I don’t know why people continue to bring up the Spielberg thing about female leads. He’s under no obligation to make the type of movie you want him to do.

These ‘woke’ people, which is a stupid description in and of itself, aren’t actually interested in trying to create the very thing they want to see, they just want someone else to do it for them. The BFG came out in 2016, so it's not like he hasn't made the effort recently And The BFG bombed and got bad reviews. And it was written by a woman, the late Melissa Matheson.

Trying to attack a liberal and likely feminist filmmaker like Spielberg on this issue is sort of stupid.

The idea was simply if they wanted to make more of them, he would. If that is what he wanted to do, he has the pull to do it if he wanted. But he still mostly gravitates to male leads. Which is completely fine and nobody is holding him back from doing so.

Yep, what it is is laziness. This also the exact reason minorities don't have a general foothold in things like Hollywood. I know, because it is the exact same reasoning used there.

Then perhaps it's time to look at circumventing the system and developing something new. I myself dislike how Hollywood is run on creative grounds, but we're in a new media landscape with the internet and streaming services now and it presents new opportunities to change the game in how we consume entertainment. The next generation of celebrities and story tellers that kids are growing up with are coming from the online world, and we've got a bunch of streaming services now spending billions of dollars on content from literally all over the planet. And guess what? Anyone can do it. It's the democratisation of entertainment. That is the future.

I think ET was written by the same person. You really can't say Spielberg doesn't work with women. Screenwriters are important too.

Spielberg has made movies about Jewish and black people's struggles. Spielberg is Jewish and he has a black son so no doubt he probably identifies with some stories involving characters with that heritage.

Not every casting choice is about gender or racial identity. Spielberg worked with Tom hanks multiple times because he enjoys working with him. Spielberg has said he considers Daniel day Lewis, streep and mark rylance the best actors working today which is why he wanted to work with them.

Certain movies like war horse or Munich are male lead because the historical events the films were based on were male driven

You still need resources (money, influence, access to the right circles etc.) in order to launch anything on your own on a large scale, something that minority groups still don't have access to compared to their white/heterosexual counterparts.

A female-to-male transgender person like Dante Gill may have been identifies as a man and considers themselves a man.


But physically, they're still a woman, so I don't see how you can rule out an actress from playing someone who has the physical body of a woman even if they don't self-identify as one.

You’ve advocating for quotas in the boardroom which is only going to end up with films that end up pleasing nobody. I’m not saying working independently is easy, but it also gives you the greater control over what you want to release to people and with today’s tech you can carve out a pretty good living if done right. Does that mean you get to be a millionaire? Probably not, but you get to find an audience who is willing to support you and buy your product. You only have to see the number of people carving out a living on Twitch and YouTube to see how this can be done. Hollywood is slow to move because there’s billions of dollars each year being spent and they need to make a profit. The shear fact that name recognition, sequels and reboots are the driving force in decision making shows just how bankrupt the system is creatively for everyone. If they’re not willing to spend $150m on an original blockbuster that appeals to a wide audience, what the hell makes anyone think they’ll take more chances in other areas?
