Rebellion being beaten! Han frozen! Luke fights Vader and LOSES!!! Worst of all: Vader was Luke’s father!?!?!? NONONONONONONONONO!!!! We absolutely refused to accept it. Vader was 100% lying and GEORGE LUCAS SUCKED!!!!

Obviously, opinions changed. But yeah, the last day or two have definitely been a blast from the past.

Empire was the only one of the original movies that I only saw once in the theater. I saw ROTJ twice, and I saw the first movie so many times that I remember my mom telling me as we were leaving the theater when I was about 5, "OK, now that was the last time. Next time we're seeing a different movie." :funny:

But we only saw Empire once. It scared the crap out of me then. I don't think I completely appreciated how brilliant that twist was until I watched it again when I was in high school.

I used to wonder if the adults suspected he was Luke's father all along. But we were watching it on TV years later, and during that scene, I overheard my mom saying to my dad, "God, remember what a bomb that was when we saw this?"

I vaguely remember people reacting to it in the theater, and I just remember being horrified.

I think that is a huge part of it. People saw the movie in their heads already, and when they got this, anger ensued. Won't apply for everyone, but I think a large part of people felt that way.

Like I said, I just love how this movie played with tropes and expectations, while still feeling like an extension of the Star Wars universe. This is much closer to what I wanted in Episode 7, but didn't get. I feel like Episode 9 probably will be more similar to Episodr 7, and thus safer and less divisive. My hopes of getting something new I felt was this one, and Rian Johnson KILLED IT for me. I wish he was doing Episode 9, lol

I’m not surprised it scared you at 6. Empire probably would have been PG-13 if the rating had existed then. My wife’s parentsdid something similar, took her to see The Towering Inferno when she was 8 and she had nightmares for weeks after.

I think there are big narrative issues in this movie that will prevent it from reaching ESB status.
